And He said to them, “Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19 AMP)

Beloved, our feature text refers to the time Jesus was calling His first disciples to come follow Him and I’ve been reflecting on Peter whom He called and instantly changed His name from Simon to Peter. We are told that… Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas (which is translated Peter).” (John 1:42 AMP)

Jesus changed Simons name to Peter, however, towards the end of Jesus’ ministry on earth, we hear Him refer to Peter as Simon. Jesus said… “SIMON, SIMON, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, SIMON, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, STRENGTHEN YOUR BROTHERS.” (Luke 22:31-32 NLT)

Okay! I bet Peter must have been confused. “Am I Peter or am I Simon?” Like I said, When Jesus first called Simon, He changed his name to Peter which means ‘ROCK’. But here, Jesus calls him ‘SIMON’ as if to say… “I’m not referring to Peter the ‘ROCK’. I’m referring to the weak side of you. On your way to becoming Peter, satan would attack SIMON. He would try everything to stop SIMON from becoming Peter.

The Amplified Bible says… Satan has asked excessively that [all of] you be given up to him [out of the power and keeping of God]…

The question here is why would satan be so desperate if he’s not afraid of the effect you would have against his kingdom?

The interesting thing is that Jesus didn’t plan to stop satan. Rather, He said; “that’s ok! I’m behind you praying for you… I can stop satan if I want to but you need the experience so that you can… STRENGTHEN YOUR BROTHERS”.

This should be the end result of every trial… You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, THE SAVING OF MANY LIVES (Genesis 50:20 NIV).

Beloved, unfortunately, many of us are ignorant of the fact that satan had and still has plans to sift us like wheat but every trial that comes your way is meant to grow you for your purpose. If you are reading this today, please understand that you have a purpose the Lord is preparing you for. When Jesus called Peter, He said… “Follow Me, and I will MAKE YOU fishers of men”. What Jesus did not mention here was how He planned to MAKE Peter ‘a fisher of men’.

Beloved, please know that that situation which you’re thinking is the breaking of you is actually the MAKING of you. Jesus is praying for you and so am I.

Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:23-24 AMPC).

Beloved, King David was by no means a perfect man but one thing I’ve learnt about David is that he got the revelation that God, to whom it matters most, is always looking deep into the heart of man. With God, IT IS A MATTER OF THE HEART… Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord WEIGHS AND TRIES THE HEARTS (Proverbs 21:2 AMP). I believe that’s why you would always hear David say things like… Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart (Psalm 26:2 NLT).

As Christians, this is so important. God already knows we are not perfect that’s why we have the help of the Holy Spirit. God looked down from His throne at all the people on the earth and said, “that’s the man I’m looking for” …HE RAISED UP DAVID to be their king; of him He bore witness and said, I have found David son of Jesse A MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART, WHO WILL DO ALL MY WILL AND CARRY OUT MY PROGRAM FULLY (Acts 13:22 AMP).

Beloved, do you think that when God looked down at David and said “this is a man after My own heart”, God did not know David was going to commit adultery, kill the husband and take his wife? But David always presented his heart before God. God said David… WILL DO ALL MY WILL AND CARRY OUT MY PROGRAM FULLY… How did David achieve this? …He knew all sorts of things can get in the way…self-ambition; wrong motives etc. so all day long he cried out… SHOW ME HOW YOU WORK, God; SCHOOL ME IN YOUR WAYS. Take me by the hand; Lead me down the path of truth. YOU ARE MY SAVIOR, AREN’T YOU? (Psalm 25:4-5 MSG)

God ‘RAISED UP DAVID’ meaning ‘TO TRAIN’ and David was willing to learn. He must have said “You called me into this thing; I did not call myself so SHOW ME HOW… This is a desperate cry for help from someone that knows that if you leave me to it, I’ll mess it all up. Even with good intentions, you can still miss it because… There is A WAY WHICH SEEMS RIGHT TO A MAN AND APPEARS STRAIGHT BEFORE HIM, but at the end of it is the way of death (Proverbs 14:12 AMPC). This means that as far as you are concerned, you may think you are doing the right thing but the end is disaster.

Beloved, this is a call to deal with matters of our heart. Personally, I’m by no means perfect but one thing I do is always present my heart before God; all my wrong motives, malicious thoughts etc and say… Lord help me. It’s time to be transparent before God and give the Holy Spirit permission to take over.

