Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him (John 4:20-23 NKJV).

Beloved, a few weeks ago, I went on a retreat with a few ladies and one of the sessions on our programme was ‘Worship in Spirit and in Truth’. Well, we all had our notes to teach on the topic but because ‘meeting by the well’ is very much a practical ministry, the Lord sure had something else in mind and by the time we were done, I had practical notes to go with my theory.

So, let the worship session begin…

Beloved, we ended up having a major argument which went along the lines of… ‘the way you Africans sing your songs versus the way we Jamaicans sing our songs’. The interesting thing is that it was the same worship song but sung in a slightly different way and one admitted that she struggled with the way you Africans sing your version and at some point, was contemplating just looking for a Jamaican ministry to join. The funny thing is that ‎she found it strange when ‘we Africans’ said we also struggled with your version (LOL). Why would you find it strange? What gives your version authority over mine? It was an interesting conversation which just shed some light on the conflict that the Samaritan woman found herself in.

Which one is it? “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Beloved, in the end, we all admitted we couldn’t feel the presence of God but once we were able to push past that, we were fine. ‎So, is culture a barrier to worshipping in spirit and in truth or were we just in the flesh?

When I did my Masters in Applied Theology, we did a study on Christ and culture: Five views by H. Richard Niebuhr.

1. Christ against culture
2. Christ of culture
3. Christ above culture
4. Christ and culture in paradox
5. Christ the transformer of culture

Beloved, which one do you think it is? Today being Sunday, as you worship the Lord, why not ask yourself this question; am I a true worshipper? Because the Lord is seeking such

God bless you in Jesus Christ name
