Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him (John 4:20-23 NKJV).

Beloved, a few weeks ago, I went on a retreat with a few ladies and one of the sessions on our programme was ‘Worship in Spirit and in Truth’. Well, we all had our notes to teach on the topic but because ‘meeting by the well’ is very much a practical ministry, the Lord sure had something else in mind and by the time we were done, I had practical notes to go with my theory.

So, let the worship session begin…

Beloved, we ended up having a major argument which went along the lines of… ‘the way you Africans sing your songs versus the way we Jamaicans sing our songs’. The interesting thing is that it was the same worship song but sung in a slightly different way and one admitted that she struggled with the way you Africans sing your version and at some point, was contemplating just looking for a Jamaican ministry to join. The funny thing is that ‎she found it strange when ‘we Africans’ said we also struggled with your version (LOL). Why would you find it strange? What gives your version authority over mine? It was an interesting conversation which just shed some light on the conflict that the Samaritan woman found herself in.

Which one is it? “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Beloved, in the end, we all admitted we couldn’t feel the presence of God but once we were able to push past that, we were fine. ‎So, is culture a barrier to worshipping in spirit and in truth or were we just in the flesh?

When I did my Masters in Applied Theology, we did a study on Christ and culture: Five views by H. Richard Niebuhr.

1. Christ against culture
2. Christ of culture
3. Christ above culture
4. Christ and culture in paradox
5. Christ the transformer of culture

Beloved, which one do you think it is? Today being Sunday, as you worship the Lord, why not ask yourself this question; am I a true worshipper? Because the Lord is seeking such

Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock? (John 4:12 NIV)

Beloved, a few days ago, ‎my daughter told me about a dream she had. She’s been invited for a speaking engagement in one of these non-English speaking countries later this year, and in her dream, she saw herself in the venue. As she arrived, the hosting pastor immediately put her on stage. She was confused. I can’t just go on stage like that. You haven’t briefed me beforehand on what to say. That’s not how it’s done. You are also supposed to brief me and then you’re also supposed to give me an interpreter but the host just urged her to go ahead without an interpreter.

He showed her a board that had what he wanted her to talk about and it was on timing. So reluctantly, she proceeded and immediately the Holy Spirit told her to turn to Ecclesiastes‎ and as she began to minister, she realised that even without an interpreter, everyone could understand what she was saying and as I pondered on this, what happened on the day of Pentecost came to mind (Acts 2:1-10)

She then said as she was ministering, she was surprised that I walked into the venue, walked right to the front and sat down and after listening to her for a bit, I wanted to take over because I felt she wasn’t doing it properly and that was how we started fighting.

At that point, I said let me tell you all about your dream because that’s what the Lord has been speaking to me recently. As you were preaching, you started hearing my critical, traditional voice in your head; “this is how it should be done”‎ and you were struggling with what the Holy Spirit, the giver of fresh, Living Water wanted to so. Beloved, my daughters point of reference was ‘Ruky’s well’

As she was telling me about the Scripture she was given in her dream, she said she needed to go and check her Bible to see what it says but I said if it’s in Ecclesiastes, then it must be Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 where it talks about a time for everything. This just goes to show the kind of people the Holy Spirit will use‎ in this season. I don’t need your theology degree. Just stand there and I’ll fill your mouth with what to say. Now, this isn’t to say that studying is not good, a good worker should study to show themselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15) but for those who keep telling themselves I’m not educated. I don’t know the Bible like my pastor does, it just means God doesn’t need your education.

Beloved, in this season, the Holy Spirit is moving in ways that may be contrary to our traditional ways of doing thing and you need to decide whether we are ready to flow with Him.

And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men… All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition… MAKING THE WORD OF GOD OF NO EFFECT through your tradition which you have handed down… (Mark 7:7-13 NKJV)

I recently hear a story of a young woman who was always arguing with her husband because she always threw the head of fish away. When asked why, her reply was… “That’s what my mum used to do”. The argument was getting out of hand so she decided to find out why her mum threw the head of fish away. “Mum, why do you throw the head of fish away?” she asked. “That’s what my mum used to do”, her mum replied. Her mum was then made to ask her own mum who had the same answer. Finally, they got to the great-grandson ma who supposedly introduced this family tradition and when asked why she threw the head of fish away, she said… “That’s because in our days the ovens we had were too small to fit the whole fish so I had to cut off the head and throw it away”.

‎Oh dear!!! So our young lady was fighting her husband over something that had no basis. Who knows what would have happened to her marriage if she didn’t stop to question her actions.

I laughed when I heard it but then on a serious note, I remembered the main focus of my Applied Theology programme which was to look back at church practices over the years and see which ones are really faithful to the Bible and Christianity and which are just man-made tradition. Hmmm… You would be surprised at how we are trapped in tradition which according to Jesus… makes the word of God of no effect. It becomes a barrier to what Jesus wants to do in your life.

Jesus offered the Samaritan woman by the well living water but then she asked… Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”(John 4:12 NKJV)

That’s tradition speaking. She was caught up in tradition, failing to realise that all it did was see her going round in a virtuous cycle. But like someone said… why are we so loyal to ineffectiveness? Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again (John 4:13 NKJV)

At the beginning of the year, I told the Lord that this is the year I’m killing every religious spirit in me. I’m not going to be caught in a routine just because this is how it’s always been done. I’ve decided to always reflect back at my actions and ask myself… Why am I doing this? What am I getting out of it? Is the word of God actually working in my life?

Is the word of God working in your life? Have you asked yourself… WHY AM I DOING WHAT I AM DOING‏?

SELAH

God bless you
