Until the time that his word [of prophecy regarding his brothers] came true, the word of the Lord tested and refined him (Psalm 105:19 AMP)

Beloved, we all have loads of dreams, promises, and prophecies from the Lord but I’ve found out that while these promises are more important to us, God is more interested in what happens to us while we wait for their fulfilment and that’s the development of one’s character and our transformation into the image of Christ.

The New Living Translation of our feature text says… Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, THE LORD TESTED JOSEPH’S CHARACTER.

Beloved, we know the story of Joseph. He may have thought that God had forgotten about him after all the years that past between the time he had his dream and its fulfillment but every step of the way, the Lord was testing his character. Somehow, he found himself as a slave in Potiphar’s house but because… “Joseph was a strikingly handsome man. As time went on, his master’s wife became infatuated with Joseph and one day said, “Sleep with me.” He wouldn’t do it. He said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master doesn’t give a second thought to anything that goes on here—he’s put me in charge of everything he owns. He treats me as an equal. The only thing he hasn’t turned over to me is you. You’re his wife, after all! How could I violate his trust and sin against God?” She pestered him day after day after day, BUT HE STOOD HIS GROUND. HE REFUSED TO GO TO BED WITH HER” (Genesis 39:6-10 MSG).

Who knows; satan may have appeared before God while Joseph was in Potiphar’s house. He must have said; “Your boy is doing great because he hasn’t faced real temptation. Allow me to tempt him with something great. Let’s see how he would handle the pressure from Potiphar’s wife. Let’s see if he won’t fall for the temptation” and God must have said, “go ahead and give it your best shot” and so the testing began but Joseph used tests like this to develop integrity and fine character. Satan may have had a different plan in mind, but God must have said “let me allow it to see if far away from home, in a place where nobody knows him, where he thinks he is free to do whatever he wants, whether he would still maintain a good character” and Joseph passed the test. He was not about to sin against God.

Beloved, what if Joseph did not develop such character? When he eventually became governor over all of Egypt, don’t you think the women would have been in trouble? What test of character is God putting you through? How is it going?

I just got back from Israel and one thing that was obvious was that the Lord took us all there to test our character; some in humility, patience, long-suffering, integrity, obedience to what He said we should or should not do and all I could say was Lord, give me the grace to see me through.

Beloved, what about you?

After going a little farther, He fell to the ground [distressed by the weight of His spiritual burden] and began to pray that if it were possible [in the Father’s will], the hour [of suffering and death for the sins of mankind] might pass from Him. He was saying, “Abba, Father! All things are possible for You; take this cup [of judgment] away from Me; but not what I will, but what You will.” (Mark 14:35-36 AMP)

Beloved, using yesterday’s message as backdrop, I remember when someone was telling me that they were truly tired of praying for a situation they were facing and the question is what do you do when you’ve prayed, you’ve fasted, you’ve done everything you know how to do but the mountain is not moving? Like Jesus said to the Father in our feature text, “all things are possible for You” so, why is this situation not changing?

Yes, all things are possible for the Lord but there are some crosses you may have to carry for a while to achieve a greater purpose. This was exactly what I told this person and someone else confirmed it. Not easy to hear but God surely is working out a greater testimony.

Beloved, when you find yourself in such situations, does that mean God has left you to your own devise? Absolutely not! In the case of Jesus, we read that while He was wrestling with the reality that He had to carry His cross… there appeared to Him an angel from heaven, strengthening Him in spirit (Luke 22:43 AMP). I like the way the Message translation put it… “Father, remove this cup from Me. But please, not what I want. What do you want?” AT ONCE AN ANGEL FROM HEAVEN WAS AT HIS SIDE, STRENGTHENING HIM.

Strength was what was needed. So, as you submit to the will of God; “Father, give me the strength to carry this cross” is the prayer that is needed.

We also see the same sort of thing happening to Apostle Paul. When going through his own trial, he said… Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, “MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR YOU, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me (2 Corinthians 12:8-9 NIV).

