Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones become living people again?” “O Sovereign Lord,” I replied, “you alone know the answer to that.” Then He said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am going to put breath into you and make you live again! (Ezekiel 37:3-5 NLT).

Beloved, have you got an ‘ONLY GOD KNOWS’ situation‏? By this I mean, from the way things are going, you don’t have the confidence to say this is how this thing is going to turn out because in your eyes, it is more or less a dead situation. Such was the case with Ezekiel in our feature text but the Lord showed him that he could speak the word of the Lord over the situation to make it live again.

In the same way, you shouldn’t just sit there and watch things die. You should respond by prophesying life into that situation. If you know the mind of Christ then you know what He desires. Jesus said… The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life (John 10:10 NLT). His word also says… Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually] (3 John 2 AMPC). So, instead of sitting there wondering whether you would ever get well… whether you are ever going to succeed, why not prophecy and say “I’m going to get well… I’m going to succeed”. Locate what the word of God says and don’t stop speaking it.

Ezekiel said… So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone (Ezekiel 37:7 EXB).

Beloved, Ezekiel said “So ‘I’”, not the Lord, ‘I’ prophesied and something happened and while it may be a progressive thing where you don’t see all the results at once, just keep prophesying… Then He said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again.’” So I spoke the message as he commanded me, and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army (Ezekiel 37:9-10 NLT).

This is what the Sovereign Lord says… So I spoke … and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet…

Beloved,… Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words (Proverbs 18:21 AMP). Why not start speaking life into your situation?

“Now then, just as the Lord promised, He has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time He said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as He said.” ‎(Joshua 14:10-12 NIV)

Beloved, I remember listening to someone share about how they were rebuked for saying they were getting old. Someone had asked how they were doing and in response they said… “I’m doing good but I’m getting old”. However, immediately they said that, they were told to erase that narrative from their mind. Apparently, they were in their mid-fifties and this person that asked how they were doing was in their eighties and the reason they said to erase that narrative from their mind was because they said that every good break that they had happened after they were 65 which means that age isn’t a limitation.

ERASE THAT NARRATIVE FROM YOUR MIND!!!

This made me think of Caleb. Many of us are plagued with the ‘I am getting old’ syndrome and that’s why we have things like mid-life crisis syndrome but I like that the Bible points us to role models like Caleb who at the age of 85 had a very different mind-set… I am still as strong today… I’m just as vigorous… Lord helping me, I will drive them out…

‎Beloved, are you feeling like there’s no more hope for you because you think your best days are behind you? Well, where’s your fighting spirit? It’s about what the Lord says you can do and His ability to restore you and help you redeem time ‎but you have to be willing to get up and go after it.

We know about Job who received restoration… double for his trouble and I like the sub-heading my Bible gives that portion of his story; CONCLUSION: THE LORD BLESSES JOB… So the Lord blessed Job in the second half of his life even more than in the beginning. For now he had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 teams of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys (Job 42:12 NLT).

The Lord says, “I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts… (Joel 2:25 NLT). However, you can’t hold on to the past and try to take hold of the future as well? So, which one would you let go?

30. May 2017 · Comments Off on CONTINUE TO BE A PRISONER OF HOPE‏ · Categories: God's Plan, Hope, Patience, Trusting God

Return to the stronghold [of security and prosperity], you prisoners of hope; even today do I declare that I will restore double your former prosperity to you (Zechariah 9:12 AMPC).

Beloved, a prisoner is someone who is confined in prison or kept in custody, especially as the result of legal process while a prison is a building for the confinement of persons held while awaiting trial or sentenced after conviction. So, when our feature text talks about being a ‘prisoner of hope’, it is referring to someone who is confined to remain in hope which is our prison and I once remember a preacher so beautifully illustrating this once when they brought a prison on stage.

We are meant to be prisoners of hope. However, like the Shunammite woman, many of us are runaway prisoners. We’ve released ourselves from the prison of hope. After what seems like a lifetime of waiting to have a child, she decided… forget it… and so when she was told by Elisha… “Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!” “No, my lord!” she cried. “O man of God, DON’T DECEIVE ME AND GET MY HOPES UP LIKE THAT.” (2 Kings 4:16 NLT)

…DON’T DECEIVE ME AND GET MY HOPES UP LIKE THAT… She couldn’t bear to hope again but that’s because… Hope deferred makes the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12) and the problem for many of us is that we don’t want to feel that sickness of the heart. Prolonged waiting without seeing any result has actually become traumatic for some. However, waiting for the unseen is what hope is all about… If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently (Romans 8:24-25 NLT).

This means as long as we haven’t seen results, we must remain locked up and continue hoping but it’s not just for nothing. I like that our text says… the reward is a double portion of your former prosperity and like Job who said… I wait, till my change come (Job 12:12), He sure got a double portion of what he lost.

