The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” “Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.” (Judges 6:12-13 NLT).

Beloved, are you currently asking yourself this question? Well, I totally understand because it isn’t until you go through certain things that you know that it isn’t exactly strange to question your position with the Lord.

I remember when a friend in Africa was telling me of how the Lord did some amazing things so I said “oh, so He’s on your street? Please don’t be selfish with Him. Please just help me ask Him ‘How far?’ ‘What is He up to?’ because at the rate at which He is going, it seems He hasn’t even bought His ticket to come to London” (LOL). They replied back to say that if they see Him on their Street, they would hold on tight to His clothes like the woman with the issue of blood. Hmmm… many of us would be like Jacob who said I won’t let You go until you bless me.

Beloved, what do you do when it looks like the Lord is nowhere to be found? Gideon was minding his business when the angel of the Lord appears to him. “What’s up mighty hero? The Lord is with you”. “Really? Where? Why am I suffering like this? Where is this God that we’ve heard so much about? For him to have asked this question, it means Gideon must have questioned himself so many times.

And then have you ever been in a position where like Gideon all you want is sign upon sign. Gideon said… If You do look on me with favor, then give me a sign that I’m really hearing from You (Judges 6:17 VOICE).

I like that he used the word ‘favor’ because there are times when your situation makes you question whether you are in right standing with God. Like my friend said “if I’ve done anything wrong please just show me what it is. In fact, I know there’s no way I haven’t done anything wrong so just have mercy. I remember someone saying “thank God the Bible says… surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life (Psalm 23:6) so, if at any point, goodness is not following me, then, surely mercy is.

Beloved, Gideon later found that the Lord had never once abandoned him so stop questioning whether the Lord that lives inside of you is with you. If you pay attention, He does speak to you. He says … “I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!” (Hebrews 13:5 AMP)

In the crowd, Jesus noticed one particular man who had been living with his disability for 38 years. He knew this man had been waiting here a long time.
[JESUS]: Are you here in this place hoping to be healed?
[DISABLED MAN]: Kind Sir… I cannot walk. If I am to be healed in the waters, someone must carry me into the pool. WITHOUT A HELPING HAND, someone else beats me to the water’s edge each time it is stirred.
[JESUS]: Stand up, carry your mat, and walk… He stood and walked for the first time in 38 years… (John 5:5-9 VOICE).

Beloved, I learnt something about the developmental process of a butterfly. I learnt that as part of the butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon, it manages to make a small hole which is often too small for its body to get through it and after a long struggle to come out through the hole, it often gets exhausted and may have to remain still for a while to regain strength. At this point, an observer might want to help the butterfly cut open the cocoon to release the butterfly but if you do that, it can never fly again. In fact, I read that if you help it, the butterfly that emerges ends up having small, unformed wings and eventually dies.

The fact is that the butterfly needs the struggle of coming out of its cocoon to push out a certain fluid into its wings to stretch it out and open it up so that it can fly. Also, it strengthens its wings by beating them against the cocoon so that its muscles can grow strong. So, basically, the strength the butterfly develops from the struggle is what it needs to fly and survive and so it is doomed if helped with the process.

Beloved, many times we stunt our developmental process because we are always looking to someone to help us with situations designed for our personal growth.

In our feature text, this man was bound for 38 years and was depending on the help of others but what he needed to do was STAND UP, CARRY HIS MAT AND WALK (Of course with the help of Jesus).

Perhaps you are a rescuer. Every little thing and you want to rescue or bail people out from one mess or the other. Not that there’s anything wrong with helping people and it’s sometimes hard watching someone you care about struggle but out of your kindness and eagerness to help the caterpillar in the cocoon stage, they can’t ever fly. They don’t have the strength to stand on their own so you need to be able to discern whether your bailing this person out all the time is for their own good.

Beloved, when you help a butterfly, you prevent it from developing the muscles it would need to survive. Are you disrupting yours or someone else’s growth process? Would you/they ever be able to STAND UP, CARRY THEIR MAT AND WALK?

But celebrate this: God selected the world’s foolish to bring shame upon those who think they are wise; likewise, He selected the world’s weak to bring disgrace upon those who think they are strong (1 Corinthians 1:27 VOICE).