Beloved, Grace was what was needed. “Father, give me the grace to go through this and come out stronger and wiser” is the prayer that is needed because… we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28 NIV)

Beloved, this is one of those messages or Scriptures that we don’t like to hear about but unfortunately, we can’t erase it from the Bible, so whatever it is that the Lord may be asking you to endure for a season… let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing (James 1:4 AMP).

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me. He said to me, ‘I will make you fruitful, and I will multiply your descendants. I will make you a multitude of nations. And I will give this land of Canaan to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.’ (Genesis 48:3-4 NLT)

Beloved, the above conversation took place between Jacob and Joseph towards the end of his life where he is telling his son about the covenant promise the Lord made to their family but because life happened to Jacob, it took this long for Him to remember this promise and I bet it’s only now he starts to see things differently. This was a man that had a personal encounter with the Lord where the Lord revealed the promise but the moment Jacob thought his son was dead, he decided it was all over, failing to realise that it didn’t matter what the situation looked like, all things were working out all along for his good (Romans 8:28).

Beloved, despite the Lord’s promise, Jacob focused on problems and so decided to live a depressed life. When He thought Joseph was dead… His family all tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “I will go to my grave mourning for my son,” he would say, and then he would weep (Genesis 37:35 NLT). Later, he told Pharaoh… “I have lived 130 long, hard years, and I am not nearly as old as many of my ancestors.” (Genesis 47:9 TLB)

Jacob settled for a miserable life all because he believed in the situation presented before Him rather than the Lord’s promises. When he was eventually reunited with Joseph… Jacob said to Joseph, “I never thought I would see your face again, but now God has let me see your children, too!” (Genesis 48:11 NLT).

Hmmm… IF ONLY WE JUST TRUST GOD…

I read something interesting that Jacob told Joseph as he blessed Joseph’s sons. He said… THE GOD WHO HAS BEEN MY SHEPHERD [leading and caring for me] all my life to this day… bless the boys; (Genesis 48:15-16 AMP).

Really, Jacob? THE GOD WHO HAS BEEN MY SHEPHERD? Psalm 23 comes to mind… The Lord is my shepherd… He leads me… He guides me… Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:1-4 NIV).

So, Jacob, if the Lord is really your Shepherd,‎ why not just trust His leading… His comfort? Because even when He takes you through the darkest valley, it still leads to where He’s taking you.

Beloved, many of us can recite Psalm 23 but let’s not be like Jacob living it till the last minute to find peace. The Lord is either your Shepherd or He isn’t. If He is, then TRUST THE PATH HE LEADS YOU THROUGH and find peace and rest for your soul.

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin… (Zechariah 4.10 NLT)

Beloved, do you know that the very thing that we tend to despise and get so frustrated about is the very thing that the Lord rejoices to see? He loves to see our attitude and how we appreciate what He’s started in our lives but we are always in such a hurry and at times we’ve got to stop and think… is this about God or is it about me? If it’s about God then, why don’t we move at His pace? Surely, the Lord knows we would face obstacles but He says don’t worry about that… “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it… ‎(Zechariah 4.9 NLT)‎

So why does the Lord rejoice over our small beginnings? That’s where a solid foundation that would sustain us is built. That’s when He instils His godly values in us that’s if we give Him the chance to do so‎. At every step of the ways, I’ve come to realise that the Lord’s process is a much-needed process and I now tend to agree with Him that yes… this area and this area and that area needs to be worked on so please don’t give it to me yet because I agree that I’m not ready or fully mature to handle it.

Beloved, you have got to go through the maturing stage and when you’ve been faithful with little that’s when you would hear the Lord say… ‎” ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’‎ (Mathew 25:23 NLT)

The Lord isn’t against your enlargement. He definitely…. bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless (Psalms 84:11 NIV). ‎However, this is the problem… when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God… never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful… (Deuteronomy 8.12-18 NLT).

Beloved, this is the reason why He sometimes takes us through a process of breaking so we aren’t carried away and so we become humble enough to know that if not for You Lord, I would be nothing.

Are you getting frustrated about your small beginnings? Perhaps you need to start to look at it from the Lord’s point of view and stop depriving Him of what He rejoices over… He has made everything beautiful in its time (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV).

