Then Moses turned again to the Lord and said, O Lord, why have You dealt evil to this people? Why did You ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people, NEITHER HAVE YOU DELIVERED YOUR PEOPLE AT ALL (Exodus 5:22-23 AMPC).

Beloved, as we were embarking on one of the assignments from the Lord this year, one of the things the Holy Spirit led us to pray against was the backlash of the enemy which is a strong negative reaction whenever the Lord wants to bring about a massive deliverance. As you read through the Bible, you find out that the devil only has one mission; to steal, kill and destroy… nothing more and right from the very beginning, he appeared in the garden of Eden to steal, kill and destroy the wonderful work-free, burden-free future God gave to Adam and Eve… and he continued with the Israelites and he still continues till date.

We read that God sent Moses to Pharaoh… tell him to free My people from bondage… Let My people go so that they are free to worship Me… but Pharaoh instructed the slave drivers to increase their burden… let HEAVIER WORK be laid upon the men that they may labor at it and pay no attention to LYING WORDS (Exodus 5:9 AMPC).

The New Living translation says…. Load them down with more work. Make them sweat! That will teach them to LISTEN TO LIES!”… And the Message translation says – CRACK DOWN ON THEM. That’ll cure them of their whining, their god-fantasies.”

Beloved, that’s the plan of the enemy… to load you with heavier work… to make you sweat… crack down on you so that the promise you received from God would seem like LYING WORDS… god-fantasies… you get so burdened from everything he puts on you that like Moses in our feature text, you start to wonder… but God… are you sure you meant what you said?

This is the same Moses that God appeared to by the burning bush and showed many wonderful signs…The Lord even told him what to expect. He said… I would harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he won’t let them go (Exodus 4:21) but when it came down to it, Moses got discouraged.

It’s the same thing today. The stories in the Bible have been written for us so that we know exactly what to expect… but when it comes down to it, many start to lose their believe in the promises of God.

However, the Bible says… For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not! Indeed, LET GOD BE TRUE BUT EVERY MAN A LIAR (Romans 3:3-4 NKJV).

Beloved, before we could finish saying happy new year, January is over and many are saying “but God you said”. However, when God said, it isn’t the time to just sit down there waiting. Heavy warfare should be taking place because hell is mad but know that like He did with the Israelites, God would prove Himself true in our situation and everyman a liar.

Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Pharaoh will demand, ‘Show me a miracle.’ When he does this, say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down in front of Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.’” So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did what the Lord had commanded them. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent! Then Pharaoh called in his own wise men and sorcerers, and these Egyptian magicians did the same thing with their magic. They threw down their staffs, which also became serpents! But then Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs (Exodus 7:8-12 NLT)

Beloved, I can only just imagine how Moses and Aaron must have felt to see that Pharaoh’s magicians were able to produce a similar sign to what they had produced. It must have been a surprise to them because while the Lord told them many things that would happen for example Pharaoh’s heart would be hardened, I can’t remember ‎reading where He told them that he would try and produce the same signs as yours.

So, first of all why didn’t the Lord tell Moses that they would also imitate him? ‎Didn’t God know this beforehand? What do you do when you believe God has giving you a cutting-edge breakthrough idea and before you know it, something similar starts springing up everywhere?

Well, you don’t have to do anything and you don’t have to feel intimidated. Firstly, it doesn’t matter how much they produce. What matters is the source and I think we have lost sight of that. There seems to be a lot of counterfeit everywhere and we get carried away. No one is asking what’s the source of this? ‎ Where are all these springing from?

Beloved, you don’t have to be intimidated and you don’t have to be discourage. Have confidence in the unique thing that the Lord has placed in your hand. If you are patient long enough, the superior quality would stand the test of time and swallow up every inferior quality you see walking around‎.

Don’t be carried away by all that you see around you. Be confident that what you have or are producing is quality and authentic and would stand the test of time.

