Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV)

Beloved, I remember once when I was on the plane travelling. I hadn’t slept the night before so was hoping to catch a nap once on board but had to struggle to stay awake just so I wouldn’t miss the free meal served on the flight. However, to my disappointment, when the meal finally arrived, though it looked good, however, because I had a cold, my taste buds were gone. I couldn’t taste a thing. I did everything to try and clear my noise but to no avail. As for the food, I tried to add salt but still no taste. My blocked senses prevented me from enjoying my food. It got to the point where I had to say; “what’s the point?” I’m getting no pleasure whatsoever from eating this meal. I’m just wasting calories that could be used on something else. I was only eating and imagining how the food tasted based on my past knowledge of how it should taste.

As usual, the Lord started to minister to me. He started making me see that that’s how sin should feel to a born-again believer with a regenerated spirit. Though it may look attractive and seems like it should feel good to the flesh but that’s the old self trying to inform your mind. However, that old self is dead so if peradventure you find yourself falling into sin, it shouldn’t give you any pleasure. You have to get to the point where you say; “what’s the point?” I’m really getting no pleasure out of this.

Beloved, I once heard that when a pig falls into mud, it says; yes, this is home. It gets comfortable and it rolls and rolls in it. But it’s not the same with a sheep. They fail in the mud and immediately cry out for help. That should be the condition of every Spirit-filled believer that has allowed the Holy Spirit to come and dwell in them so He can begin the work of transforming us into the image of Christ. It’s… [Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight (Philippians 2:13 AMPC).

I’ve previously shared of how we tend to interpret the following verse wrongly. When the Lord says … Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4 NKJV),… we think it means He would give us all those things we’ve been longing for. However, what the text is really saying is that He would plant desires in your heart that you start to long for.

Beloved, are you still deriving pleasures from old things that should have passed away? Or are you allowing the Lord to be at work in you to give you new desires?

…stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run… the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1 AMP)

Beloved, during my flight to Israel, a few minutes after our plane started moving down the runway, an announcement was made that we had to go back because there were some issues with someone’s luggage which had to be taken off the plane before we could take off. What this meant was that we were slightly delayed. Instead of taking off, we had to go back to the beginning and thinking about it now, I can’t help but think about what someone said only a few days before our trip. They said; there’s a difference between baggage and luggage.

That made me think. It also made me search for the definition of both terms and here’s what I found. A luggage is defined as suitcases and bags containing personal belongings packed for traveling and while this is often used interchangeably with the term ‘baggage’, however, one definition of baggage says its past experiences or long-held attitudes perceived as burdensome encumbrances. Another definition says it’s the beliefs and feelings that influence how you think and behave. For example, we all carry a lot of emotional baggage around with us.

Beloved, for my trip, I ensured I travelled light because I didn’t want to be weighed down by too much load which helped a lot with my movement but the other thing I noticed as I embarked on this short study was that most airlines who make allowance for excesses we carry on board actually refer to it as ‘excess baggage’ and not ‘excess luggage’. In fact, when you type ‘excess’ in google, google suggests ‘excess baggage’. I deliberately ignored this suggestion and typed ‘excess luggage’ but then it asked; “Did you mean: excess baggage” which I found interesting.

So, what am I trying to say? If we go by the definition of what baggage is, we find that we all carry a lot of baggage around with us which tends to slow us down or delay our journey, but our feature text urges us to strip off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, so we can run the race that is set before us.

Beloved, Sunday was my birthday and as I was reflecting on the new year ahead of me, one of the things I said to myself was that this was a year of decisions and I’m not alone. Many of us need to make certain decisions.

As you move forward in your journey, plan to travel light. It’s time to get rid of those relationships that have become excess luggage and are preventing you from taking off. Like King Saul, it’s time to get rid of those attitudes and limiting mindsets that have held you down. The Bible tells us that when it was time to appoint Saul as king… they looked for him, he had disappeared! So they asked the Lord, “Where is he?” and the Lord replied, “He is hiding among the baggage.” (1 Samuel 10:21-22 NLT)

Beloved, are you hiding among the baggage? Are they slowing you down? Isn’t it time to address every baggage in your life?