Beloved, don’t be a runaway prisoner. Return to your prison and keep hoping… for surely there is a latter end [a future and a reward], and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off (Proverbs 23:18 AMPC).

You are only under trial… For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing (James 1:3-4 NLT).

O Lord, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself forever?… REMEMBER HOW SHORT MY LIFE IS… (Psalm 89:46-47 NLT)

Beloved, you’ve just got to laugh when you come across some passages in the Bible. It’s consoling though because it makes one realise that there’s nothing one would ever go through or feel that someone else in the Bible hasn’t passed through or felt before.

REMEMBER HOW SHORT MY LIFE IS… Other translations say…HOW SHORT MY TIME IS…

More like “Lord, in case you haven’t noticed, time is not on my side. I know what You say about patience and all but how long am I to wait? I’m not like You who lives for forever…. For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours (Psalm 90:4 NLT) but for me, the clock is ticking so, what are you waiting for?

Beloved, isn’t this what a lot of us are thinking? One of our biggest problem is that we feel time is against us but we must realise that God is the beginning and the end and we fit somewhere in that timeframe. He included you in there for a specific purpose. So, He must know when your life started and surely He knows when it would end. He knows what He promised has to happen within your timeline. You must also know that God never intends to start anything He isn’t intending to finish. Had He not intended to complete it, He won’t have started it so why are you stressing?

Caleb is a good example. He said to Joshua; “You’ll remember what God said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me… I was FORTY YEARS OLD when Moses…sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land… Now look at me: GOD HAS KEPT ME ALIVE, as He promised. It is now forty-five years since God spoke this word to Moses…AND HERE I AM TODAY, EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS OLD! I’M AS STRONG AS I WAS THE DAY MOSES SENT ME OUT. I’m as strong as ever in battle, whether coming or going. So give me this hill country that God promised me… IF GOD GOES WITH ME, I will drive them out, JUST AS GOD SAID.” (Joshua 14:7-12 MSG)

Beloved, Caleb was totally reliant on the God that made the promise. Whether he was 40 or 85 was irrelevant. It was all about “GOD HAS KEPT ME ALIVE… IF GOD GOES WITH ME… JUST AS GOD SAID…”

Beloved, in Abraham and Sarah’s case… the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD?… (Genesis 18:13-14 NIV)

Please know that God is not on your clock. Rather, you are on His clock. He is the One that has plans for you and so you must know that… He who has begun a good work in you will complete it… (Philippians 1:6)

“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit (Jeremiah 17:7‭-‬8 NLT).

Beloved, there’s the opposite of our feature text which says… “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land (Jeremiah 17:5‭-‬6 NLT)

Another Scripture says… Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life (Proverbs 13:12 NKJV). So, perhaps the reason why you are getting your heart is getting sick or frustrated is because you are still placing your hope in man, waiting for man to open doors or to finance the project and the Lord is waiting for you to exhaust all your sources of hope and when you have nowhere else to go then, perhaps you would finally turn to Him and say I have nowhere else to go.

Our feature text says you will not be… bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. The NKJV says and will not be anxious in the year of drought… This is because your trust is in the Lord and you know that… “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (Numbers 23:19 NKJV)

The Lord is saying that for what I am about to do in your life, it would only take me. Yes, I might use men but you cannot put your trust in man because as you can already see, they are unstable and would let you down but when you put your trust in the Lord, you would have no reason to worry or be afraid of disappointment.

“These are the words of the Holy One, the True One, He who has the key [to the house] of David, He who opens and no one will [be able to] shut, and He who shuts and no one opens: ‘I know your deeds. See, I have set before you an open door which no one is able to shut, for you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not renounced or denied My name (REVELATION 3:7‭-‬8 AMP).

However, you must trust me and… be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV).

“Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!” “NO, MY LORD!” SHE CRIED. “O MAN OF GOD, DON’T DECEIVE ME AND GET MY HOPES UP LIKE THAT.” But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said (2 Kings 4:16-17 NLT)

Beloved, if you’ve never been in a situation where you’ve waited and waited on God and nothing happened, then you won’t understand where this lady is coming from but I’m sure the rest of us totally understand.

I remember when my brother once told me a story of a grown man who waited for a very long time for a bus out in the cold London winter weather and when the bus eventually came, this man got on it and started to sob. Why are you crying sir? “I waited and waited and waited for the bus to come but it didn’t come”, he said. But aren’t you on the bus now? LOL. Beloved, why was this grown man crying? I believe it’s because there’s something about hoping and waiting for long periods of time that just doesn’t sit well with us. We can’t handle the pain of waiting.

In our feature text, we are told of this wealthy Shunammite woman. In a specific aspect of her life, she had concluded that all hope was lost. But what might have shattered her HOPE?

