Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1 KJV).

Beloved, yesterday, I wrote about laying aside that besetting sin that so easily beset us but our feature text doesn’t just talk about the sin which so easily beset us, it also advises us to lay aside every weight that slows us down from running the race set before us and this is one that affects a lot of us.

I like that the text says, ‘every weight’. The Amplified Bible Translation says… stripping off every unnecessary weight… The Message translation says… No extra spiritual fat… and I would like for you to think about all the junk that you consume that causes you to put on extra pounds and then try and relate that to your spiritual life.

Beloved, this is a call for us to get rid of those things in our lives that do not contribute to our purpose here on earth. This is a call for us to do a simple evaluation of everything we are involved with by asking ourselves this honest question; what contribution is this thing making to my life? ‘This thing’ includes your relationships, your conversations, your daily activities… everything…

I did this evaluation a while ago and I tell you… my TV went off, my contact list reduced to less than half, I reduced the number of places I went to and you would be surprised how much free time you have to do the things that are really important and are in line with the race that you are running.

Beloved, King David said… Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; Nor do I involve myself in great matters, Or in things too difficult for me (Psalm 131:1 AMP). The Message translation says… I haven’t meddled where I have no business…

The Apostle Paul also said… No soldier in active service gets entangled in the [ordinary business] affairs of civilian life; [he avoids them] so that he may please the one who enlisted him to serve (2 Timothy 2:4 AMP). In order words, stay out of people’s business and focus on what you’ve been called to do.

Like I said, I dropped a number of things and have been amazed at the number of important things I could do but even now, as I’m writing this, I’m away at a retreat somewhere in a little Spanish village because the Lord wanted me to spend some alone time assessing and re-evaluating where I am now; to drop every weight so I can hear His still small voice giving direction for what is set before me.

So, beloved, the question for you is, “do you need to get rid of any weight?”

‎Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth SO EASILY BESET US, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1 KJV).

Beloved, I remember listening to someone differentiate between a BESETTING SIN and an EVIL SIN. They said with a besetting sin, you love God but still struggle with sin in certain areas of your life but with an evil sin, you know what the Lord says not to do but you chose to disobey Him. So, in order words, a besetting sin is any temptation that you are weak in resisting that seems or tries to overtake you on a regular basis. That’s why our feature text says it so EASILY beset us.

Unfortunately, many of us have certain areas in our lives that the enemy seems to have control over. That area that so easily besets us and if we are sincere enough in acknowledging those areas, at least, we can then take the necessary steps to close the door to the enemy.

The Amplified Bible says… the sin which so EASILY AND CLEVERLY entangles us…

I read the word ‘EASILY’ which means ‘WITHOUT DIFFICULTY OR EFFORT’ and it just suggests to me that we don’t put up a fight when it comes to this particular sin but if we are to ‘lay aside those sins that so easily besets us’, then, we ought to first be honest in acknowledging them and then, we have to be wise enough to take the necessary measures to keep ourselves from falling… NO, you are not coming to my house or NO, I’m not going there or NO, I’m not listening to you or watching that. NO, gossiping or quarrelling is off the agenda today.

Beloved, while praying and believing for change, if you are to deal with that area in your life that so easily BESETS you, you have to go the extra mile to avoid getting close enough to your area of weakness. And remember, like the word of God says, you have to first… Submit yourselves therefore to God. RESIST THE DEVIL, and he will flee from you (James 4:7 KJV). The Amplified Bible says… So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you.

Beloved, the question is; how much SUBMITTING to the Lord and His authority (which includes the people in authority that the Lord has placed over you) are you subjecting yourself to? How much are you RESISTING THE DEVIL?

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; but his mother named him Jabez, saying, “Because I gave birth to him in pain.” (1 Chronicles 4:9 AMP).

Beloved, there are people born with a bright future, however because of what their parents went through, they alter the course of their lives. For instance, we see some mothers who have suffered in the hands of men training their daughters to be bitter towards men. As a result, instead of having a successful marriage, the daughter ruins it because of how her mind has been polluted. Same with some dads, they train their sons to be hard because of what they’ve experienced and the son ends up becoming heartless… They may look hard on the outside but inside, they are surrounded by pain and they seem helpless.