Beloved, the Lord says… Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’” Then another message came to me from the Lord: “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”… (Zechariah 4:7-10 NLT)

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him (John 4:20-23 NKJV).

Beloved, a few weeks ago, I went on a retreat with a few ladies and one of the sessions on our programme was ‘Worship in Spirit and in Truth’. Well, we all had our notes to teach on the topic but because ‘meeting by the well’ is very much a practical ministry, the Lord sure had something else in mind and by the time we were done, I had practical notes to go with my theory.

So, let the worship session begin…

Beloved, we ended up having a major argument which went along the lines of… ‘the way you Africans sing your songs versus the way we Jamaicans sing our songs’. The interesting thing is that it was the same worship song but sung in a slightly different way and one admitted that she struggled with the way you Africans sing your version and at some point, was contemplating just looking for a Jamaican ministry to join. The funny thing is that ‎she found it strange when ‘we Africans’ said we also struggled with your version (LOL). Why would you find it strange? What gives your version authority over mine? It was an interesting conversation which just shed some light on the conflict that the Samaritan woman found herself in.

Which one is it? “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Beloved, in the end, we all admitted we couldn’t feel the presence of God but once we were able to push past that, we were fine. ‎So, is culture a barrier to worshipping in spirit and in truth or were we just in the flesh?

When I did my Masters in Applied Theology, we did a study on Christ and culture: Five views by H. Richard Niebuhr.

1. Christ against culture
2. Christ of culture
3. Christ above culture
4. Christ and culture in paradox
5. Christ the transformer of culture

Beloved, which one do you think it is? Today being Sunday, as you worship the Lord, why not ask yourself this question; am I a true worshipper? Because the Lord is seeking such

“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit (Jeremiah 17:7‭-‬8 NLT).

Beloved, there’s the opposite of our feature text which says… “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land (Jeremiah 17:5‭-‬6 NLT)

Another Scripture says… Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life (Proverbs 13:12 NKJV). So, perhaps the reason why you are getting your heart is getting sick or frustrated is because you are still placing your hope in man, waiting for man to open doors or to finance the project and the Lord is waiting for you to exhaust all your sources of hope and when you have nowhere else to go then, perhaps you would finally turn to Him and say I have nowhere else to go.

Our feature text says you will not be… bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. The NKJV says and will not be anxious in the year of drought… This is because your trust is in the Lord and you know that… “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (Numbers 23:19 NKJV)

The Lord is saying that for what I am about to do in your life, it would only take me. Yes, I might use men but you cannot put your trust in man because as you can already see, they are unstable and would let you down but when you put your trust in the Lord, you would have no reason to worry or be afraid of disappointment.

“These are the words of the Holy One, the True One, He who has the key [to the house] of David, He who opens and no one will [be able to] shut, and He who shuts and no one opens: ‘I know your deeds. See, I have set before you an open door which no one is able to shut, for you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not renounced or denied My name (REVELATION 3:7‭-‬8 AMP).

However, you must trust me and… be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV).

A man’s pride and sense of self-importance will bring him down, but he who has a humble spirit will obtain honor (Proverbs 29:23 AMP).

Beloved, I’ve been reading about Joseph who was popularly known as daddy’s favourite. He got a special coat for it. That’s enough to get you into a lot of trouble with your siblings but then you have the nerves to tell daddy the wrong things we are doing (Genesis 37:2).

We are told that… His brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him (Genesis 37: 4 NLT). This tells me that there must have been constant quarrelling and fighting amongst them; “Get out of here you this daddy’s boy. Let’s make sure nobody talks or plays with Joseph today” and Joseph would say “Daddy, do you know what Reuben and Judah did today?”

So, can you imagine how Joseph must have felt when he dreamt. He probably couldn’t wait to wake up from his sleep. Can you imagine how he must have expressed the dream? …“Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.” And his brothers said to him, “SHALL YOU INDEED REIGN OVER US? Or SHALL YOU INDEED HAVE DOMINION OVER US?” SO THEY HATED HIM EVEN MORE FOR HIS DREAMS AND FOR HIS WORDS (Genesis 37:6-8 NKJV).