The bus just wasn’t coming. Over and over again, she had repeatedly failed in the area of child bearing. Each time the pregnancy test results came back with a negative, a little bit of her hope was chipped away until there was nothing left. The Bible says… Hope deferred makes the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12 NLT). Again, if you haven’t experienced long delays, you won’t understand. For this woman, it reached a point that instead of morning sickness, she experienced a sickness in the heart as her hope was deferred time after time. So, she decided this is just too painful. I just can’t take it anymore. I’ve got to stop this. She gave up because it was way easier to carry on without this expectation than to remain vulnerable and left heartbroken each time. Also, with her husband being old, their natural conditions were no longer favourable. So naturally speaking, hoping was just a waste of time.

She must have said what’s the point but then she looked to other things to fill the void (2 Kings 4:13). “At least, I’m comfortable in other aspects of life. I’m wealthy and influential. Maybe God doesn’t want me to have a child and that’s why He has blessed me in the other areas”. That’s always our way of anesthetizing the pain. She took her hope of ever having a child, locked it up in a box and threw it into the sea, never to be retrieved and now addresses the man of God as a liar. No! The devil is the liar because sure enough, the woman soon had a son.

Beloved, the bus finally came. Dare to hope again?

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: BUT DAVID ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD (1 Samuel 30:6 KJV).

Beloved, Scripture says… to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more (Luke 12:48 NKJV). So, don’t be deceived, any kind of leadership position be it a parent, a minister, a boss or a supervisor, can be a great burden. So, what do you do when all odds are against you and all the people that look up to you now turn against you because they no longer have faith in you? They are very distressed but you too are also distressed. Times like that can be overwhelming but it’s not the time to give up. Rather it’s the time to turn to the Lord.

David had just been sent back home, rejected from going to battle with the Philistines, only to find out that they had been raided. Their town was burned to the ground, and their wives and children taken as prisoners. David and his men wept until they were exhausted. Out of frustration, his men turned on him. It’s your fault David. They were about to stone him to death. Maybe it would make them feel better. But David didn’t say his last prayer. NO. He turned to God.

The Amplified Bible says …DAVID ENCOURAGED AND STRENGTHENED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD. He must have remembered all the promises God had made to him and knowing that they still had to be fulfilled, he determined in his heart that this can’t be the end. He asked God for strength, reaffirmation and direction.

David prayed to God, “Shall I go after these raiders? Can I catch them?” The answer came, “Go after them! Yes, you’ll catch them! Yes, you’ll make the rescue!” (1 Samuel 30:7-8 MSG)

David found renewed strength. He went after that devil… David pounced. He fought them from before sunrise until evening of the next day. None got away except for four hundred of the younger men who escaped by riding off on camels. David rescued everything the Amalekites had taken. And he rescued his two wives! Nothing and no one was missing—young or old, son or daughter, plunder or whatever. David recovered the whole lot. He herded the sheep and cattle before them, and they all shouted, “David’s plunder!” (1 Samuel 30:17-20 MSG)

That’s how the story ends. Had David given up, he would have lost everything… What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31 NKJV).

Beloved, don’t think of quitting. Find strength in the Lord. Blank out everything and turn to His word. He will tell you how ‘He will never leave nor forsake you’. He will tell you that ‘you are more than a conqueror’. He will show you the way out. He will tell you the victory that is ahead of you.

His faith did not fail, ALTHOUGH HE WAS WELL AWARE THAT his impotent body, after nearly 100 years, was as good as dead and that Sarah’s womb, too, was dead. In spite of all this, his faith in God’s promise did not falter. In fact, his faith grew as he gave glory to God because he was supremely confident that God could deliver on His promise (Romans 4:19-21 VOICE).

ALTHOUGH HE WAS WELL AWARE THAT‎…

Beloved, whenever you are presented with an impossible situation, this is always one portion of scripture to keep in front of you because if Abraham was fully aware of the impossible situation that himself and his wife faced, and he still found it in him to believe what God promised which is that he would be the father of many nation, then it proves that truly nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37)

And I love that God honoured his faith because God rewards great faith (Hebrews 11:6). Abraham was fully aware of the facts presented before Him but he made a conscious decision to take his focus of the facts and place it on the God who made the promises because he probably knew very well that ‎once you focus on the facts and meditate on it, you are no longer giving your faith a chance to work‎.

Beloved… faith proceeds from hearing, as we listen to the message about God’s Anointed (Romans 10:17 VOICE)… not ‎by hearing the word of your situation.

The other point to note here is that like someone said, faith comes by hearing and not just reading and this is why you have to keep meditating on the promises of God for your situation until it speaks to you. That’s when you get impregnated by the word and in no time, you are sure to give birth to your promise.

The opposite of this position is to lose hope because once you lose hope, you have nothing to stand on because as we know‎… Faith is the assurance of THINGS YOU HAVE HOPED FOR, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen (Hebrews 11:1 VOICE).