Our feature text introduces us to Jabez whose mother named him after the pain she had experienced and in Hebrew culture names were important. Your name revealed some characteristic about your birth, or a hope for your future and a person would normally manifest what they were called. The Amplified Bible Classic Edition says Jabez means ‘sorrow maker’. Can you imagine what they prophesied every time they called his name?

To be honorable means to be characterized by integrity and guided by a high sense of honor but despite his decisions to remain honorable, he was surrounded by painful situations. Who knows, maybe he was always experiencing broken relationships, disappointments at work or in business or ill health. Every letter that came through the post came with bad news.

However, one day he decided enough is enough. Jabez knew he was in the position to change things because He knew a God who could bring about a change in his life… He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!” AND GOD GRANTED HIM HIS REQUEST (1 Chronicles 4:10 NLT).

He prayed to God to bless him and his handiwork and for all round protection from pain. He said God, please do not depart from me because without you I am nothing and would continue in my misery.

Beloved, Jabez was labelled with sorrow and pain but his prayer reversed the label. Today, you probably don’t think you can do anything about your situation but you are in a better position because Jesus died to set you free from every baggage. He redeemed you from the curse (Galatians 3:13); By His wounds you have been healed (1 Peter 2:24); He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).

Jesus said…You may ask me for anything in His name and He will do it (John 14:14). Why not pray Jabez’s prayer and as you do so, it is my prayer that every parental baggage is broken off your life and you become free to be the honorable person that God has called you to be.

Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. SINCE THE FIRST DAY YOU BEGAN TO PRAY for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, YOUR REQUEST HAS BEEN HEARD IN HEAVEN. I have come in answer to your prayer. But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia (Daniel 10:12-13 NLT).

…SINCE THE FIRST DAY YOU BEGAN TO PRAY… YOUR REQUEST HAS BEEN HEARD IN HEAVEN…

Beloved, can you imagine what would have happened if Daniel gave up on his prayers? Many times we pray believing the Lord for something but because of impatience we soon give up. I remember someone sharing with me that as prayers were being made about a particular product reaching the four corners of this world, the Lord opened their eyes to see the product flying around in the air.

Now, I’ve always believed in the power of prayers but that was the day I started to look at the act of prayer differently because it confirmed that immediately you pray, things start to happen in the spiritual realm. The angel of the Lord that appeared to Daniel in our feature text also confirms this. He said… Since the first day you began to pray… your request has been heard in heaven. Not just that, he was immediately sent with Daniel’s answer but was delayed. Thank God Daniel kept on praying for three whole weeks (Daniel 10:2-3).

Beloved, there may be various reasons why there’s a delay between the time your prayer was made and when you finally receive the answer but one thing I know is that as far as that prayer is made with the right motives (James 4:3), it doesn’t matter what you see now, just don’t stop praying for it.

Prophet Elijah was one that refused to take no for an answer from his servant… Seven times Elijah told him to go and look. Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.”… (1 Kings 18:43-44 NLT)

Now, imagine if he had stopped at the sixth attempt? This was something Jesus taught His disciples using the parable of the persistent widow who gave the wicked judge no rest until he granted her request… [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not to turn coward (faint, lose heart, and give up) (Luke 18:1 AMP). Jesus ended that parable by saying the wicked judge… rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to His chosen people who cry out to Him day and night? Will He keep putting them off? (Luke 18:7 NLT)

Beloved, today, I leave you with this simple message… Never stop praying (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT).

26. June 2017 · Comments Off on WHEN THE LORD MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE A FOOL · Categories: God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Promise

You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus… Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you… (Luke 1:31-35 NLT).

Beloved, has the Lord ever put you in a position where He makes you sound or look like a fool? Well, I don’t think it can be as bad as Mary’s situation. Please put yourself in Mary’s position and first imagine how this sounds to you and then imagine how you are to communicate it to others. It’s one thing if something like this had happened before but it’s another thing if it’s never been heard of before. I was sharing this week someone last week and even the thought got two of us laughing. Yeah right!

