Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!” But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God (Acts 8:17‭-‬21 NLT).

Beloved, I was reading this recently and the first thought that came to mind was “your money can’t buy this”. Unfortunately, you find that there are certain people that feel that their money is their power or that their money would get them power. These are people that feel that their money is the only means to get power and control people and things around them and once you’ve done it for a long time, you think you can get away with it… “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed.

Such was the case of Simon in our feature text and let me just break this down for you on a level that you may be able to understand or relate with. Your tithe, special offering or gifts shouldn’t be used to get you the power and influence you so desperately want. You cannot use it to gain the power you so crave for.

Beloved, how did Peter respond to Simon? He basically told him where to go. He said… you can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God… Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive your evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.” (Acts 8:22‭-‬23 NLT)

How I wish there would be more ‘Peters’ to say to people that your money can’t buy this. We would be able to shut this attitude down in the body of Christ.

Beloved, one of my favourite Scriptures is… Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalms 139:23‭-‬24 NLT). I have found that once you start praying this prayer, you would be surprised at the things the Lord would dig up but that’s okay because it doesn’t stop there. Like David, you can also ask the Lord to… Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me (Psalms 51:10 KJV).

Remember, YOUR MONEY CAN’T BUY THIS OR THAT! God’s gift cannot be bought! Submit yourself to the process… Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time (1 Peter 5:6 NKJV)

Then he said, “Take the arrows”; so he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground”; so he struck three times, and stopped. And the man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it! But now you will strike Syria only three times.” (II Kings 13:18‭-‬19 NKJV)

Beloved, I am currently reading a book by Apostle John Eckhardt on Fasting for Breakthrough and Deliverance where he refers to our feature text. He says “Elisha told Joash that he must strike against Syria over and over again until they had been destroyed. Then Elisha told him to take a bow and arrows and strike it on the ground. He didn’t tell him how many times. Joash hit it on the ground three times and stopped. The prophet was very angry because it meant Joash would only defeat the Syrians three times. Three times was not enough to destroy the Syrians as Elisha had prophesied. Perhaps Elisha could have told him how many times to strike the arrows on the ground. But sometimes what is in a person comes out in their actions. Joash didn’t have enough hatred and anger for the enemy to strike the ground beyond the third time-or until the arrow broke!”

Beloved, this left me thinking? How much do you hate the devil? How much do you want to see yourself delivered in whatever area?

I started thinking of the time Jesus’ disciples could not cast out a demon from a little boy and Jesus had to come to their rescue. Later… His disciples asked Him privately, why could not we drive it out? And He replied to them, THIS KIND cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting (Mark 9:28-29 AMPC).

So, if Jesus says…. this kind can only go away through prayer and fasting, do you love your food more than you love your freedom?

Apostle John Eckhardt went on to say “when you are dealing with the enemy, you need to give him more than just a courtesy tap. You need to really want to win. You have to hate what you are fighting so much that you beat it until the arrows break. You must hate lust, poverty, fear, rejection, or whatever it is until you smash it. It’s not just one, two, three, and then look at the prophet and ask, “Did I do good?” Strike it until it is destroyed”.

Hmmm… it’s not just fasting till 12 noon and then say, “did I do good?” It’s not just praying for 30 minutes to one hour and then say, “did I do good?” No, you are to keep praying and fasting or doing whatever it takes until something happens.

Beloved, how desperate are you? How much do you hate that situation you are in? Have you got that much holy anger in you that you want to keep striking until that situation is completely destroyed?

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours [with the same physical, mental, and spiritual limitations and shortcomings], and HE PRAYED intensely for it not to rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months (James 5:17 AMPC).

Beloved, don’t you find it interesting that ‎of all the great things Prophet Elijah did, his prayer is what’s highlighted, letting us know how important the role of prayer is. Elijah is someone that was recorded for doing many remarkable things and while there’s the tendency to focus on the things he did, let’s realise that he couldn’t do any of it without the basic essential and that’s why the Bible tells us that HE PRAYED and there are times when we just need to put a full stop there. ‘ELIJAH PRAYED’.