And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I WOULD MOREOVER HAVE GIVEN UNTO THEE SUCH AND SUCH THINGS. Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? (2 Samuel 12:8-9 KJV)

I WOULD MOREOVER HAVE GIVEN UNTO THEE SUCH AND SUCH THINGS…

Beloved, on Sunday, I listened to a message where the preacher focused on this line and since then, I couldn’t shake it off. Our feature text is about David who had an adulterous affair with Uriah’s wife and then killed him to cover up his mess. However, the Lord was so disappointed in him; “I gave you everything a man could ever ask for and if that was not enough, all you should have done was say so and I would have given unto thee such and such things…”

So, what is ‘such and such things?’ The New Living Translation says… I would have given you much, much more. The Message Translation says… And if that hadn’t been enough, I’d have gladly thrown in much more.

Beloved, this tells me that the Lord doesn’t have a problem blessing you likesome of us religious people think. All He asks is that He has our hearts. The Bible says… For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this; therefore, from now on you will have wars.” (2 Chronicles 16:9 AMP)

So, the Lord did His search and He found David and… of him He testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart [conforming to My will and purposes], who will do all My will.’ (Acts 13:22 AMP)

However, we now hear the Lord say… Why have you treated the word of God with brazen contempt, doing this great evil? You murdered Uriah the Hittite, then took his wife as your wife. Worse, you killed him with an Ammonite sword! And now, because you treated God with such contempt and took Uriah the Hittite’s wife as your wife, killing and murder will continually plague your family (2 Samuel 12:8-9 MSG).

Beloved, this must have been very disappointing for the Lord and it sure spoke volumes to me to the point where I had to say… Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalm 139:23-24 NLT).

Beloved, the blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22 NLT). So, let’s submit our hearts to Him, cut out the evil, the wickedness, the greed, the covetousness, the competitiveness, the wrong motives, the disobedience, the idolatry etc. and go after Him wholeheartedly so we can find out what His such and such things are

…“Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.” (Revelation 4:1 NLT)

Beloved, there was a time Jesus told His disciples… Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20 NIV)

Jesus told them that it only took ‘small faith’ to move the mountain but my question is; what if you’ve got faith and the mountain still remains where it is? What if you’ve joined your faith with others and it has become massive faith and the mountains still says there’s no way I’m moving from this position? What if Jesus doesn’t want you to remove the mountain because there’s something He wants you to see on top of the mountain? Remember The Transfiguration… Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, AND LED THEM UP A HIGH MOUNTAIN TO BE ALONE. As the men watched, JESUS’ APPEARANCE WAS TRANSFORMED so that His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as light (Matthew 17:1-2 NLT).

Jesus led them up the mountain and there He was TRANSFORMED and they saw His glory (Luke 9:32). Also, on top of that mountain, once again, the Lord confirmed who Jesus was… a voice from the cloud said, “This is My dearly loved Son, who brings Me great joy. Listen to Him.” (Matthew 17:5 NLT)

Could this be why Jesus wants you to climb that mountain? Is there transformation taking place there? Does God want you to see His glory? Is God speaking and confirming things on top of the mountain? You will also find out that while Jesus was on earth, the top of the mountain was His favourite spot for prayer; a place where He connected with God… Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and He prayed to God all night (Luke 6:12 NLT).

Beloved, are you facing a mountain that refuses to shift? Some mountains we face have their uses. Could there be something up there the Lord wants you to see? And it’s not like you would remain there forever. What I like is that it was Jesus that led them up the mountain and you will also find that they all came back down from the mountain after their experience (Matthew 17:9). You too are no exception. Jesus is with you. Ask Him for the direction you need. Ask Him to hold your hand and trust that you will definitely come back down from that mountain after seeing what the Lord wants you to see.

And as he thus proceeded with his defense, Festus called out loudly, Paul, you are mad! Your great learning is driving you insane! But Paul replied, I am not mad, most noble Festus, but I am uttering the straight, sound truth. For the king understands about these things well enough, and [therefore] to him I speak with bold frankness and confidence. I am convinced that not one of these things has escaped his notice, FOR ALL THIS DID NOT TAKE PLACE IN A CORNER [in secret]. (Acts 26:24-26 AMPC)

Beloved, in Acts chapter 26, Apostle Paul gives a full account of his life before his encounter with Jesus Christ and he ends with this remarkable statement… FOR ALL THIS DID NOT TAKE PLACE IN A CORNER…

Don’t you think it’s the most beautiful thing when the Lord takes a life that Satan thought was definitely his; a life that no one could possibly see how any good can come of it; a life that was written off and transforms it in front of everybody to see? God is such an expert at such. He takes that life and says… “don’t write it off just yet. You wait until you see what I can do with it. Even the person in question is going to be so surprised at how I can transform their lives”.

Apostle Paul himself once argued with the Lord. He said…“After I returned to Jerusalem, I was praying in the Temple and fell into a trance. I saw a vision of Jesus saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem, for the people here won’t accept your testimony about me.’ “‘But Lord,’ I argued, ‘they certainly know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you. And I was in complete agreement when your witness Stephen was killed. I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned him.’ (Acts 22:17-20 NLT).