Have you ever received a word from the Lord that you can’t even or don’t want to tell people because the more you recount what you heard, you begin to sound like a fool even to yourself? This is when you feel it’s better not to explain yourself so you start running away from people or if you have to speak to them at all, you pray that they don’t start asking you questions that you don’t have answers to. Probably the reason why Mary went to hideout at Elizabeth’s house. The Bible says she hurried to go and find Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-40). She must have said at least we both share unusual stories.

Can you really imagine how Mary must have felt? This is the kind of news that the Lord ‎may have to confirm with someone else, if not, you’re just going to sound like a complete fool. We are told that… Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph…,” the angel said, “…THE CHILD WITHIN HER WAS CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.”‎ (Matthew 1:18-20 NLT)

The Lord knew what was really going on in Joseph’s mind so had to confirm Mary’s story before her life was to be torn apart by this inconceivable news. ‎

Beloved, you’re not ready to be used mightily by God if you’re not prepared to look like a fool for Him. However, if you have any idea how He works, then you should know that… God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise… (1 Corinthians 1:27 NLT)‎.

Yes, you may look like you are indeed foolish for a while but with the kind of word the Lord has given you, it would take its fulfilment for people to understand what God is up to so please hold on to your word and just hang in there.

…Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.” ABRAHAM REASONED THAT IF ISAAC DIED, GOD WAS ABLE TO BRING HIM BACK TO LIFE AGAIN. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead (Hebrews 11:17-19 NLT).

ABRAHAM REASONED…

Beloved, there are things that we need to consider about God that would make it easier to obey whatever He has asked us to do. I can only just imagine what would have gone through Abraham’s mind as he journeyed to Moriah; “but I’m sure I heard God correctly… He definitely told me that Isaac is the son through whom my descendants will be counted but why is He asking me to sacrifice him? No, Isaac can’t die. Well, what if he dies? Isn’t it the same God that gave him to us when my own body and my wives womb was already dead (Romans 4:19)… Well, maybe if he dies… No… I’m confident that even if Isaac dies, God is able to raise him from the dead…There’s no need to worry. We’ll be right back.”

“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, AND THEN WE WILL COME RIGHT BACK.” (Genesis 22:5 NLT)

Beloved, I’m sure Isaac also had some considering to do. He must have thought to himself, “there’s something odd about this scene”… Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together, Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father… WE HAVE THE FIRE AND THE WOOD… BUT WHERE IS THE SHEEP FOR THE BURNT OFFERING?” “GOD WILL PROVIDE a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. AND THEY BOTH WALKED ON TOGETHER (Genesis 22:6-8 NLT).

GOD WILL PROVIDE… AND THEY BOTH WALKED ON TOGETHER… and I’m thinking that they must have chatted more on the way… “You see my son, let me tell you about the God we are going to worship. Once upon a time your mother and I were unable to have a child. We waited on the Lord for about 25 years and just when we thought there was no humanly reason for us to ever have a child, the Lord asked us this question… Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (Genesis 18:14 NLT) …and you see, that son happens to be you. This is the same GOD that WILL PROVIDE a sheep for the burnt offering, my son… AND THEY BOTH WALKED ON TOGETHER… No more questions from either of them…

Beloved, do you have some considering to do? IS God ABLE? CAN HE PROVIDE? HAS HE PROVIDED IN THE PAST? HAS HE MADE A PROMISE? CAN GOD LIE?

The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord is on His heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; His eyes examine them (Psalms 11:4 NIV).

Beloved, our feature text tells us that the Lord observes everyone on earth; His eyes examine them and so one of the prayers I learnt to pray is; Lord, from the realm of what You know and see, deal with this situation. I found that this is a powerful prayer because no matter how anointed and wise you think you are, your knowledge is limited. We may not always know what is really going on around us and most times, we deal with situations based on the way they are presented to us. As a result, we tend to pray amiss.