FOR GOD IS NOT UNJUST. He will not forget how hard you have worked for Him and how you have shown your love to Him by caring for other believers, as you still do (Hebrews 6: 10 NLT).

Beloved, only yesterday, someone told me that they won a HUGE sum of money and I was almost tempted to say, Lord, WHAT ABOUT ME? I’ve been labouring and praying and fasting for a sudden supernatural supply. However, I remembered the message of yesterday titled ‘WHAT ABOUT ME?’ and couldn’t help but think God You are so funny. You sure prepared me for this one.

Beloved, have you ever felt God was unfair? You’ve been waiting on His promises. You’ve been faithful and have done everything He asked you to do but nothing and it just seems like He bypasses you. So, now you are like… well… whatever… Your heart has become sick (Proverbs 13:12). Is that you? Please don’t let your spirit be down. Keep doing what you know to do. God’s promise still stands. Our feature text lets us know GOD IS NOT UNJUST. The Chapter goes on to talk about God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in His own name, saying: “I will certainly bless you….” (Hebrews 6: 13-14 NLT)

Can you imagine God saying: “I swear by My Almighty self that…”?

Beloved, God’s word is enough to assure us that He will fulfil His promises and we are meant to take Him by His word. But then, He takes it a step further… God also bound Himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be PERFECTLY SURE THAT HE WOULD NEVER CHANGE HIS MIND. So God has given both HIS PROMISE AND HIS OATH. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a STRONG AND TRUSTWORTHY ANCHOR for our souls… (Hebrews 6:17-19 NLT)

Isn’t that reassuring? However, I must stress that our continued OBEDIENCE and SACRIFICE is important. God swore to Abraham after Abraham obeyed His command to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. We must be willing to and keep doing what God tells us to do regardless of how hard it may seem. The other thing is to be PATIENT… Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised (Hebrews 6:15).

Beloved, an anchor is a strong device that is used to connect a boat to the bed of a body of water to prevent it from drifting or moving due to wind or current. This is to say that you should hang on firmly to what God has promised. He will fulfil it… For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are [all answered] “Yes.” So through Him we say our “Amen” to the glory of God (2 Corinthians 1:20 AMP). Can I hear an amen?

And behold, a woman who was a Canaanite from that district came out and, with a [loud, troublesomely urgent] cry, begged, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is miserably and distressingly and cruelly possessed by a demon! BUT HE DID NOT ANSWER HER A WORD. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, send her away, for she is crying out after us (Matthew 15:22-23 AMPC).

Beloved, have you ever been in a situation where you desperately need the Lord’s intervention and it seems like He is giving you the silent treatment? Does it mean He doesn’t want you to bother Him and hopes that somehow you would eventually get the memo? I don’t think so, but what do you do when you cry out to Jesus and get no response? This woman was in a desperate situation and begged Jesus to help but He ignored her. But did she give up? No! She pumped up the volume until she became a nuisance to His disciples.

That’s the kind of prayer that would make people not want to sit next to you in church because they know you would disturb their comfort. A pastor once said she was in her office one day and disturbed from the noise coming from a lady outside her door, had to ask someone to see if she was alright. She was alright. Just desperately in need of an intervention. This was the Canaanite woman’s case. But that still didn’t do it. Jesus basically said that as an outsider, she wasn’t on His agenda. However, she still didn’t give up. What did she do?… Then she came and WORSHIPED HIM, saying, “Lord, help me!” (Matthew 15:25 NKJV)

Beloved, she WORSHIPED HIM. When you’ve done everything you know to do. Don’t give up. Just WORSHIP HIM. I’ve been told that’s one of the greatest gifts and weapons I’ve got. I really didn’t understand it then but it took the silent years of the Lord to bring the worshipper out of me.

Next, Jesus taught a lesson in humility. Jesus said… “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” (Matthew 15:26 NKJV). A proud person would say “please don’t insult me because I’m begging you for help”. But not this woman. She knew Jesus was her only solution so she humbled herself and she continued to appeal to his mercy and grace (unmerited favour)… And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! LET IT BE TO YOU AS YOU DESIRE.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour (Matthew 15:27-28 NKJV).