Until the time that his word [of prophecy regarding his brothers] came true, the word of the Lord tested and refined him (Psalm 105:19 AMP)

Beloved, we all have loads of dreams, promises, and prophecies from the Lord but I’ve found out that while these promises are more important to us, God is more interested in what happens to us while we wait for their fulfilment and that’s the development of one’s character and our transformation into the image of Christ.

The New Living Translation of our feature text says… Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, THE LORD TESTED JOSEPH’S CHARACTER.

Beloved, we know the story of Joseph. He may have thought that God had forgotten about him after all the years that past between the time he had his dream and its fulfillment but every step of the way, the Lord was testing his character. Somehow, he found himself as a slave in Potiphar’s house but because… “Joseph was a strikingly handsome man. As time went on, his master’s wife became infatuated with Joseph and one day said, “Sleep with me.” He wouldn’t do it. He said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master doesn’t give a second thought to anything that goes on here—he’s put me in charge of everything he owns. He treats me as an equal. The only thing he hasn’t turned over to me is you. You’re his wife, after all! How could I violate his trust and sin against God?” She pestered him day after day after day, BUT HE STOOD HIS GROUND. HE REFUSED TO GO TO BED WITH HER” (Genesis 39:6-10 MSG).

Who knows; satan may have appeared before God while Joseph was in Potiphar’s house. He must have said; “Your boy is doing great because he hasn’t faced real temptation. Allow me to tempt him with something great. Let’s see how he would handle the pressure from Potiphar’s wife. Let’s see if he won’t fall for the temptation” and God must have said, “go ahead and give it your best shot” and so the testing began but Joseph used tests like this to develop integrity and fine character. Satan may have had a different plan in mind, but God must have said “let me allow it to see if far away from home, in a place where nobody knows him, where he thinks he is free to do whatever he wants, whether he would still maintain a good character” and Joseph passed the test. He was not about to sin against God.

Beloved, what if Joseph did not develop such character? When he eventually became governor over all of Egypt, don’t you think the women would have been in trouble? What test of character is God putting you through? How is it going?

I just got back from Israel and one thing that was obvious was that the Lord took us all there to test our character; some in humility, patience, long-suffering, integrity, obedience to what He said we should or should not do and all I could say was Lord, give me the grace to see me through.

Beloved, what about you?

…let us cleanse ourselves from everything that CONTAMINATES BODY AND SPIRIT, completing holiness [living a consecrated life—a life set apart for God’s purpose] in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1 AMP).

Beloved, the New King James Version of our feature text says… LET US CLEANSE OURSELVES FROM ALL FILTHINESS OF THE FLESH AND SPIRIT… However, most times, we tend to focus on the flesh but what about the spirit?

Jesus taught us a few things about this and I would love for us to explore this. Jesus said… “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘YOU MUST NOT MURDER. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell (Matthew 5:21-23 NLT).

Beloved, YOU MUST NOT MURDER is a requirement of the law but Jesus is saying here that it’s not enough to avoid murder; we must also avoid prolonged anger and hatred. Jesus was giving a fuller understanding of why God made that law in the first place. The law says you must not murder but Jesus taught that we should not even become angry enough because that’s how the devil plants a seed, committing murder in our heart. The Pharisees read the law and felt that they had obeyed it. Yet, they were angry enough with Jesus that they soon plotted His death.

Unfortunately, we miss the intent of God’s Word when we read His rules for living without trying to understand why He made them. Have you closed your heart to his intent?

Here’s another example. Jesus said… “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘YOU MUST NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:27-28 NLT).

What Jesus is saying here is that it’s not enough to avoid adultery; we must also keep our hearts from lusting and while FILTHINESS OF THE FLESH is very easy to detect, one can carry FILTHINESS OF THE SPIRIT for a long time undetected.

