“Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. WHEN HE RETURNED HOME, he heard music and dancing in the house, and he asked one of the servants what was going on. ‘Your brother is back,’ he was told… We are celebrating because of his safe return.’ “The older brother was angry and WOULDN’T GO IN… (Luke 15:25-28 NKJV).

Beloved, the prodigal son came back to His Father. What about the older son? He is a cause of concern because we are not told whether he came into the house… whether he came to his Father. Did he come to his senses? Did he have a change of heart?

The older son represents the Pharisees and teachers of religious law. What are the some of the things that hindered his walk with the Father?

Firstly, he was Judgmental (Luke 15:2). Why is associating with such sinful people—even eating with them? He was angry and bitter (Luke 15:28). Why are you celebrating because of his safe return? He also lacked love and compassion for his lost brother (Luke 15: 2, 27-28) but Jesus writes this message to the Church in Ephesus… “I know all the things you do. I have seen your hard work and your patient endurance. I know you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims of those who say they are apostles but are not. You have discovered they are liars. You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love Me or EACH OTHER AS YOU DID AT FIRST! Look how far you have fallen… (Revelation 2:2-5 NLT).

He was Jealous and though he was loyal and diligent, he was also frustrated. Why you? What about me? All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to… Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate… (Luke 15:30 NLT)

Beloved, have you ever asked this question; “how did you know he was hanging out with prostitutes? Were you there? Perhaps, he spent every day imagining and wishing he could do what his brother was doing. Have you ever had friends that would invite you places you know you shouldn’t go to? You say “no” but then are left wondering how much fun they are having‎.

Last month, I reviewed a book where the Author said “there is nothing worse than a lukewarm Christian; People with one leg in church and another in the world. Such people are miserable and cannot enjoy sin because they know it is wrong, yet they cannot approach God because of the sin”. How true is that?

Beloved, these were some of the things that hindered the walk of the older brother from entering in… and here we are looking at the heart of a son that hinders his relationship with his father. Does any of these symptoms describe you?

There’s one more…

“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him (Luke 15:20 NLT).

Beloved in this story of the prodigal son, the Greek word used for ‘Younger’ is ‘NÉOS’ meaning Young, Fresh or New and according to HELPS Word-studies, ‘New’ refers to ‘new on the scene’, ‘recently revealed’, ‘what was not there before’, or ‘what is recently discovered’.

So, I dare to say that Jesus was actually referring to the new kind of relationship with His Father that He was introducing… the good news of the Gospel… the message of grace and wanted to reveal how unfortunately, some would respond to it.

Here, we see that the younger son understood his identity as his father’s son. He also understood his inheritance but unfortunately lacked maturity and like Paul said… the heir, as long as he is a child… though he is master of all, but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father (Galatians 4:1-2 NKJV)

Understanding his inheritance, the younger son asked his father for it and then left but notice that he didn’t leave immediately. We are told that… not many days after that, the younger son gathered up all that he had and journeyed into a distant country, and there he wasted his fortune in reckless and LOOSE [FROM RESTRAINT] living (Luke 15:13 AMPC).

Beloved, the question is; “Why would a young son want to leave his fathers house?”

The word ‘Restraint’ means ‘restriction’; a way of limiting, controlling or stopping something. So, perhaps, he didn’t like the discipline that came with living in the house because…  a father disciplines whom he loves (Hebrews 12:6).

I can only just imagine that he was like, just give me my inheritance and don’t tell me how to live my life. Unfortunately, with that kind of mind-set, the devil was able to lure him away and he eventually left. He was only interested in his inheritance and didn’t care about his relationship with his father else he won’t have left. He would have sat at His Father’s feet to learn and grow but he travelled to a DISTANT country…

His heart was so far away from his father but what was the end result? He lost it all and became desperately hungry and in need. The word hungry means longing, to covet, to desire, lust after but sex, drugs, alcohol, could not quench that longing and as I was studying this, I wondered why his father didn’t go after him. Perhaps it’s because God… has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]… (Ecclesiastes 3:11 AMP)

Beloved, unfortunately this is how many have embraced the message of grace. The beauty of this story however, is that he had a change of heart and came back to his father who received him with open hands. Could the Father be speaking to your heart today?

…Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons (Luke 15:11 NLT).

Beloved, we tend to focus on the prodigal son alone when we tell this story but we ought to also focus on the main issue Jesus was trying to address which can be found at the beginning of the chapter which says… Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that He was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them! So Jesus told them this story (Luke 15:1-3 NLT).

Jesus then proceeds to share three different parables; ‘The Parable of the Lost Sheep’ and Lost Coin which we can relate to the sinful people in the text. However, when Jesus tells the Parable of the Lost Son, he mentions two sons; the younger and older son.

Beloved, the parable of the lost son is a story that actually presents us with the Father-son relationship of not one, but two sons and at some point in the story, both of them left home and were returning home. Yes, the younger son went astray but he came to his senses and… he returned home TO HIS FATHER (Luke 15:20 NLT). The NKJV says… he arose and CAME TO HIS FATHER while the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition says… he got up and CAME TO HIS [OWN] FATHER…

However, for older son, we are told… “he came and DREW NEAR TO THE HOUSE…  (Luke 15:25 NKJV). There’s no mention of coming to his father and then we are later told that… “The older brother was angry and WOULDN’T GO IN… (Luke 15:25-28 NLT).

Beloved, let’s notice the difference between these two walks; Father/Son/Relationship versus house/building/Church/Legalism/Servant.

Now, the word used for ‘older’ is ‘PRESBUTEROS’ which means ‘ELDER’. It is used among the Jews to refer to members of the great council or Sanhedrin whom we know eventually ended up trying Jesus. It is also used in other places in the Bible to refer to the chief priests and scribes. So, we can say that the older son points to the Pharisees and teachers of religious law whose walk was based on a very legalistic approach that followed a set of rules with no intimate relationship with God. Here, Jesus was addressing people who had a preconceived idea of the Father that hindered their relationship and walk with Him.

So, in this story, we are presented with two faulty relationships; two extremes representing two different types of hearts that hindered their walk with their father. What are the symptoms of these two relationships?

Let’s find out in the next few days to see if any describe you? For today, why not meditate on this chapter and ask the Lord…  Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalm 139:23-24 NLT)

After God moved Saul aside, He made David king in his place. God had this to say about David: “I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after My own heart. HE’S THE KIND OF KING WHO WILL RULE IN WAYS THAT PLEASE ME.” (Acts 13:22 VOICE)

Beloved, which way was this that God was referring to? The Amplified Bible translation says… ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart [conforming to My will and purposes], who will do all My will.’

He will do all My will not his will however, I’ve found that most times, what we want to do gets in the way of what God wants to do but God was referring to the way that stays out of His way and I remember listening to someone say they once told God, “I want to stay out of Your way because that’s when you can use me the most”. They went on to say that “until we can get out of God’s way and it really becomes all about God and not about us that’s when we can turn the world upside down‎ for Jesus Christ”.

Beloved, I’m immediately thinking of the Scripture that says God’s ways are not our ways and I like how the Voice Translation says… My intentions are not always yours, and I do not go about things as you do. My thoughts and My ways are above and beyond you, just as heaven is far from your reach here on earth (Isaiah 55:8-9 VOICE).

I can only just imagine how presenting or going after our own ways can be an obstacle in God’s way.

We’ve are in the season where we are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ who had to die to save us from our sins and I like how the book of Hebrews says… In the end, the blood of bulls and of goats is powerless to take away sins. So when Jesus came into the world, He said, Sacrifices and offerings were not what You wanted, but instead a body that You prepared for Me. Burnt offerings and sin offerings were not what pleased You. Then I said, “See, I have come to do Your will, God, as it is inscribed of Me in the scroll of the book.” (Hebrews 10:4-7 VOICE).

Beloved, God’s mission to save us won’t have been possible if Jesus stood in God’s way but Jesus made it clear why He came. He said…  here’s the reason: I have come down from heaven not to pursue My own agenda but to do what He desires. I am here on behalf of the Father who sent Me (John 6:38 VOICE).

NOT TO PURSUE MY OWN AGENDA… Beloved, our agenda and motives are some of the obstacle that get in the Lord’s way but I’ve also had to say “Lord, I want to stay out of Your way…”

What about you?