You know Joseph could also interpret so he must have interpreted the dream and who knows how he did it because the message translation says – they hated him more than ever because of his dreams and THE WAY HE TALKED.

But it didn’t stop there. Let me rub it in some more… Then HE DREAMED STILL ANOTHER DREAM AND TOLD IT TO HIS BROTHERS, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” So he told it to his father and his brothers; AND HIS FATHER REBUKED HIM and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? SHALL YOUR MOTHER AND I AND YOUR BROTHERS INDEED COME TO BOW DOWN TO THE EARTH BEFORE YOU?” (Genesis 37:9-10 NKJV)

Beloved, this time his father rebuked him. But why? Could it be how he said it?

What am I trying to say here? God gives gifts to accomplish His purpose but we sometimes make it about ourselves. Perhaps, Joseph had a boastful attitude that fuelled his brother’s jealousy. However, he soon learnt the hard way. They sold him into slavery and after several years of severe hardship, he was humbled. He learnt an important lesson; our gifts and talents come from God and it’s for His purpose and not for us to gain grounds or settle scores with people. He later gave God the credit when he was brought before Pharaoh… “It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.” (Genesis 41:16 NLT)

Beloved, IS IT ALL ABOUT YOU or do you acknowledge that it’s beyond your power?

‎Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” (Matthew 16:17-19 NLT)

Beloved, when you read our feature text, there’s the tendency to stop and say “cool let the forbidding begin. I forbid this and I forbid that” and I’m sure this was exactly how Peter felt. However after making this statement, Jesus began to talk about His death.

We are told that… from then on Jesus began to tell His disciples plainly that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem, and that He would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day He would be raised from the dead. But Peter took Him aside and began to reprimand Him for saying such things. “HEAVEN FORBID, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” (Matthew 16:21-23 NLT)

Beloved, with his new-found authority to forbid things on earth, Peter began to forbid that Jesus would die but Jesus told him off because he wasn’t walking in God’s revelation. He was seeing things from a human point of view, not from God’s. However, it has to be God’s and in this case, God’s point of view included Jesus suffering and if you start forbidding it, you are actually working for the devil. Hence the reason Jesus said get away satan.

Beloved, challenges can actually be part of God’s plan. When l lost my house, I lost a lot of people because they thought I was crazy to let it go. Amongst other people, my brother came with £5000 and said take this money, go and stop the repossession but with tears in my eyes, I had to turn him down because the Lord said “let it go” and now, I’m glad I obeyed Him and not said HEAVEN FORBID…

Beloved, Jesus went‎ on to say to His disciples… “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it (Matthew 16:24-25 NLT). He also said… And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life (Matthew 19:29 NLT).

Beloved, what are you forbidding? Is it God’s will?

25. January 2017 · Comments Off on ARE YOU GUARDING YOUR HEART? · Categories: Change, Choices, God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Mind, Thoughts

Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and ABOVE ALL THAT YOU GUARD, for out of it flow THE SPRINGS OF LIFE (Proverbs 4:23 AMPC).

Beloved, we are known to guard things precious to us…our possessions etc. but the Bible advises that ABOVE ALL THAT YOU GUARD, you must put a fence around your heart, keeping a watch on what goes in and out. Just as a source of water can go bad when polluted, one’s life can become corrupted if the heart isn’t guarded and we know that physically, an unhealthy heart makes for a poor quality of life.

Our heart is the centre of our emotions, feelings, thinking, reasoning and desires. It’s a place where life-changing decisions are made. Some people harden their heart because they’ve been hurt in the past and hence have stored up all the hurt, bitterness, unforgiveness… and trust me, you don’t want to be around such people because all that comes from that heart is hurt, bitterness, unforgiveness and they end up living a bitter life because that’s what they end up attracting.