Let’s look at the case of Jacob; If only Jacob knew that his son Joseph was not actually dead, he won’t have lived the most part of his life in misery mourning for his son. But he went by the facts that were presented to him and jumped into the wrong conclusion.

We are always too quick to react based on what we see or hear. We come in contact and communicate with people on a daily basis. They smile at us. They say things but we don’t know what is really true and what is false, except you are very discerning. We even assess people based on what we see. However, there is a lot of deception going on. But even putting deception to own side, the Lord knows the outcome of every situation and things that may appear brilliant now based on our own understanding, may turn out to be very dangerous later so we need to be careful. That lady or guy that looks like a wife or husband material today may turn out to be a real wolf in sheep’s clothing. Not to talk of who you thought was your best friend. That’s opportunity presented to you may appear brilliant right now but may become a thorn in your flesh later on.

Beloved, you are asked to… Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and He will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV).

There’s nothing like when you hand over your whole life to the Lord and say; Lord, from the realm of what You know, please deal with every issue concerning my life. As far as you are patient enough to His voice and obedient enough to follow His leading, you can’t do wrong… If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; (Psalm 91:9-11 NIV).

Beloved, remember… Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and He will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV).

… And who knows whether you have attained royalty for such a time as this [and for this very purpose]?” (Esther 4:14 AMPC)

Beloved, when you do a careful study of the book of Esther, you would find that Mordecai and Queen Esther had some unfinished business to resolve in their family lineage.

Reading the Expanded Bible version which isn’t a very popular version helps to give some insight. Firstly, Haman who passionately hated Mordecai was an Amalekite. We are told that… King Xerxes [Ahasuerus] honored [promoted; made great] Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite [A DESCENDANT OF KING AGAG OF THE AMALEKITES, THE HATED ENEMIES OF ISRAEL (WHICH SAUL FAILED TO ERADICATE)… (Esther 3:1 EXB).

WHICH SAUL FAILED TO ERADICATE…

Beloved, the Amalekites were long-time enemies of the Lord and His people. Moses told the Israelites… Remember what the Amalekites did to you when you came out of Egypt. When you were tired and worn out, they met you on the road and attacked [picked off] all those lagging… They were not afraid of God. When the Lord your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land He is giving you… as your own…, you shall destroy [blot/wipe out] any memory of the Amalekites… Do not forget [SAUL FORGOT, but the Amalekites (called Agagites) come to an end in the book of Esther (Esth. 3:1)]! (Deuteronomy 25:17-19 EXB)

It so happened that Mordecai (and Queen Esther) were descendants of Saul‎. This translation says… Now there was a Jew in the palace of Susa whose name was Mordecai son of Jair. Jair was the son of Shimei, the son of Kish [THESE ARE RELATIVES OF SAUL, SHOWING THAT MORDECAI WAS HIS DESCENDANT]. Mordecai was from the tribe of Benjamin (Esther 2:5 EXB). The Lord had asked Saul to put an end to the Amalekites. Samuel told Saul… This is what the Lord… has declared: I have decided to settle accounts with the nation of Amalek for opposing Israel when they came from Egypt. Now go and completely destroy the entire Amalekite nation….” (1 Samuel 15:2-3 NLT) but… Saul and his men spared Agag’s life (1 Samuel 15:9 NLT). As a result, the Amalekites appeared again to burn David’s home town, Ziklag to the ground and carry off their women and children and though David managed to kill many of them, some escaped (1 Samuel 30:17).

However, Esther’s time came and with the help of Mordecai, she put an end to that family devil.

Beloved, I said all this to say that there are some people that the Lord has raised to end long time family battles; that demon that has been attacking your family from generation to generation. I believe that this is the season where the Lord is truly raising generals that would finish the work He’s been trying to accomplish in families. Could you be one of them? If so, why not ask the Lord to position and equip you to put to an end to what your predecessors failed to destroy?

For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have demonstrated for His name, in having served and continuing to serve the saints… (Hebrews 6:10-11 NET)

Beloved, we know the story of Mordecai. We are told that he was… held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews (Esther 10:3 NIV).