We are given a very good picture of how Elijah prevailed in prayer to birth things. We are told that… Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bowed deeply in prayer, his face between his knees. Then he said to his young servant, “On your feet now! Look toward the sea.” He went, looked, and reported back, “I don’t see a thing.” “Keep looking,” said Elijah, “seven times if necessary.” And sure enough, the seventh time he said, “Oh yes, a cloud! But very small, no bigger than someone’s hand, rising out of the sea.” “Quickly then, on your way. Tell Ahab, ‘Saddle up and get down from the mountain before the rain stops you.’” (1 Kings 18:42-44 MSG)

Elijah took the birthing position and began to PUSH which has been turned into an acronym for Pray Until Something Happens.

Beloved, Jesus also spent a considerable amount of time praying. On one occasion, Jesus… insisted that His disciples get into the boat and go ahead [of Him] to the other side to Bethsaida, while He was dismissing the crowd. And after He said goodbye to them, He went to the mountain to pray. Now when evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and Jesus was alone on the land… At about the fourth watch of the night (3:00-6:00 a.m) He came to them, walking on the sea… (Mark 6:45-48 AMP).

Jesus obviously knew the importance of prayer and I’m wondering how many of us have reached that place where we feel we ought to start rescheduling things in our lives to give more room to prayer? Most times, we try to fit prayer into our busy schedule but there’s a stage you get to where you finally see the wisdom of doing it the other way round. That stage where you realise “Lord, I definitely cannot do this without You”.

Beloved, you cannot be a powerful Christian if you have a poor prayer life so it’s time to pay due attention to prayer… be unceasing and persistent in prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17 AMPC) …The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results (James 5:16 NLT).

I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead. I want to suffer with Him, sharing in His death, SO THAT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER I WILL EXPERIENCE THE RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD! (Philippians 3:10-11 NLT)

Beloved, in our feature text, you almost get the sense that Apostle Paul is speaking as if there’s a danger of missing and coming short of knowing Christ and so was desperate to do whatever he needed to do. This was not because he thought he could do anything to gain his salvation. NO! This was a holy and reverential fear of shortcomings and probably the reason he urges us to… continue to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).

Apostle Paul knew that there was some pressing forward to do. He needed to keep pressing on and needed whatever help he could get from our High Priest who had been there, done it, got the victory and has made help available for our own journey (Hebrews 4:15-16).

The reason Apostle Paul makes this statement in Philippians 3:10-11 is to know Jesus in a way that transformed him both spiritually and morally. He knew this could not be done in his on strength so was willing to do and suffer anything to gain access and experience the mighty power that raised Jesus from the dead. That same power dwells in us and is working in us to change us (Romans 8:11).

Beloved, Jesus Christ has made available for us the power we need to change into His image and likeness and personally, I don’t want to dance around that power but tap into it and see it working in my life – I want to know and experience all of Jesus and I’m not deceived. It may take some tears, some suffering, letting go of things and dying daily to self.

Apostle Paul went on to say… Finally my dear brothers and sisters… Not that I have already attained this—that is, I have not already been perfected—but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single-minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14 NET).

Beloved, we would not reach complete perfection until when Christ returns to take us into His eternal kingdom but it is my earnest prayer that we ask for the strength and grace to press on and strive towards the price. I pray that God opens our eyes to understand what we need to do to know Him more… the strength to surrender to His will in our garden of Gethsemane, carry our cross and to allow what needs to die in us die so that we can live for Him.

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do (Psalm 1:1-3 NLT).

Beloved, have you ever had those days when you just feel like you need to read your word out of duty‎? Those days when you think you are doing God a favour by reading the word for the day? Those days when you just read the word so you can tick it off your To Do list? Well, if that has ever been your experience, permit me to ask you to take a minute right now and say this short prayer; “Lord, Your word says… For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him (Philippians 2:13 NLT)… so in 2017, I am asking that You give me the desire to delight in Your word, meditating on it day and night because I realise that that’s where my fruitfulness lies”.