What do I mean? The same person that says I love you with Jesus’ love can at the same time be cursing you out in their heart because they haven’t forgiven you for something you may not even be aware of. How can you detect that?

Beloved, with God, it is a matter of the heart. Remember… the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV) and everyone will give an account one day. So, HOW CLEAN IS YOUR SPIRIT?

…that I may know Him [experientially, becoming more thoroughly acquainted with Him, understanding the remarkable wonders of His Person more completely] and [in that same way experience] the power of His resurrection [which overflows and is active in believers], and [that I may share] the fellowship of His sufferings, by being continually conformed [inwardly into His likeness even] to His death [dying as He did]; so that I may attain to the resurrection [that will raise me] from the dead (Philippians 3:10-11 AMP)

Beloved, in our feature text, Apostle Paul is saying he wants to experientially know Christ and experience the power of His resurrection meaning one may have to experience some sort of death to be RAISED.

Now, the Bible introduces us to Lazarus who experienced Christ’ resurrecting power. Jesus was close to Lazarus’ family but when He got the message that Lazarus was sick, He intentionally delayed coming to their rescue. He was waiting for Lazarus to die so that He could demonstrate His resurrection power.

Beloved, how does this apply to you? Are you waiting for Jesus to HEAL things in your life while His plan is for you to experience a RESURRECTION? Jesus had his eye on Lazarus’s situation the whole time, but He was waiting for him to die first before He made a move (John 11:7).

Maybe you are asking the Lord to heal a relationship, but Jesus is waiting for your pride and temper to die so that the relationship can be resurrected. Maybe you have been saying “Lord, use me for Your mighty work” but He is waiting for your selfish ambition to die so that He can resurrect His purpose in your life. You say; “Lord, I want to get married or I want a happy home to come back to” but He’s waiting for that lifestyle of sexual immorality to die first.

Beloved, the Bible says… if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; OLD THINGS HAVE PASSED AWAY… Now, when someone dies, we say they have PASSED AWAY (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV). Apostle Paul used to be known as Saul but when he became born again, Saul passed away and Paul was resurrected.

So, how much of that old man has PASSED AWAY? Is BEFORE and AFTER still the same? Would people give up if they tried to play the ‘spot the difference’ puzzle on you? What needs to die so that you can experience the mighty power that raised Jesus from the dead?

Beloved, the other thing is that yesterday, I had the opportunity of visiting the tomb of Lazarus and as I walked down the stairs and back up again, I began to think about the fact that it must have taken a little while for Lazarus to have walked up these stairs. This means that the fact that you could be experiencing a delay in a certain aspect of your life does not mean that Jesus hasn’t spoken life to that situation. The delay also serves a purpose; producing humility, patience, endurance – which is you being continually conformed inwardly into His likeness.

Shalom!

David and his men immediately set out for Jerusalem to take on the Jebusites, who lived in that country. But they said, “You might as well go home! Even the blind and the lame could keep you out. You can’t get in here!” THEY HAD CONVINCED THEMSELVES THAT DAVID COULDN’T BREAK THROUGH. BUT DAVID WENT RIGHT AHEAD and captured the fortress of Zion, known ever since as the City of David (2 Samuel 5:6-7 MSG).

Beloved, you probably know by now that the enemy has vowed to do all he can to prevent you from being who God has called you to be so he would use all sorts of tactics to stop you. However, it will not work as far as you press on in Christ. In our feature text, we read about David who matched on and took what was his despite the intimidation from his enemies. The New King James Version says… NEVERTHELESS DAVID TOOK THE STRONGHOLD OF ZION… but the question is; what did he have to get rid of? It was … the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul (2 Samuel 5:8 NKJV).