This verse summarises the conclusion of Mordecai’s story but after reading his experience, I cannot help but wonder what must have gone through his mind as he looked back and reflected over his journey. what would he consider his highlights and lowlights? What moments would he look back on and say… Lord I thank You for this or that. Perhaps he would say I’m glad that I took Esther in and looked after her like my own when her parents died. If you were in Mordecai’s shoes, what would you especially thank God for?

While you’re thinking about it, I would tell you mine. If I were Mordecia, reflecting back on my experience, I would lie down flat on the floor and say… Lord I thank You for not allowing King Xerxes reward me the time I uncovered a conspiracy to assassinate him (Esther 2:21-23). I thank you for the delay because though my recognition didn’t come when I expected it, it came when I most needed it. Years had gone by and it felt like I was forgotten but just at the right time when my enemies where plotting to kill me, you resurrected my file and it saved my life.

His enemies said…“Have a pole set up, reaching to a height of fifty cubits, and ask the king in the morning to have Mordecai impaled on it. Then go with the king to the banquet and enjoy yourself.” This suggestion delighted Haman, and he had the pole set up (Esther 5:14 NIV) … but… that night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes. “What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?” the king asked. “Nothing has been done for him,” his attendants answered (Esther 6.1-3 NIV).

Really? Do you really mean nothing has been done for him? Okay, I’ll tell you what I would do. Let’s make this fun. Bring me Mordecai’s plotters. Let them decide his reward. So instead of the death sentence that Haman had plotted that day… he robed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!” (Esther 6:11 NIV)

Brilliant!

Beloved, many times we get frustrated over God’s delays. We think we’ve been forgotten but the word today is… Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV).

At about this time, the Ammonites began their war against Israel. When the Ammonites attacked, the elders of Gilead sent for Jephthah in the land of Tob. The elders said, “Come and be our commander! Help us fight the Ammonites!” But Jephthah said to them, “Aren’t you the ones who hated me and drove me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now when you’re in trouble?” “Because we need you,” the elders replied. “If you lead us in battle against the Ammonites, we will make you ruler over all the people of Gilead.” (Judges 11:4-8 NLT).

Beloved, do you know that the same people that reject you are the same people that may come looking for you when it’s the Lord’s appointed time? The Bible is full of stories where people were rejected by men but appointed by the Lord. There’s the story of Joseph and then Jephthah.

So, what’s Jephthah’s story… Now Jephthah of Gilead was a great warrior. He was the son of Gilead, BUT his mother was a prostitute. Gilead’s wife also had several sons, and when these half brothers grew up, they chased Jephthah off the land. “You will not get any of our father’s inheritance,” they said, “for you are the son of a prostitute.” (Judges 11:1-2 NLT).

… Gilead was a great warrior…BUT his mother was a prostitute ‎…

Beloved, there’s always a BUT in many of our stories which means the story doesn’t end there and like it is often said… don’t allow your background put your back to the ground. It doesn’t matter how you came into this world. The fact that you made it means that God has a purpose for you. The Lord told the prophet Jeremiah…‎ “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5 NLT).

… I set you apart…

This usually translates to mean being rejected by people because you don’t fit into the norm. ‎ People would label you because you don’t fit what they call normal but it doesn’t matter who rejects you. As far as you were a born leader, you will thrive anywhere and at times the isolation is your training ground and it proves you can be faithful with the little. Like the Bible says… Do not despise these small beginnings…(Zechariah ‪4:10‬ NLT) and like Jesus also said… ‎ If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities (Luke ‪16:10‬ NLT).‬‬

Beloved, even Jesus was rejected… He came to His own people, and even they rejected Him (John1:11 NLT) and it took Him dying on the cross to be recognised as the Son of God (Matthew 27:54)‎

‎Beloved are you feeling rejected at the moment? It took the same people that rejected Jephthah to go in search of him when his skill was desperately needed. Perhaps ‎if he was accepted right from the beginning, he wouldn’t be available for this appointment.

SELAH!