Be careful what you store up in your heart. Jesus said… A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart… (Luke 6:45).

Now, here are some practical steps to take to guard my heart…

1) You’ve got to keep a check on your thoughts. Personally, I know what to think to immediately bring me to tears and make me so miserable for the rest of the day but I always have to immediately shake my head and say not today. You can’t imagine how many times I’ve had to say… SATAN GET LOST when he’s trying to fill my mind with all sorts of negative thoughts. Some people don’t think you can control your thoughts but you can.

2) You have to be good at making excuses for people so that people’s action doesn’t affect your emotions. You have to take time to study and understand where people are coming from. Our values, culture, background and experience all contribute to how we think and act. This helps in understanding why people are the way they are so why would you allow somebody’s experience shape yours?

3) Be careful about what you read. Beloved, I’m so quick to delete an email or text message immediately I sense that there’s something in it that would hit me the wrong way. This also means hiding some of my friends Facebook updates from my timeline immediately I sense anything that could arouse any negative thoughts or feelings.

Well, I’m just guarding my heart.

Beloved, what are some of the practical steps you can take to guard your heart? The Message Translation says… that’s where life starts… NLT says… for it determines the course of your life… KJV says… for out of it are the issues of life. Why not ask God to show you and as you do so I pray that you receive the grace to take the steps needed for a healthy spiritual heart. Meditate on Philippians 4:8

A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men (Proverbs 18:16 NKJV).

Beloved, only last week, I was telling my brother how after leaving university with excellent results, I started looking for a job. After a while, I started getting frustrated but then, I was invited to this interview with a pretty good pay and so I went on my knees and asked God for wisdom. The kind of prayer that says “Lord I’ve exhausted all my efforts and really need your help”.

I studied Business IT so, on the day of the interview I was led to take my dissertation project and at the interview, I walked them through an online system I built and after a few days, they called me back to say that they have already filled the position that they advertised and I’m thinking so why are you calling me. However, they then went on to say that the system I showed them made them think of a project that the government wanted to implement and they wanted to offer me a 3 months’ contract. Well, 3 months turned into 12 years.

Beloved, I’m thinking of when Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream. He not only interpreted the dream, he had a well thought of solution.

He said… Pharaoh should find an intelligent and wise man and put him in charge of the entire land of Egypt. Then Pharaoh should appoint supervisors over the land and let them collect one-fifth of all the crops during the seven good years. Have them gather all the food produced in the good years that are just ahead and bring it to Pharaoh’s storehouses. Store it away, and guard it so there will be food in the cities…” Joseph’s suggestions were well received… So Pharaoh asked his officials, “Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God?” (Genesis 41:33-38 NLT)

Beloved, Joseph created a whole department for himself, helped define his job description and that of his team and… Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or wise as you are. You will be in charge of my court, and all my people will take orders from you…” (Genesis 41:39-40 NLT)

Recently, someone said that the church is so carried away by praying for money that we don’t pray for wealth and immediately I thought of Solomon who didn’t need to pray for money. He prayed for wisdom which got him wealth. I went on to tell my brother that our prayers need to be strategic. ‎If you want to be a president. Spell it out to God who plants desires in our hearts. Do your research about what’s needed for the position, work out a specific Scripture based prayer plan, table it before God, pray and act in faith.