Beloved, the bible records a story of how the Lord once used a handicapped man named Ehud to save his people. We are told that… when the people of Israel cried to the Eternal for relief, He raised up a LEFT-HANDED liberator from among them: Ehud, son of Gera the Benjaminite. The Israelites sent Ehud to bring tribute to Eglon, king of Moab. Before he set out, Ehud made for himself a double-edged sword about 18 inches in length, and he fastened it onto his right thigh, hidden under his clothes (Judges 3:15-16 VOICE).

So, though he was handicapped, God gave him wisdom and he hid his weapon underneath his clothes and off he went to the king… “I have a secret message for you.” So the king commanded his servants, “Be quiet!” and he sent them all out of the room (Judges 3:19 NLT).

The king sent his servants away and I’m sure they must have all been thinking “what can this lefty do?” but may we never underestimate anyone especially when the Lord‎ has His hands on them.

We are told that… Ehud walked over to Eglon, who was sitting alone in a cool upstairs room. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you!” As King Eglon rose from his seat, Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled out the dagger strapped to his right thigh, and plunged it into the king’s belly (Judges 3:20-21 NLT).

That was the end of the king but I’m sure if Ehud looked at his handicap before anything else, he would have felt “what can someone like me achieve?” According to my study bible notes… “God takes what is different about Ehud and makes it a strength. This is God’s habit—making unlikely heroes … Earlier God used Moses, an infant marked for death, to liberate His people from Egypt. Soon God will use two women, marginalized in a patriarchal society, to save Israel from Sisera. And much later, God will choose David, a young boy, to save Israel from the mighty Philistines. Time and again, God proves He can use anyone to accomplish His goals”.

Beloved, by handicap, I don’t just mean a condition in which part of your body or mind does not work normally. This includes any condition you experience that you or people currently think puts you at a disadvantage. However, those things that we think disqualify us in the world’s eyes are actually those things that qualify us for the Lord’s use because He is not looking at your abilities but what He can do through you.

Remember… my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Ephesians 6:10 NKJV).

…BE STRONG IN THE LORD [draw your strength from Him and be empowered through your union with Him] and in the power of His [boundless] might (Ephesians 6:10 AMP).

Beloved, reading this, I just couldn’t get pass ‘BE STRONG IN THE LORD’ … and the question that immediately came to mind was “what are you basing your strength on? Could it be on your own efforts… your education… your wisdom… your abilities?

We live in a world were life tends to make you hard. People find that they have to be strong to survive but the enemy can get you trapped in a lie if you think your strength comes from anything other than the Lord. If you ask google who is the strongest man in the bible, Samson’s name would come up but the bible lets us know that this was supernatural strength. Yes, he was even a very strong-willed man but the same story shows you his weakness and when the Lord took His hand off him, he became the weakest man ever.

So, I finally got round to watching the famous movie called ‘war room’ a few weeks ago. It’s a story of a ‘strong, black woman whose family was falling apart until she meets her newest client who challenges her to establish a ‘war room’ and a battle plan of prayer for her family and as she implements this strategy of fighting for her family, their lives take an unexpected turn and victory is worn.

Beloved, her successful career couldn’t win this battle, her mouth and intelligent words couldn’t win the battle either. Nothing she did could win this battle. It was when she got to that point where she realised the truth that her enemies are not flesh and blood enemies, that she took hold of the weapon of prayer (Ephesians 6:18) and said “Lord, help me” that the Lord stepped in and one of first weapons He handed to her was peace (Ephesians 6:15) which so confused her husband and ultimately the devil who isn’t after your husband, your car or your house but your peace of mind. She also found joy because… the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10)

Beloved, what are you basing your strength on?

Apostle Paul’s strength could have come from his achievements. He said… If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth. But I won’t do it… even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God… I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I AM STRONG (2 Corinthians 12:6-10 NLT).

Beloved… Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might… not in your own strength because… by strength no man can prevail (1 Samuel 2:9).

May He grant you out of the riches of His glory, to be strengthened and spiritually energized with power through His Spirit in your inner self, [indwelling your innermost being and personality], so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through your faith. And may you, having been [DEEPLY] ROOTED and [SECURELY] GROUNDED in LOVE, be fully capable of comprehending with all the saints (God’s people) the width and length and height and depth of His love [fully experiencing that amazing, endless love] (Ephesians 3:16-18 AMP)

Beloved, on Saturday I was asked to do a brief ministration on ‘making sure that the full amour of God is possessed’ based on how Apostle Paul told the Church in Ephesus to… put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious] (Ephesians 6:13 AMP).