Beloved, Jerusalem became the centre of Israel’s spiritual life and David had to get rid of the lame and blind standing in his way. So, for you today, is there anything that has spiritually blinded or paralysed you that you need to overcome? Satan builds MENTAL STRONGHOLDS which like I have shared before is defined as a mind-set impregnated with hopelessness that causes us to accept as unchangeable, situations that we know are contrary to the will of God. For example, because of reoccurring situations, past experiences, family background etc, we develop mind-sets that make us think… I’m hopeless, I’m cursed, I’m a failure… This presents a false view of God’s reality for your life.

Our feature text says… Even the blind and the lame could keep you out…

Beloved, if your mind is clouded by satan’s smoke screen, it will prevent you from seeing things the way God desires you to see them and it could keep you from your breakthrough. So, you must pull those strongholds down and you know that… we use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NLT).

Beloved, you are to use the truth in God’s word as a weapon to drive out these strongholds. You are not a failure, God always leads us into triumph (2 Corinthians 2:14). You are not hopeless… Christ in you is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). And you are not cursed because Christ redeemed you from the curse of the Law (Galatians 3:13-14). Demolishing strongholds is the greatest breakthrough you can ever have. So, as you decide to be strengthened by God’s truth, I pray that you take hold of everything the Lord has for you.

Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you THINK. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect (Romans 12:2 NLT).

Beloved, what our feature text highlights is that we need a paradigm shift in the way we think. We are not of this world so we shouldn’t think like the world (John 17:16). The Message translation says… “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out…

There are some laid out facts that the patterns and traditions of this world has taught us and then there’s the TRUTH. The world says you’ve got to be of a certain age to have children, then there’s the truth that Sarah was past childbearing age when she conceived and the Lord wants us to distinguish FACTS from His TRUTH… For nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).

Unfortunately, we are limited by how we think (Proverbs 23:7) but to receive the great things God has for us, we must know how He thinks for He says… “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” … “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT).

Beloved, please know that it is God that makes things happen so trust in the Lord and just relax (Proverbs 3:5-6). We don’t have to figure things out first. Just believe that when the time comes, Jesus will show you which fish’s mouth to get the money from (Matthew 17:27). When we define how we think God should work, we tend to focus all our effort in that direction but… He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us’. (Ephesians 3:20). WHAT POWER ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? …This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead…’ (Ephesians 1:19-20 NLT) and if you truly belong to Christ, you have the same power in you (Romans 8:11).

We must realise that the God of the Bible is the same God we’re talking about today (Malachi 3:6) but we are imprisoned by the limits we’ve set for ourselves through how the world says we should think or how our past experiences or family history has defined us.

Beloved, it’s time to release our thinking from jail. As far as we are confined to thinking within the boundaries of how this world works, we restrict God to work within those boundaries but when we remove the boundaries, we allow God to do what only He can do.

TAKE OFF THE LIMITS of age, strength, ability, education, finance… and see what God can do.

…be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you] (Romans 12:2 AMP).

Beloved, there are times when the Lord has to really do some deep surgery in us in order to help us let go of some negative mind-sets so that we go from someone who thinks only negative things happen to them to someone who sees themselves as highly favoured by God.

I’m thinking of Hannah who at one time must have thought that she wasn’t favoured because she was barren but even her name ‘Hannah’ in Hebrew means ‘Favor; grace’. Hannah was a favoured woman. The Lord was just waiting for her to get in alignment with Him through positioning and prayer.

Beloved, when you’ve been through a lot of negative, repeated cycles, there’s the tendency to think that this time is just going to be like the last time. You start to replay it all in your head. You say “I know exactly how this is going to end” and how do you know so? It’s because it’s happened before. However, that’s your past prophesying to your future and the sad thing is that… the tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences (Proverbs 18:21 NLT).

In order to find joy, peace, love and the abundant life that the Lord has for you, you have to be vulnerable enough to breakdown your walls and put yourself out there and most importantly, you would definitely have to trust in the faithfulness of the Lord big time.