Beloved, the book of Joshua says… Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do (Joshua 1:8 NLT). Let this be your reality this year – where you know and you know and you know that your prosperity and success depends on meditating on the Word of God. Job said… I have not departed from His commands, but have TREASURED HIS WORDS MORE THAN DAILY FOOD (Job 23:12 NLT). While David said… Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path (Psalm 119:105 NLT).

I started reading the book of Genesis and throughout the first chapter, all you will hear is… “Then God said, let there be…”. We are then told that… By faith [that is, with an inherent trust and enduring confidence in the power, wisdom and goodness of God] we understand that the worlds (universe, ages) were framed and created [formed, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose] BY THE WORD OF GOD, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible (Hebrews 11:3 AMP).

… BY THE WORD OF GOD… Beloved, you need to live by the word of God this year and nothing else. You must desire it like food and if you don’t have appetite, remember to ask the Lord to give you the desire to meditate on the word day and night… For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13 AMP).

I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency] (Philippians 4:13 AMPC).

Beloved, “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me…” has got to be one of our most quoted Scriptures in the Bible, but when you really meditate on this scripture, you would come to the realisation that whenever you back down from doing anything that you are meant to do, you haven’t fully grasped the revelation of this text. My daughter has just come back from India after spending 3 weeks spreading the gospel and healing all manner of sicknesses in the name of Jesus Christ and to be honest, we didn’t want her to go because firstly she was going on her own and then we’ve heard of some of the things that have happened to Christians there but she heard from God and nothing was stopping her.

Was she afraid? Off course she was? But she heard God. In one of her meetings, they brought a woman with withered hands from birth and when she first saw her, she said to herself “oh my God I’m in trouble”, but that’s because for a minute, she looked at her own strength. However, because it is Jesus that heals, this woman moved her hands for the first time. Halleluiah!

Beloved, as Christians, when you understand that regardless of the task ahead of you, you are not relying on your own strength, but that of Jesus Christ, your ‘I CAN’T’ suddenly becomes… I can do ALL things…

The boldness of Peter and John always catches my attention. After healing the Crippled Beggar by the Beautiful Gate, they drew the wrong kind of attention and eventually landed in jail for preaching about Christ, but when they were brought before the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law, Peter filled with the Holy Spirit, began to talk to them with such confidence. Where did this confidence come from? The Bible tells us that… when they saw the boldness and unfettered eloquence of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and untrained in the schools [common men with no educational advantages], they marveled; and they RECOGNIZED THAT THEY HAD BEEN WITH JESUS (Acts 4:13 AMPC).

They RECOGNIZED THAT THEY HAD BEEN WITH JESUS… That’s what a relationship with Jesus should do to you. It didn’t matter that they were unlearned, untrained and inexperienced, but they spoke with such boldness and eloquence of speech.

Beloved, when faced with a challenging task, instead of stepping down, we have to quickly accept that as far as it is God that has asked us to do it, then it means He knows we can do it. END OF STORY! On our part, what we have to do is renew our minds based on this ‘I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me’ Scripture. It’s a daily exercise for us all to… be transformed by the renewing of your mind? (Romans 12:2 NIV)

14. September 2016 · Comments Off on WHAT COULD THE LORD BE TEACHING YOU ABOUT YOUR ABILITY? · Categories: God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Power and Authority, Trusting God

Just as an eagle stirs up its nest, encouraging its young to fly, and then hovers over them in case they need help, and spreads its wings and catches them if they fall, and carries them up high on its wings; So the Eternal guided Jacob through the wilderness… (Deuteronomy 32:11-12 Voice).

Beloved, recently, I was telling a friend that what I perceive the Lord is doing in us is that He is training us to use our authority to change our situation. God isn’t wicked and so if after all the pleading and going through the motions with Him things aren’t changing then, perhaps He is leaving it up to you to see what you are going to do about it.

So, lets picture this. Jesus says… Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19 NKJV). You are then confronted with a ‘serpents and scorpions’ like situation but instead of exercising your authority, you are crying out to Him. I can just imagine what He’s saying. Perhaps, its exactly what He said to Moses… “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground (Exodus 14:15-16 NLT).