Beloved, as I was meditating on this, one of the things that came to mind was that it’s one thing to stand however, what are we standing on? But what prompted my thought? Let’s see…

Paul told the Church in Ephesus to be properly equipped to ensure they are able to persevere till the end, withstanding the attacks of the enemy but then, we later read Jesus’ letter to this same church in Ephesus saying… “I know your works, your labor, your patience… YOU HAVE PERSEVERED and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and HAVE NOT BECOME WEARY. Nevertheless I have this against you, that YOU HAVE LEFT YOUR FIRST LOVE (Revelation 2:2-4 NKJV).

And here’s what Jesus said… Look how far you have fallen!… (Revelation 2:5 NLT). This means you could be doing all of the above but if your actions are not rooted in love, you’ve actually fallen. Perhaps differed hope has made your heart really sick to the point that you’re now just numb and your heart is no longer into what you are doing. You no longer have that passion and you’ve probably started questioning God’s love. The Voice translation says… It’s time to rethink and change your ways; go back to how you first acted…

Beloved, do you think you are standing firm when in the eyes of the Lord you’ve actually fallen?

Our feature text is one of Paul’s prayer to the church in Ephesus. In addition, he prayed…  that you may come to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself] (Ephesians 3:19 AMP).

Today, lets pray for a revival so that after doing all to stand that we truly stand, rooted deeply in love.

“You newborns can satisfy yourselves at her nurturing breasts. Yes, delight yourselves and drink your fill at her ample bosom. I’ll pour robust well-being into her like a river, the glory of nations like a river in flood. YOU’LL NURSE AT HER BREASTS, nestle in her bosom, and be bounced on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so I’ll comfort you. You will be comforted in Jerusalem.” (Isaiah 66:11-13 MSG)

Beloved, during an event I attended last month, the spiritual mother of the church, a 61 years old woman was told that the Lord was about to take her on a journey where He’s going to make her be very transparent with her flock about the things she’s been through in life. As the prophetess was ministering to her, you could tell that she was getting very uncomfortable that it actually got to the point that she said to the prophetess “could you please move on to the next person?” That was when the prophetess told her something so profound. She said “YOU HAVE TO BE A REAL MOTHER BECAUSE WOMEN DON’T BREASTFEED WITH THEIR CLOTHES ON”.

Beloved, what was she trying to say? She was simply talking about being transparent with her experience and that struck a chord because it’s a journeys that the Lord has led me down for the past few years especially when ministering to the youths but not just that, also with my own daughter and I’ve found that as I’ve been doing that, she’s been receiving healing and restoration in many areas of her life. Before then, we just found that she was repeating the same vicious circle I was caught up in and there are times when you have to put your pride to one side just so you could save your family and the relationship you have with your children.

Our feature text was one of those the Lord gave to me when I first started the ministry of the ‘meeting by the well’ which is based on real transparency and there are times when I try fighting to hold back some things but then like prophet Jeremiah said, the word… burns in my heart; it is like fire in my bones. I try to hold it all in, but I cannot (Jeremiah 20:9 VOICE).

I can never forget my daughter telling me one day that there were things she was going through that if I hadn’t opened my mouth to talk about, she would never had spoken about them. She also told me recently that if we get to heaven and the book of records is opened before me that I would see it recorded beside my name that her life was revolutionised when I started ‘meeting by the well’ ministry.

Beloved, how are you feeding your children? Isn’t it time to start being transparent with them?

Learn some lessons from this crooked but clever asset manager. Realize that the purpose of money is to strengthen friendships, to provide opportunities for being generous and kind. Eventually money will be useless to you—but if you use it generously to serve others, you will be welcomed joyfully into your eternal destination (Luke 16:9 VOICE).