The Bible says… “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert (Isaiah 43:18-19 NKJV). The New Living Translation says… For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?

Beloved, the Lord always wants to do something new in our lives. However, the problems with many of us is that we talk ourselves out of the new thing because we don’t want to let go of the old. But Apostle Paul said in order to move forward… one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14 NKJV).

Beloved, your past does not get to prophesy into your future… let it go… Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV).

And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”‎ ‎And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Mathew 14:28-31 NKJV)

Beloved, according to the Oxford Dictionary,” transition is the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another”. This was the position Peter found himself when He obeyed Jesus’ command to step out of the boat and walk on water. He had already stepped out and there was no way He could go back. He had taken the initial step to come out from where he was. He had resigned from his job and couldn’t go back. He had invested all his money in this project because He took a step of faith. However, uncertainty about the future started to torment him. What have I done? What if things don’t work out as expected?

Beloved, this is like when you thrust yourself into something but then, reality starts to set in and you start to think “what am I doing?” And then, the first sign of any kind of opposition causes you to seriously panic. However, if you don’t face opposition, then it’s probably not the Lord that called or sent you.

The key is that you must retain the same courage that kicked in at the beginning… You must retain the same boldness that kicked in at the beginning… You must retain the same faith that kicked in at the beginning. The key is stability. You should not be… blown about and tossed by the wind. For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways [in everything he thinks, feels, or decides] (James 1:6-8 AMP).

Beloved, get rid of the doubt. That’s what caused Peter to start to drown. Get rid of the fear. The Bible says… For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of A SOUND MIND (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

A SOUND MIND… That’s what you need. The Amplified Bible Translation says… sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind…]

Beloved, you are to always remain calm… Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which REASSURES the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours] (Philippians 4:6-7 AMP).

Fix your eyes on Jesus who called you out of the boat. He is the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2)

For God shows no partiality [undue favor or unfairness; with Him one man is not different from another] (Romans 2:11 AMPC).

Beloved, I like that the Lord is no respecter of persons. Everyone, regardless of your background, education, race, past, whatever can approach Him. Our feature text says He doesn’t discriminate. He sees everything that goes on in the earth. He sees everyone and knows us personally by name.

I’m thinking of a man called Zacchaeus, a very rich tax collector, but there comes a time when everything you’ve got no longer has the ability to satisfy you; a typical case of been there… done it… but I’m now at the point where I believe there’s more to life.

I also like that the Lord somehow makes it impossible for us to reach perfection without him so I believe your shortcomings are there for a purpose. No matter how much money Zacchaeus had, it could not buy him height. The Bible says he was a short man and maybe he had been searching for things to fill that gap. I’m sure people made fun of him and he may have thought perhaps if he had all the money, he would fit in but it didn’t work. He was still short so at some point he decided that the height he couldn’t achieve physically, he had to achieve spiritually. He decided to seek God and we know that God… IS A REWARDER OF THOSE WHO DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM (Hebrews 11:6 NLT).

The Message translation says… He cares enough to respond to those who seek Him. Zacchaeus was desperate; he didn’t care what others thought. He sought after Jesus. He made up his mind that Jesus was not going to pass by without noticing him… So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, HE LOOKED UP AT ZACCHAEUS AND CALLED HIM BY NAME. “Zacchaeus!” He said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” (Luke 19:4-5 NLT)

Beloved, Jesus always knows where to look. He can always tell from amongst the crowd that one person that is sincerely looking for Him and I like that He would stop everything else to attend to you. He was passing by but He decided to drop by in Zacchaeus house. Why? Only because Zacchaeus decided to climb higher.

You may think you have shortcomings but regardless of what they are, Jesus can fill the gap and as far as you decide that enough is enough; I want to let go of everything that I’ve been using to disguise my shortcomings and just seek after Him… I want to position myself where He can find me… He would reward your sincere effort. Be encouraged to go higher in your walk with the Lord regardless of how low you think you are right now.