Paul must have said, “Can’t you see all the evil that I did? They know all these about me and they are bound to think that there’s no possible way I can change”.

Hmmm… Satan is such an expert at messing with your mind if you allow him. He has a way of making you replay your past life over and over again in your head so you see yourself as unworthy but… if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV)

Apostle Paul was a different person now and everybody could testify to that fact because… ALL THIS DID NOT TAKE PLACE IN A CORNER…

Beloved, is your journey, process, stripping… on display right now? Well, some have the privilege of hiding theirs while others don’t. However, like Apostle Paul, there would come a time that it would give such joy to present God’s handiwork to the world. Just wait and see what God does with your life.

Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham (Luke 19:8-9 NLT)

Beloved, our feature text reminds me of that point you get to in life where everything that you have looked on to hoping to give you fulfillment is no longer enough because you find that you are still empty or should I say you find that there’s still a void in your life. Who was Zacchaeus?… He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd (Luke 19:2-3 NLT)

He had all that wealth but he was short. His wealth could only take him to a certain level. He still could not stand out in the crowd. He had many shortcomings. He fell short of real peace. He fell short of real joy. We are told that… When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy (Luke 19:5-6 NLT).

Well, that’s the joy that comes with Jesus. Before then, he was lost hence the reason Jesus said… For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” (Luke 19:10 NLT).

Beloved, I like that Zacchaeus didn’t allow his pride to get in the way of him going after what he knew he desperately needed. With his so-called status in the community, can you imagine what it would have taken for him to climb up the tree while others were watching? Well, desperate times call for desperate measures and Zacchaeus knew he could allow this opportunity pass him by. He did what he had to do and he eventually found what he was truly looking for.

Beloved, God has… planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]… (Ecclesiastes 3:11 AMP). Unfortunately, when we don’t understand this desire for God, we keep looking to things – wealth, cars, houses, career, relationships etc. hoping that it would satisfy us but… nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God.

Are you at that place where everything you have is no longer enough? Are you currently feeling so empty? Have you got an unexplainable longing for more? Well, perhaps it’s time to address this eternal desire. The Lord says… Then [with a deep longing] you will seek Me and require Me [as a vital necessity] and [you will] find Me when you search for Me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:13 AMP).

05. April 2017 · Comments Off on THE UNDONE WORSHIPER · Categories: Change, Jesus Christ, Repentance, Worship

Prophet Isaiah said… In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphim… And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” (Isaiah 6:1-5 NIV)

Beloved, usually when I get down to worship, I feel the presence of the Lord so strongly that I can hardly contain myself. However, I expect to feel His presence like this when I’ve been very faithful. That is, when I’ve been regular in spending time before his Holy presence. But I don’t expect to feel His presence when I’ve been too busy and struggling to find time for Him. And so when He does show up at such times, I feel very guilty. Unusually, at such times, as I get down to business and I can immediately feel His presence so strongly, it really messes me up. I find myself saying “Lord, I really don’t deserve this. Why are You always so close and so quick to embrace me? It’s like You are just there waiting for me to come back”. It’s very humbling.

Well, in his book, ‘THE UNQUENCHABLE WORSHIPER: COMING BACK TO THE HEART OF WORSHIP’, Matt Redman whom I talked about yesterday titles this one… ‘the undone worshiper’. Referring to our feature text, he says “before the throne of God the prophet Isaiah becomes an undone worshiper… Isaiah is broken, stunned and shaken in the presence of God. But this brokenness is not a destructive thing; God is stripping him apart in order to put him back together as a stronger, purer worshiper.

What he is basically saying is that it’s not always every time that the presence of God leaves a gently and comforting feeling; you know those times when you are just in awe of Him. There are times when it leaves you broken. Matt says there was a time… “God’s presence invaded my heart in a new and powerful way. But it wasn’t one of those tender, reassuring times. All it did was make me want to repent. Rising to the surface of my heart came those little unspoken attitudes and thoughts which had passed unnoticed, and which I now saw had offended God”

Beloved, what Matt says makes perfect sense. There are times I feel the Lord’s strong presence but He comes to make me repent… to come back to THE HEART OF WORSHIP. Hopefully I’m not the only one. Like King David told the Lord… The sacrifice You desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God (Psalm 51:17 NLT).

Beloved, let this be our heart condition.

03. April 2017 · Comments Off on LEARNING TO BE HUMBLE · Categories: Change, God's Plan, Humility, Jesus Christ, Spiritual Growth

HE HUMBLED YOU, CAUSING YOU TO HUNGER and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that MAN DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord (Deuteronomy 8:3 NIV).