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? (1 Corinthians 15:55 KJV).

Beloved, we serve a living Jesus who cannot be found in the grave. His enemies crucified Him and thought it was all over. They thought they could get rid of Him; that that was the end… but God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was IMPOSSIBLE for death to keep its hold on Him (Acts 2:24 NIV).

But the question is; if God knew He was going to raise Him from the dead why did He allow them to crucify Him in the first place? Why does God give the enemy any chance to carry out his evil plan? Simple! It is because God is using him to accomplish His own plan. All those that crucified Jesus did not realise that they were a big part of God’s ultimate plan to save mankind.

God allowed the enemy to think he was in charge for a while. They tortured Jesus and gave Him the death sentence hoping that it would silence Him once and for all but… none of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8 NIV).

I can only imagine the looks on their faces when they realised that they had been played. There’s nothing worse than knowing your carefully thought out plan backfired. A typical… ‘you intended to harm me, BUT God intended it all for good’ (Genesis 50:20) moment. Isn’t it very humiliating to know that you were the one that got played in your own game? Jesus… having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross (Colossians 2:15 NIV).

More than 2000 years ago, the enemy thought he was smart by trying to kill Jesus but he didn’t realise that it wasn’t actually death but the birth of many. Jesus said… Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds (John 12:24 NIV).

Dear friend, as Christian around the world celebrate the risen Lord today, let this be an encouragement to you. The enemy would be taken unawares when it comes to a sudden change in your situation… as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:8-9 NIV).

Apostle Paul said…I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead. I want to suffer with Him, sharing in His death, SO THAT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER I WILL EXPERIENCE THE RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD! (Philippians 3:10-11 NLT)

Beloved, you almost get the sense that Paul is speaking as if there’s a danger of missing and coming short of something and so was desperate to do whatever he needed to do to experience a certain dimension in His walk with Christ. This isn’t because he thought he could do anything to gain his salvation. NO! He knew that Jesus Christ had paid the ultimate price for that but this is a holy fear of shortcomings in certain areas and probably why he urges us to… continue to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).

Paul knows that there is some pressing forward to do. He has got to keep on going and needs whatever help he can get from our High Priest who has been there, done it, got the victory and has made help available for our own journey (Hebrews 4:15-16).

The whole purpose why Paul makes this statement in our feature text is to know and associate with Jesus in a way that transformed him both spiritually and morally. He knew this could not be done in his own strength so was willing to do and suffer anything to gain access and experience the mighty power that raised Jesus from the dead. That same power dwells in us and is working in us to change us (Romans 8:11).

Jesus Christ has made available for us the power we need to change us into His image and likeness and for me, I don’t want to dance around that power but tap into it and see it working in my life. I want to know and experience all of Christ and I’m not deceived… It may take some tears, some suffering, letting go of things and dying daily to self.

And …not that I have already attained this—that is, I have not already been perfected—but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single-minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14 NET).

Beloved, we would not reach complete perfection until when Christ returns to take us into His eternal kingdom but it is my earnest prayer that we ask for the strength and grace to keep pressing on and striving towards the price. I pray that God opens our eyes to understand what we need to do to know Him more… the strength to surrender to His will in our garden of gethsemane, carry our cross and to allow what needs to die, die so that we can live for Him.

25. March 2016 · Comments Off on WON’T THE JUDGE OF THIS EARTH DO WHAT IS RIGHT? · Categories: Grace, Help, Mercy, Relationship, Restoration

Surely it can’t be Your nature to do something like that—to kill the right-living along with those who act wickedly, to consign the innocent to the same fate as the guilty. It is inconceivable to me that You, my God, would do anything like that! Will not the “Merciful and Loving Judge” of all the earth do what is just? (Genesis 18:25 VOICE)

Many have a picture of a harsh God and the devil has done a very good job at making us see God incorrectly. He operates very effectively under this religious spirit that is all about the laws of God but beloved, even when the Israelites were under strict laws, we occasionally see some bold individuals who decided to take a bold step and reason with God and in those cases, we see the heart of God because he heard their case‎ and reasoned with them.