Beloved, in this story, this same clever asset manager was initially accused of wrong doing… The rich man brought in the asset manager and said, “You’ve been accused of wrongdoing. I want a full and accurate accounting of all your financial transactions because you are really close to being fired.” The manager said to himself, “Oh, no! Now what am I going to do? I’m going to lose my job here, and I’m too weak to dig ditches and too proud to beg. I have an idea. This plan will mean that I have a lot of hospitable friends when I get fired.” (Luke 16:2-4 VOICE)

So the asset manager went ahead to reduce the debt of the debtors to the point that… when the manager’s boss realized what he had done, he congratulated him for at least being clever… (Luke 16: 8 VOICE)

Jesus’ message to us here is that the master was initially upset with the crooked, asset manager because he kept his money to himself. However, when he started helping the debtors who represents the poor in Jesus’ eye, the master saw him as clever.

Jesus goes on to talk about the rich man who had an opportunity to help poor Lazarus who was just outside his gate but he didn’t (Luke 16:19-21) and according to my bible notes… “the rich man, who represents what most people wish they could become, turns out to be the one who is hopeless in God’s judgment; he is rich in possessions but poor in compassion, and COMPASSION IS WHAT GOD MEASURES, NOT WEALTH. The kingdom of God, Jesus is making clear, calls rich people to stop working to increase their personal wealth portfolio; instead, it challenges them to join God by using their wealth and power on behalf of the poor.

Jesus goes on to give some good advice … If you’re faithful in small-scale matters, you’ll be faithful with far bigger responsibilities. If you’re crooked in small responsibilities, you’ll be no different in bigger things. If you can’t even handle a small thing like money, who’s going to entrust you with spiritual riches that really matter? If you don’t manage well someone else’s assets that are entrusted to you, who’s going to give over to you important spiritual and personal relationships to manage? (Luke 16:10-12 VOICE)

Beloved, it is the heart of God that we are good custodians of what He gives us and He would always test with the little first. So, as you go about in this new week why not find ways to … “Stand up for the poor and the orphan; advocate for the rights of the afflicted and those in need. Deliver the poor and the needy; rescue them from their evil oppressors.” (Psalm 82:3-4 VOICE)

23. April 2016 · Comments Off on INTOXICATED BY FAITH‏ · Categories: Faith, Jesus Christ

By faith, Abraham, at the time of testing, offered Isaac back to God. Acting in faith, he was as ready to return the promised son, his only son, as he had been to receive him—and this after he had already been told, “Your descendants shall come from Isaac.” Abraham figured that if God wanted to, he could raise the dead. In a sense, that’s what happened when he received Isaac back, alive from off the altar (Hebrews 11:19 MSG).

Beloved, in line with yesterday’s message on operating on another level, here’s an illustration that someone gave about a drunk man. They said… when a drunk man gets intoxicated by the spirit of alcohol, he doesn’t need to act drunk. He is just drunk and when in that state, things that appear abnormal to others appears normal to him. For example, where others see a gutter, he sees a very comfortable bed. At that point, he is under the influence of the spirit of alcohol and if he keeps maintaining that state, topping up with more alcohol, he would keep doing crazy things until it wears off.

That’s the dimension of faith where you are just operating under its influence. The Prophet Ezekiel said… The Spirit came into me as he spoke, and he set me on my feet. I listened carefully to his words (Ezekiel 2:2 NLT). This is about the Spirit that enters you to enable you hear and receive the word of God. Like we are told… Faith comes by hearing the word of God… and like the drunkard, the more word you take in, the more intoxicated you become and you start to have the faith to believe God for crazy things.

This is the state were you don’t see problems or obstacles. You are floating above problems. It when Peter initially walked on water before he took his attention off Jesus (Matthew 14:28-30).

When you are acting with such faith, people are bound to ask “why are you acting like a lunatic?” and your answer is “I don’t know. I can’t explain it. There’s just something inside of me that’s propelling me to act in this way.

I couldn’t help but think of Abraham. The Lord came to him with a ridiculous test to offer up Isaac and without complaining, he got up the next morning and off he went to do what the Lord had asked. At a point… Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?… where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” “God will provide…” Abraham answered… (Genesis 22:7-8 NLT) and truly, when they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, God did provide (Genesis 22:11-13).

Beloved, Abraham was intoxicated by His faith in the Lord and is referred to as the father of our faith but today we are in a better position because we have Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2) and when He says step out of the both and come to Me walking on water, let’s get so intoxicated with His word that we can walk on water.