Beloved, what did it. WORSHIP… HUMILITY… APPEALING TO HIS GRACE AND MERCY… kept her faith going and brought about her desire. Why not try it and see where it lands you instead of getting frustrated or giving up.

07. July 2017 · Comments Off on DON’T FAIL UNDER PRESSURE · Categories: Decision making, Jesus Christ, Patience, Perseverance, Trusting God

If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small (Proverbs 24:10 NLT).

Beloved, our feature text is one of those texts that challengeus and when you start to read stories like that of Apostle Paul, you are bound to ask yourself; what have I really been through? There are many people that are considering quitting just because of the trials they’ve had to face, however, can you compare what you’ve been through to that of Apostle Paul?

Apostle Paul said …I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again. Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea. I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm. Then, besides all this, I have the daily burden of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak without my feeling that weakness? Who is led astray, and I do not burn with anger? (2 Corinthians 11:23-29 NLT).

Beloved, with all these trials, we aren’t told that it ever came across the mind of Apostle Paul to quit and say “Lord’ I’ve had enough”. Rather, he kept pushing through and according to one of my Bible notes… “Sincerity is a difficult thing to judge. THE COMMITMENT THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO A CAUSE CAN ONLY BE DETERMINED OVER TIME. One test might be: do they persevere through hardships and challenges? In this regard, Paul is without equal. If the cause of Jesus were a fleeting interest or a halfhearted pursuit, then he would have given up after his first beating. But Paul’s compassion for those who did not know the beauty of the gospel was stubborn and unyielding. This persecutor-turned-emissary always had his critics. But who could call him insincere?”

Beloved, Apostle Paul endured till the end and his final testimony was… I have fought the good fight, I have stayed on course and finished the race, and through it all, I HAVE KEPT BELIEVING. I look forward to what’s in store for me: a crown of righteousness that the Lord—the always right and just judge—will give me that day (but it is not only for me, but for all those who love and long for His appearing) (2 Timothy 4:7-8 Voice).

I HAVE KEPT BELIEVING…

Beloved, what have you gone through that might make you want to give up? And then, give up to do what?

What then shall we say to [all] this? If God is for us, who [can be] against us? [Who can be our foe, if God is on our side?]… Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us (Romans 8:31, 37 AMPC).

Beloved, I remember the time armed robbers attacked our family home in Africa many years ago, and out of fear, my nephew who was only a child at the time ran and hid himself in the kitchen. However, the armed robbers soon made their way into the kitchen but before they could even locate where he was hiding (not that they were even looking for him), fearing that he would be in worse trouble if they found him first, he cried out… “SEE ME HERE”. ‎As if to say, if I surrender myself, my punishment won’t be as bad.

SEE ME HERE…

Unfortunately, that’s the attitude many Christians have adopted. When the enemy comes LIKE a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8), out of fear… we say ‘SEE ME HERE’. However, we forget that the text says ‘like a roaring lion’ and not that he is a ‘roaring lion’. We also tend to forget that we… have overcome… because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4 NKJV).

King David said… He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [WHOSE POWER NO FOE CAN WITHSTAND] (Psalm 91:1 AMPC). However, many times, we choose to come out of our hiding place and say “SEE ME HERE”.

The word of God tells us… No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it (1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV).

The Lord would always make a way out of every temptation but we are too quick to give in and say “SEE ME HERE”. As a result, we are quick to give in to temptation… sin… frustration… fear and every weak emotion you can think of.

Beloved, this is not the time to give in. Rather, you are to… be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil (Ephesians 6:10-11 NLT).

You may be in a battle right now but remember that you are fighting from a place of victory. The battle has already been won. This current fight is a fight for your faith so don’t you dare give in. Remain under the shelter of the Lord Almighty… then after the battle you will still be standing firm (Ephesians 6:13 NLT).

