When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion. But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of her son, Isaac. So she turned to Abraham and demanded, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!” This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son. But God told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted (Genesis 21:8-12 NLT).

What is God up to?

Beloved, I am one of those people that has been trained by the Lord to always look for His hand in every situation no matter how bad it is because that way you can never miss out on what God is up to. Now, in our feature text, we read about Sarah telling Abraham to…get rid of that slave woman and her son. However, Abraham isn’t happy about it. He was upset but then God stepped in and… told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you.

Beloved, to Abraham it may have looked like it was the devil coming to scatter his home but to God, it was something different. Listen to your wife! The Amplified Bible translation says… whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her and do what she asks.

I beg your pardon. That must be the devil speaking Abraham must have thought but not according to our key scripture. It was God and how you know it is God is that God also had plans for Hagar’s son. He told Abraham… I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar’s son because he is your son, too.” (Genesis 21:13 NLT)

Beloved, the Lord also had plans for the boy and when he was in need… God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants.” Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water. She quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink (Genesis 21:17-19 NLT).

Beloved, there are some situations we find ourselves in that we may think it’s the devil bringing about this commotion but like someone once said; the devil is God’s devil. God can use him to bring about His will so even when it doesn’t make sense, you must understand that… God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them (Romans 8:28 NLT).

Listen… Hear what the Lord is saying…

God bless you in Jesus Christ name