HE HUMBLED YOU, CAUSING YOU TO HUNGER…

Beloved, you know the story of the Israelites when they wandered in the wilderness. They got to point where they were obviously hungry and that’s why they cried out for food. To them it was a normal desire but according to our feature text, God was behind it… He CAUSED THEM TO HUNGER…

Ever found yourself asking the Lord… but You were the One that said this is what is going to happen? But You said… or didn’t I hear You right? Maybe it was my imagination. If you’ve ever felt like that then you are not alone. I’ve been left in such confused state. Was it a dream? Was it my mind? How come its not coming to pass like You said? But these words jumped out at me like never before… HE HUMBLED YOU, CAUSING YOU TO HUNGER…

He put the desire in your heart but He HUMBLED YOU in the process of waiting for it to be fulfilled. He must be saying humility, patience, obedience etc. is what you need first. For someone to humble you means to make you feel less important or proud… Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down… and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God… You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth… (Deuteronomy 8:12-18 NIV).

Beloved, everyone that has had to really wait on the Lord’s promise would be able to testify that they learnt humility, patience, obedience and loads more first. Personally, I can write a book on it and like a famous preacher put it, they are… THE THINGS YOU LEARN ALONG THE WAY.

Looking up some definitions of Humility, for someone to humble you means to cut one’s ego down to size. It means that a person may have accomplished a lot but doesn’t feel it is necessary to advertise or brag about it… it’s not by my power.

HE HUMBLED YOU, CAUSING YOU TO HUNGER … But God is not a liar. He said every word … that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall not return to Me void [without producing any effect, useless], but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:11 AMP).

Beloved, instead of the frustration, why not learn the lessons? It would happen in due time.

God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her (Genesis 17:15-16 NIV).”

Beloved, yesterday was mother’s day and while mother’s day is a joy for many, let’s face it, it is also a day that some women dread because it is packed with mixed feeling for them.

In many churches, it’s a day when mothers are called out to gives testimonies of what it’s like to be a mother but what happens to those that are still in the waiting room, waiting on the Lord for the fruit of the womb? It must be difficult for anyone in that situation because even with my two children, I know what it feels like to be waiting for the fruit of the womb for years. Except you have experienced it, one can’t explain the feeling and I remember always saying… if it feels like this for me, I can’t imagine what it must feel like for someone that hasn’t even got any.

Having said that, we have to turn our attention to the Lord who told Abraham… “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!” Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent. Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children. So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?” Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (Genesis 18:10-14 NLT)

IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD?

Beloved, we know Sarah’s story. Even when it looked like there was no hope, the Lord changed her name and promised that she would be the mother of nations and it happened just as He said it would. The Lord gave Sarah a new name… THE GOD WHO GIVES LIFE TO THE DEAD AND CALLS INTO BEING THINGS THAT WERE NOT (Romans 4:17 NIV). Then, there was also Elizabeth who… become pregnant in her old age! PEOPLE USED TO SAY SHE WAS BARREN, but she has conceived a son… (Luke 1:36 NLT).

Beloved, do you need a change of name? God is a God WHO GIVES LIFE TO THE DEAD AND CALLS INTO BEING THINGS THAT WERE NOT. What name have you been known by? You can decide to change it by faith today. Give yourself a new name… Call it out… and live it up to God to make things happen.

24. March 2017 · Comments Off on ARE YOU READY FOR THE DISRUPTION? · Categories: Action, Change, Choices, God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Relationship, Self Control, Sin, Spiritual Growth

When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with h‎im (Luke 5:8-9 NLT)

Beloved, have you ever been where Peter was before? “I know that feeling” was what I said to myself as I read our feature text. This is the point in your life where Jesus shows up and you know exactly what He is asking for and for many, it’s at the time when you are not quite ready for the disruption. At this point, Peter probably knew it was make or break for him. He probably knew that he had to make ‎some major changes in his life where he must have thought; “I can’t be going to those places and hanging out with those people anymore. Yes, I know I am going to have to cut some people and some habits off which I am not quite sure I am ready for.

Also, like most people, he probably felt he wasn’t worth it. He felt unworthy. Looking to himself, he must have said, “knowing me, I am bound to mess this up big time”. He was afraid of this massive change and so he said… Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” However, what did Jesus say to him? …Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus (Luke 5:10-11 NLT).

Beloved, are you prepared for such a disruption in your life? Or, do you keep saying “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you”?

Yesterday, the message was “Don’t be afraid to try again” and though trying again may disrupt your whole world but I am a living witness that it pays. You cannot put a price tag on the life and character transformation. I am not there yet but I am reminded of what Apostle Paul said… dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us (Philippians 3:13-14 NLT).

Beloved, so are you prepared to leave everything that is detrimental to your Christain work and walk and follow Jesus for real?

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who by faith have testified to the truth of God’s absolute faithfulness], stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1 AMP)