Moses, you do something with what I’ve placed in your hand…

Beloved, in our feature text, God gives us a picture of what an eaglet does to its baby eaglet and I began to talk about how evil the baby eaglet must think her mother is when she starts to teach her how to fly. As the eaglet reaches flying age, mama eagle begins to stir up the once comfortable nest to make it as uncomfortable as possible. Gradually, she starts to push baby eaglet closer to the edge of the nest which is usually located high upon a cliff and then one day she deliberately pushes baby eaglet who doesn’t yet know how to use her wings to fly down the cliff.

“Mama! Are you planning to kill me? What wrong have I done that’s so bad?” Baby eaglet thinks it’s all over for her but just as she’s about to hit the ground, mama eaglet flies underneath her, carries her and brings her back up again into the nest. But it isn’t over. Before baby eaglet knows what’s happening, the silent mama eaglet does it again. This training exercise is repeated over and over again until finally, baby eaglet can’t face the trauma of being dropped anymore and so out of desperation, she learns to flap her wings and begins flying.

Beloved, unfortunately, that’s the only way mama eagle can get baby eaglet to use her wings to fly. What could the Lord be teaching you about your ability? Is it your authority? Would you rather continue with the dropping?

The Bible says… You will… declare a thing, and it will be established for you… (Job 22:28 NKJV). I like how the Voice translation says… You will pronounce something to be, and He will make it so…

13. September 2016 · Comments Off on DON’T BE POISONED BY BITTERNESS · Categories: Anger, Bitterness, Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, Power and Authority, Prayer, Repentance

And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for YOUR HEART IS NOT RIGHT IN THE SIGHT OF GOD. Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. FOR I SEE THAT YOU ARE POISONED BY BITTERNESS and bound by iniquity.” (Acts 8:18-23 NKJV)

Beloved, recently, I heard a prophet say that Satan wanted him to be so crushed by people that he use the weaponry of the spirit to control and wound them… to kill them with his words but the Lord had to deal with his bitterness.

Hmmm… what was he saying? This is a case of people trying to use their supernatural ability to control and curse others and in many cases the root cause is bitterness. In our feature text, we see that Simon was eager to acquire some supernatural way to control people and amongst other things, Peter was able to identify that the root of his pursuit was bitterness.

Simon used to be a sorcerer and like this person said, witchcraft was probably his way of retaliating people because of his resentment because there is a relationship between releasing curses and bitterness. Unfortunately, we find that today many Christians, even Christian leaders have allowed bitterness to consume them to the point that they begin to make soulish incantations calling it prayer; “nothing is ever going to go right for you wherever you go etc.”

They begin to use their words to curse you. However, the enemy tried to use Balaam to curse the people of God but he was at least smart enough to know… how can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I condemn those whom the Lord has not condemned? (Numbers 23:8 NLT)

Beloved… Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you, along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence] (Ephesians 4:31 AMP). I love how the Voice translation puts it… Banish bitterness, rage and anger, shouting and slander, and any and all malicious thoughts—these are poison.

Has someone wronged you? Don’t be poisoned by bitterness… “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord (Romans 12:19 NKJV). This is not to say you shouldn’t pray. God doesn’t like injustice but I remember telling God that if I pray with my understanding on a particular case then, I know I would be crossing the line. So I would rather pray with the Spirit because… We are weak and do not know how to pray, so the Spirit steps in and articulates prayers for us with groaning too profound for words (Romans 8:26 Voice).

‏Because we are in this particular role, it is especially important that we are people of fidelity and integrity. It makes little difference to me how you or any human court passes judgment on me. I even resist the temptation to compare myself to the ever-changing human standard. Although I am not aware of any flaw that might exclude me from this divine service, that’s not the reason I stand acquitted—the only supreme judge, our Lord, will examine me in the proper time (1 Corinthians 4:2-4 VOICE).

Beloved, a friend told me that this year, the Lord told her to have an audience of one where that one is God Himself. What this means is that the Lord was asking her to focus on Him; “Don’t focus on anyone. Don’t focus on yourself but just stay focus on Me”.