Then he said, “Take the arrows”; so he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground”; so he struck three times, and stopped. And the man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it! But now you will strike Syria only three times.” (II Kings 13:18‭-‬19 NKJV)

Beloved, I am currently reading a book by Apostle John Eckhardt on Fasting for Breakthrough and Deliverance where he refers to our feature text. He says “Elisha told Joash that he must strike against Syria over and over again until they had been destroyed. Then Elisha told him to take a bow and arrows and strike it on the ground. He didn’t tell him how many times. Joash hit it on the ground three times and stopped. The prophet was very angry because it meant Joash would only defeat the Syrians three times. Three times was not enough to destroy the Syrians as Elisha had prophesied. Perhaps Elisha could have told him how many times to strike the arrows on the ground. But sometimes what is in a person comes out in their actions. Joash didn’t have enough hatred and anger for the enemy to strike the ground beyond the third time-or until the arrow broke!”

Beloved, this left me thinking? How much do you hate the devil? How much do you want to see yourself delivered in whatever area?

I started thinking of the time Jesus’ disciples could not cast out a demon from a little boy and Jesus had to come to their rescue. Later… His disciples asked Him privately, why could not we drive it out? And He replied to them, THIS KIND cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting (Mark 9:28-29 AMPC).

So, if Jesus says…. this kind can only go away through prayer and fasting, do you love your food more than you love your freedom?

Apostle John Eckhardt went on to say “when you are dealing with the enemy, you need to give him more than just a courtesy tap. You need to really want to win. You have to hate what you are fighting so much that you beat it until the arrows break. You must hate lust, poverty, fear, rejection, or whatever it is until you smash it. It’s not just one, two, three, and then look at the prophet and ask, “Did I do good?” Strike it until it is destroyed”.

Hmmm… it’s not just fasting till 12 noon and then say, “did I do good?” It’s not just praying for 30 minutes to one hour and then say, “did I do good?” No, you are to keep praying and fasting or doing whatever it takes until something happens.

Beloved, how desperate are you? How much do you hate that situation you are in? Have you got that much holy anger in you that you want to keep striking until that situation is completely destroyed?

SELAH!

And Adam knew Eve as his wife, and she became pregnant and bore Cain; and she said, I have gotten and gained a man WITH THE HELP OF THE LORD. And [next] she gave birth to his brother Abel… (Genesis 4:1-2 AMPC).

Beloved, Happy mother’s day to all you wonderful mothers and mothers to be out there. I have great news for you… NOTHING CAN STOP YOU! I was just reflecting on all the agony Eve had to go through. From her very first appearance on the scene of this earth, the devil was after her. Yes, she fell. Yes her actions had consequences but no matter how she struggled… No matter what life brought her way, she PREVAILED. She had to go through hard labour but WITH THE HELP OF THE LORD… she PREVAILED…

Because of the enmity between the offspring of satan and her offspring (Genesis 3:15), there was war in her household and even after she lost both sons, her story did not end there, she… again became pregnant, and she bore a son and called his name Seth. For God, she said, has appointed for me another child…(Genesis 4:25 AMPC)… WITH THE HELP OF THE LORD… she PREVAILED…

Beloved, since that time, women struggled with all sorts of issues. Barrenness was top on the list but when the world thought it was all over for Sarah, Rachael, Rebecca, Hannah, Elizabeth and the like, the Lord changed their stories… WITH THE HELP OF THE LORD… they PREVAILED…

And then the angel of the Lord appeared to one very special woman… And he came to her and said, Hail, O favored one [endued with grace]! The Lord is with you! Blessed (favored of God) are you before all other women!…And the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace (free, spontaneous, absolute favor and loving-kindness) with God. And listen! You will become pregnant and will give birth to a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus (Luke 1:28-31 AMPC).

The enemy fought that Son… He was crucified. Mary probably thought she had lost Him forever but He resurrected… He ascended in to Heaven and… On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place…. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them (Acts 2:1,3 NLT). That was the Holy Spirit coming to dwell inside of them. Mary, the mother of Jesus was there (Acts 1:14). She felt her Son inside her once again… She was a favored one… WITH THE HELP OF THE LORD… she PREVAILED…

Beloved, such would be your case… you would keep on PREVAILING. On this special mother’s day, you blessed woman, favored of God, may you receive a special visitation from the Lord. May you receive gifts that you know… THIS CAN ONLY BE GOD.