Abraham is one of such cases. We see from our feature text that he was able to negotiate with God. And then we have some few Israelite men who asked Moses… Why should we be disallowed from offering the Eternal’s sacrifice along with the rest of the Israelites at the appropriate time, just because the disposing of a dead body made us ritually impure? (Numbers 9:7 VOICE).

What did Moses do? He said… Just hold on a little while. Let me find out what the Eternal has to say about it (Numbers 9:8 VOICE).

Beloved, God listened to their argument and this is what He told Moses… Tell the Israelites, if any one of you or your descendants becomes ritually impure due to the necessity of handling a dead body, he can nevertheless still celebrate My Passover a month after everyone else does… (Numbers 9:9-10 VOICE).

And then, we also have the Daughters of Zelophehad who didn’t have any sons to claim his inheritance but they matched up to Moses saying… Our father died in the wilderness… but he left no sons. Why should his name disappear from his clan simply because no boys were born to him? We request that you give us land of our own… Moses disappeared inside the tent to ask the Eternal One what should be done, and He answered Moses. Zelophehad’s daughters make a good point. They’re right, so do as they ask. Give them an inheritance such as would be given to a son… (Numbers 27:3-7 VOICE).

Beloved, they got God to change the law.

So, what am I trying to say? Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right? (NLT). The Lord yearns to have a real relationship with you ‎regardless of what you think is separating you from Him and today He is saying… Come now, and let us reason together… (Isaiah 1:18)… The Voice Translation says…Come on now, let’s walk and talk; let’s work this out…  So… step boldly to the throne of grace, where we can find mercy and grace to help when we need it most (Hebrews 4:16 VOICE).

24. March 2016 · Comments Off on IS WHAT YOU CALL STRENGTH REALLY A WEAKNESS? · Categories: Humility, Jesus Christ

And He said to me, “…My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me (2 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV).

Beloved, first of all let me start by saying I am a woman and I am black. I said that just in case it isn’t obvious (LOL). So, here we go…

On Saturday, we had the meeting by the well event. During our discussion, I happened to reveal that the phrase “I am a strong, black woman” actually makes me cringe. How about just saying “I am a strong Christian woman?” But then again, let’s visit that word ‘strong’.

At some point, one of the guest that shared her story about having a nice car, nice job, money in the bank, couldn’t see what a man can offer her that she couldn’t offer herself (the typical strong, black woman script) wanted to know what to do because she couldn’t understand why men found her intimidating. As a result, she was finding it difficult to settle down.

So, though, I’m not a man, I tried to answer ‎the question as best as I could and the first thing the Lord laid in my spirit was to talk about humility. I also shared of a lady that had a similar question who was born into a family of seven sisters and one brother. She said they were all strong, black women but the problem was that only one of the sisters were married. The rest were finding relationships difficult because men find ‘strong, black women’ intimidating.

Beloved, as she mentioned ‘strong, black women’, her pastor stopped her immediately and said that’s the problem. You guys are not strong. ‎She tried to argue with him but then he said what you are calling strength is actually weakness because if you were strong, you won’t have the problem you have. So, the first solution to your problem is recognising that what you term strength is actually a weakness because it is only when you admit you have a weakness, that the Lord would step in with His strength because like the Lord says… for [My] power is being perfected [and is completed and shows itself most effectively] in [your] weakness.”  (2 Corinthians 12:9 AMP).

Hmmm… Beloved, how many negative things have presented themselves as strengths in our lives? The sad thing is that until we get to the point where we stop allowing the devil dress up our weaknesses as strength, we would keep going round in a vicious cycle.

Paul said… I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and] may dwell in me. So I am well pleased with weaknesses… for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak [in human strength], then I am strong [truly able, truly powerful, truly drawing from God’s strength] (2 Corinthians 12:9-10 AMP).

23. March 2016 · Comments Off on HOW’S YOUR HEALTH? · Categories: Anger, Healing, Jesus Christ, Offense, Restoration, Words

The [intrinsically] good man produces what is good and honorable and moral out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart; and the [intrinsically] evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out of the evil [in his heart]; for his mouth speaks from the overflow of his heart (Luke 6:45 AMP).