As I read our feature text, what she said came to mind. Here, Apostle Paul is saying… It makes little difference to me how you or any human court passes judgment on me…. probably because he knows people would always have something to say…

However, regardless of people’s impression about you, you should make the decision to be a person of integrity. Unfortunately, for many of us, when there are people around, there’s a tendency to act in a particular way just to give them a good impression about us but behind closed doors, we could be something else. However, there’s a word for that kind of behaviour which is simply ‘hypocrisy’ and while we can fool people, we cannot fool God. Like the Bible says… Make no mistake: God can’t be mocked. What you give is what you get. What you sow, you harvest (Galatians 6:7 Voice).

Paul goes on to say that… When the Lord comes, He will draw our buried motives, thoughts, and deeds (even things we don’t know or admit to ourselves) out of the dark shadows of our hearts into His light. When this happens, THE VOICE OF GOD WILL SPEAK TO EACH OF US THE ONLY PRAISE THAT WILL EVER MATTER (1 Corinthians 4:5 VOICE).

Beloved, this ought to stir something in you because most times we tend to present a front before people but I always like to say that the greatest revelation that we can ever receive is that nothing is hidden before God. We tend to say it but I wonder whether we truly believe it. What this tells me is that, we should be people of integrity in our thoughts and actions and this should be whether you are in a crowd of people or alone.

Beloved let this be our focus… Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs and examines the hearts [of people and their motives] (Proverbs 21:2 AMP).

03. August 2016 · Comments Off on WHERE DID THIS COME FROM? · Categories: Deliverance, Freedom, Jesus Christ, Power and Authority, Victory

When the crop began to grow and produce grain, the weeds also grew. “The farmer’s workers went to him and said, ‘Sir, the field where you planted that good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from?’ “‘AN ENEMY HAS DONE THIS!’ the farmer exclaimed… (Matthew 13:26-28 NLT)

Beloved, are you facing sudden strong opposition and are wondering where this has come from? Why the sudden attack? Why the sudden opposition? Well… our feature text tells us of the Parable of the wheat and weeds. The workers were surprised to suddenly see weeds appear everywhere. Where did they suddenly come from? They seemed to appear from nowhere but they did not know that the enemies (sorry I meant to say weeds) have been there hiding all along. It’s only because it’s near harvest time that they now begin to spring up one by one. However, the good thing is that the farmer was not ignorant… “AN ENEMY HAS DONE THIS”… he said. He had been watching all along and was giving them enough time to dig a hole big enough for themselves.

But why now? Well, it’s because it’s your season. I’m thinking of when the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they mobilized all their forces to capture him. BUT DAVID WAS TOLD THEY WERE COMING, so he marched out to meet them. The Philistines arrived and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim. So David asked God, “Should I go out to fight the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?” The Lord replied, “YES, GO AHEAD. I WILL HAND THEM OVER TO YOU.” (1 Chronicles 14:8-10 NLT)

Beloved, the beautiful thing about this story is that they ganged up against David but David wasn’t at all ignorant. While the Philistines were planning and making their way to David, David had already received first-hand information and isn’t it always a joy to know that God, the One that anointed him; the One who says… Touch not My anointed, and do my prophets no harm (1 Chronicles 16:22), is always one step ahead. The Lord promised him victory… GO AHEAD. I WILL HAND THEM OVER TO YOU… and I like how God assures us that… Behold, they may gather together and stir up strife, but it is not from Me. Whoever stirs up strife against you SHALL FALL AND SURRENDER TO YOU (Isaiah 54:15 AMP).

Oh yes, the Philistines came but David repeatedly conquered them… So David’s fame spread everywhere, and the Lord caused all the nations to fear David (1 Chronicles 14:17 NLT).

Beloved, this is also going to be our testimony. The Lord has opened my eyes to so much that it can be overwhelming to even consider where the attack is coming from. However, one thing I’m sure of is that every force that has gathered to stop us would SURELY FALL AND SURRENDER because… we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us (Romans 8:37 AMP).