Thinking of the Shunammite woman, she told Elisha… “O man of God, don’t deceive me and get my hopes up like that.” (2 Kings 4:16 NLT). What she was telling Elisha was don’t get my hopes up only for me to be disappointed. She was so afraid of getting her hopes up and then being disappointed but she needed to hope again.

Beloved, what are your eyes fixed on? Have you looked at your situation and lost hope based on what you see? Remember… hope does not involve what we already have or see. For who goes around hoping for what he already has? But if we wait expectantly for things we have never seen, then we hope with true perseverance and eager anticipation (Romans 8:24-25 VOICE).

TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE FACTS OF YOUR SITUATION and just continue to wait on the Lord, praising your way through.

So here I am. The Eternal has spared my life these 45 years… HERE I AM TODAY, 85 YEARS OLD, STILL AS STRONG… ABLE TO FIGHT AND ABLE TO WORK. SO NOW I ASK THAT YOU GIVE ME THIS HILL COUNTRY THE ETERNAL SPOKE ABOUT ON THAT DAY. You heard then how the Anakim were there with great fortified cities, and so they are still. BECAUSE THE ETERNAL GOES WITH ME, I WILL DRIVE THEM OUT, JUST AS HE HAS SAID (Joshua 14:10-12 VOICE).

Beloved, someone recently asked the question; “what do you do when you’ve been praying to God about something for a very long time and it seems like He isn’t responding? I said “well, to be honest, there are moments when we get discouraged because like the Bible says… Hope deferred makes the heart sick… (Proverbs 13:12). The Voice translation says… Hope postponed grieves the heart…

Yes, if I must admit, there’s a frustration that comes with the waiting but the truth is that regardless of how we feel, we must never lose hope.

In our feature text, we have Caleb who was made a promise at the age of 40 and now at the age of 85, he walks up to Joshua to say… HERE I AM TODAY, 85 YEARS OLD, STILL AS STRONG… ABLE TO FIGHT AND ABLE TO WORK. SO NOW I ASK THAT YOU GIVE ME THIS HILL COUNTRY THE ETERNAL SPOKE ABOUT ON THAT DAY…

So, the question is “why and where did Caleb get the patience to wait for 45 years for that promise and were did he get his strength from?”

I believe the answer is because he believed that the God that made the promise is faithful to His promise. He also believed in and trusted in the Lord’s ability then at the age of 40 (Numbers 14:8-9) and He still believed in and trusted in it now at the age of 85 and though we change and may grow old and weak, God never changes and that was how Caleb got his strength… BECAUSE THE ETERNAL GOES WITH ME, I WILL DRIVE THEM OUT, JUST AS HE HAS SAID.

Beloved, 45 years may seem a long time and when we take our focus away from the Lord, we faint and get weary… but those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] will gain new strength and renew their power; They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun]; They will run and not become weary, they will walk and not grow tired (Isaiah 40:31 AMP).

The VOICE translation says… those who trust in the Eternal One will regain their strength…

Do you need to regain some strength? Remember that… For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are [all answered] “Yes.” So through Him we say our “Amen” to the glory of God (2 Corinthians 1:20 AMP).

The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” (Acts 3:5-6 NLT)

The Bible records that there was a man crippled from birth that always sat by the church gate to beg from those going into the church. I can only imagine how people treated him. Some, if they bothered at all, may just throw money into his bowl without looking at him but not Peter and John. They knew they were called to be the salt and light of the world; people called to make a difference. As they were about to enter the church, the man asked them for the usual handout but… Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” (Acts 3:4 NLT). We are a different kind of Christians. We have power.

Beloved, today, we live in a world where many have said there is no God. They come up with all sorts of reasons why they shouldn’t believe in Jesus. But how are we responding? Are we sitting round the table at lunch time at work talking about how bad the economy is or are we doing things to prove them wrong?

In our feature text, just as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit comes on believers in power, enabling them to do miracles like this. Now they can participate in the truth of the good news in such a way that made a remarkable difference in this man’s life… All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! They all rushed out in amazement to… where the man was holding tightly to Peter and John. PETER SAW HIS OPPORTUNITY and addressed the crowd. “People of Israel,” he said, “what is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness? For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of all our ancestors—who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by doing this… (Acts 3:9-13 NLT).

PETER SAW HIS OPPORTUNITY and addressed the crowd…

Beloved, I don’t know about you but I don’t just want to be a talking Christian. I want to do what Jesus said I can when He said “…anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works… (John 14:12 NLT).

We no longer have time for too much talk. If we want to win souls for Jesus, let’s show the world how He can make a difference in their lives. This lame man…  jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, HE WENT INTO THE TEMPLE WITH THEM (Acts 3:8 NLT).