Beloved, when you go to a doctor, the first thing they ask you to do is “say aah”. They would ask to see your tongue because the tongue reveals the health of a person. In the same way, if you want to know the emotional, psychological and spiritual health of a person, just listen to them talk‎.

If you want to know someone that’s still struggling to forgive, if they are still cursing their offender out‎ all the time, then there’ s still a lot of offense, anger and bitterness. All you would keep hearing is that they keep repeating what that person did to them and how they want vengeance. You won’t hear… you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good (Genesis 50:20)… like Joseph said. You won’t hear Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing (Luke 23:34) like Jesus said or even Stephen (Acts 7:60). No, you have to be spiritually whole to do that.

The Voice translation of our feature text says… a person with an evil RESERVOIR in his heart pours out evil things. The heart overflows in the words a person speaks; your words reveal what’s within your heart.

Recently, I was sharing of how in the past, when you tell me something that hurts me, I would deliberately look into my RESERVOIR to dig out words that would sting you. I was an expert at that but beloved, it was coming from a place of bitterness. When you’ve had to go through painful situations in life, you feel as if the world owes you and you are constantly lashing out at everyone but that’s not the solution.

When you go to the doctor and tell them what you are dealing with, he isn’t so much interested in the symptoms but the root cause of the matter because a headache may just be symptoms of something else and if you keep taking pain killers for the headache, all you are doing is momentarily‎ relieving the symptoms. But when you decide to deal with the cause of the headache, you dig deeper.

I was listening to someone talk about the different between scabs and scars. When you have scabs, which is a hard covering of dried blood that forms over a wound to cover and protect it as it heals, you’re not healed yet but when you’ve got scars then you’re already healed and can show it to others just like Jesus showed His scars to His disciples (John 20:25-27).

Beloved, how’s your health? Do you have scabs or scars? What are the words that are coming from your mouth? ‘Say aah’. The Lord wants to examine your tongue today.

22. March 2016 · Comments Off on WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN THE HOUSE? · Categories: God's Plan, Help, Jesus Christ, Prayer, Testimony

One day the widow… came to Elisha and cried out, “…a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.” “What can I do to help you?” Elisha asked. “Tell me, WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN THE HOUSE?”… (2 Kings 4:1-2 NLT).

Beloved, I want to share a testimony of a family of four children; two girls and two boys born in that order. The two girls were born in the UK but a couple of years after the second girl was born, their parents left the UK for their home country in Africa where they later had their two boys.

They spent a long time in Africa until things became really difficult for the family. As time went on, the family took it in turns to settle back in the UK and for both sisters already being UK citizens, it wasn’t such a difficult process. However, for everyone else, they had to come over with visiting visas which had many restrictions including a limited period of stay.

This soon became a problem especially when the time came to renew the youngest son’s visa. It almost looked like a dead end but then he began to cry out to the Lord and the Lord started to direct his steps and he began to ask his parents questions; “When you guys were here; didn’t you apply for British naturalisation?” “Yes, but we didn’t wait for a response before leaving”, they replied.

So, he proceeded to ask the home office about that application. They replied back to say the application was granted and a letter posted to his parents. However, migrating back to Africa, his parents had sold their house a week before the letter arrived so it was sent back to the home office.

In a nutshell, what this revelation meant was that both parents and every child born to them after the date their naturalisation was issued were automatically British Citizens ‎and didn’t need any visa to stay in the UK. So, within one week of that conversation, four British passports were issued and the parents and sons who once had visa problems were now able to stay freely in the country.

Why am I sharing this story? Recently, I was telling someone that most times, the answer to our problem is right in front of us. In our feature text, Elisha asked the widow “WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN THE HOUSE?”

We also see something similar with Hagar who was crying because of her son’s need but… God opened Hagar’s eyes. She looked up from her grief and saw a well of water not far away. She went over to it, filled the container she carried with water, and gave the young man a drink (Genesis 21:19 VOICE).

Beloved, these parents left the UK in 1973 and this testimony happened in 2003. So, for 30 years, even before there was a problem, they already had the answer. It just took God to open their eyes to the answer at the time of need. So, isn’t it time to start asking the Lord to open your eyes to see what’s already in your house?