Beloved, our feature text says the gift God has given you will make room for you. Do you know you can create a position for yourself? People should be able to see what value you can add to them. It should be a case of them saying “I didn’t even think of that”

Joseph is still alive!” they told him. “And he is governor of all the land of Egypt!” Jacob was stunned at the news—he couldn’t believe it. But when they repeated to Jacob everything Joseph had told them, and when he saw the wagons Joseph had sent to carry him, their father’s spirits revived. Then Jacob exclaimed, “It must be true! My son Joseph is alive! I must go and see him before I die.”‎ (Genesis 45:26-28 NLT)

Beloved, you know this story so well. You know how Jacob felt about releasing his son, Benjamin to go down to Egypt in the first place.‎ Jacob cried out… “You are robbing me of my children! Joseph is gone! Simeon is gone! And now you want to take Benjamin, too. Everything is going against me!”… “My son will not go down with you. His brother Joseph is dead, and he is all I have left. If anything should happen to him on your journey, you would send this grieving, white-haired man to his grave.”‎ (Genesis 42:36-38 NLT)

It took a lot of convincing to let Benjamin go and I can only just imagine the kind of things that were going through his mind. You know the devil is an expert at painting all kind of scenarios in your mind. “First time it was Joseph, then Simeon,‎ and then Benjamin. What if a wild animal devours all of them this time?

However, while he was thinking of all sort, this was the news that was getting ready to come to him…. “Now hurry back to my father and tell him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me master over all the land of Egypt. So come down to me immediately!… I will take care of you there… Look! You can see for yourselves… that I really am Joseph! Go tell my father of my honored position here in Egypt. Describe for him everything you have seen, and then bring my father here quickly.” (Genesis 45:9-13 NLT)

Beloved, and then when they delivered the good news, they had to pinch Jacob to believe it. Isn’t it funny how we find it easier to believe the lie that the enemy wants us to believe than the truth. With blood on Joseph’s coat of many colours, it wasn’t even confirmed. Jacob assumed and bought into his own conclusion but here’s the truth and he struggled to believe. Hmmm… interesting

Beloved, are you expecting news? Don’t expect the worst. Don’t let the enemy cause you to meditate on the wrong things. Rather, throughout this week… whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things (Philippians 4.8 NKJV) and as you do so, I pray you receive the best kind of news you were not even expecting.

22. January 2017 · Comments Off on STILL A PASTOR IN PRISON · Categories: Contentment, God's Plan, Humility, Jesus Christ, Patience, Relationship, Vision

While they were in prison, Pharaoh’s cup-bearer and baker each had a dream one night, and each dream had its own meaning. When Joseph saw them the next morning, HE NOTICED THAT THEY BOTH LOOKED UPSET. “WHY DO YOU LOOK SO WORRIED TODAY?” he asked them (Genesis 40: 5-7 NLT)

Beloved, in a world where everyone wants a platform, many do not consider themselves as anything until given a platform and a microphone but our feature text introduces us to a man‎ who was functioning in his calling regardless of where he was. A pastor is one who cares for the needs of his sheep and this was what Joseph did… WHY DO YOU LOOK SO WORRIED TODAY, he asked.

In this story, we are told that… the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him His faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed (Genesis 39:21-23 NLT)‎.

Beloved, before now, with the Lord’s hand on him, Joseph was serving successfully in Potiphar’s house (Genesis 39:2) until he was set up and found himself in prison but Joseph knew that Prison or Potiphar’s house, I am still who I am.‎

I remember reading a story of a pastor of a church who also owned a school where he taught‎. However, the thing was that his church congregation was quite small in comparison to the people that attended his school. So, someone then asked him how it feel to be successful at one and not at the other. “What do you mean?”, he asked. “Who told you I am not successful as a pastor? “The Lord called me to be a pastor of a church. He never once told me to how many people”. Beloved, that was his reply.

Beloved, Jesus said… “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own? (Luke 16:10-12 NLT). Joseph was successful wherever he was and when the Lord saw he was faithful with the few, He then promoted him.

Beloved, Apostle Paul told Timothy… Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching (2 Timothy 4:2 NLT). ‎What this means is that regardless of the situation, go to work. Wherever you perceive a need, you must try to meet that need. You don’t necessarily need a big platform. At any point in time, people in your sphere of influence are your congregation… Your family… your friends… your neighbours… your students… your work colleagues… etc.

This principle can be applied to whatever you do so go to work.