Four men tried to bring a crippled friend to Him; but since the crowd prevented their carrying him close enough to get Jesus’ attention, they climbed up onto the roof, opened a hole in it, and lowered the paralyzed man on his mat down to Jesus. Jesus recognized the faith of these men… (Mark 2:3-5 VOICE).

Beloved, referring to these four men that climbed through the roof, someone said something recently that really caught my attention. They said “because everyone was ‎used to traditional conventional means, they looked at the door but these ones decided to climbed through the roof”.

Hmmm… so true. These four men refused to look at limitations and I can only just imagine that other people were turned away because of the crowd but when you follow the crowd, you sometimes meet a closed door‎. This is when you just go by what people say and statements like “this is how we do it” become show stoppers. However, people with ridiculous faith will always look for other ways. These men ripped the roof off and when you decide to think outside the box, new possibilities start to open up for you. They were told there was no room for them, however, when they decided to go to another level, they made room for them.

Here, this door in question was a door on the physical level but they had to locate another door that allows you to go in and out of the spiritual realm and that’s what got Jesus’ attention. That is what faith is. According to the Bible, faith is what gives you access to things in the spiritual realm… faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1 NKJV).

This door was closed in the physical realm but it was open in another realm for these man.

I’m also thinking of Zaccheus… He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” (Luke 19:3-5 NLT). Operating in another realm, opened the door for Zaccheus.

Beloved, the prayer of Jabez can also be understood in this light… Jabez, whose name commemorates his mother’s labor pains, was more honorable than his brothers. He asked the God of Israel, “Please bless me and EXTEND MY TERRITORY. Let Your hand be with me and guard me from harm so I will not experience pain as my mother did.” And God did just that (1 Chronicles 4:9-10 VOICE).

‎Jabez asked that the Lord should extend his territory. What does this mean?  It means, “Lord, lift the roof off my life… lift the roof off my mind… so that I can get to that realm where my faith opens doors. We too should also pray like Jabez so that we can live a life without limit.

Get up, and tell the people to purify themselves for tomorrow. Tell them that the Eternal One, the God of Israel says, “There are items among you that were supposed to be destroyed as I commanded. You will not be able to resist your enemies unless you remove the banned items from among you.” (Joshua 7:13 VOICE)

Beloved, whenever I face any form of attack or setback, my first question is “where have I opened a door?” The story behind our feature text is that the Israelites were confident that they were going to win their fight against their enemy but to their surprise, they were defeated. They couldn’t understand why but when they took the case to the Lord, He made them realise that they had things in their possession that were meant to be destroyed.

According to my Bible Study notes, “there’s always an explanation in the Book of Joshua when the people of Israel are defeated in their battles for the promised land, and that explanation is not that God has been unfaithful. It’s the other way around: God tells the people of Israel to do something, and they don’t. God allows their defeats so that they can see the error of their ways”.

In this case, Achan was the ‎culprit and so… Joshua spoke to Achan, “My son, give glory to God, the God of Israel. Make your confession to him. Tell me what you did. Don’t keep back anything from me.” Achan answered Joshua, “It’s true. I sinned against God, the God of Israel. This is how I did it. In the plunder I spotted a beautiful Shinar robe, two hundred shekels of silver, and a fifty-shekel bar of gold, and I COVETED AND TOOK THEM…” (Joshua 7:19-21 MSG)

Unfortunately, Achan and his family were killed because of that incident but thank God for Jesus and like a friend would say; “Ruky, say that again”. Well, thank God for Jesus. We are now in a position today were we can come to Him, confess our sins and get rid of whatever it is that is causing the defeat in our lives.

The Bible says… submit yourselves to the One true God and fight against the devil and his schemes. If you do, he will run away in failure. Come close to the One true God, and He will draw close to you. Wash your hands; you have dirtied them in sin. Cleanse your heart, because your mind is split down the middle, your love for God on one side and selfish pursuits on the other (James 4:7-8 VOICE).

The Bible also advices… let us drop every extra weight, every sin that clings to us and slackens our pace, and let us run with endurance the long race set before us (Hebrews 12:1 VOICE).

Today, lets pray that the Lord opens our eyes to see if we’ve opened a door to the enemy so we can close that door immediately.
