Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick.” (John 11:1-3 NIV)

Beloved, someone once asked me why God seems to delay His answer to a legitimate request. He presents you with a lead and everything seems to point to the fact that it’s going to happen this time. However, the next thing you see is a dead end. Either people suddenly turn cold and lose interest or they start making excuses and the question is “How much longer will THE ONE who can do ALL THINGS just look?”

Well, let’s take a look at the case of Mary and Martha whom we know had a legitimate request but met A DEAD END. Everything in our feature text seems to point to the fact that Jesus had every reason to heed to their request. It was Mary and her sister Martha, very close friends with Jesus. Martha served Him diligently and Mary was a genuine worshipper and it was the one Jesus loved that was sick but oddly, see how Jesus responded to that love… Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. SO WHEN HE HEARD THAT LAZARUS WAS SICK, HE STAYED WHERE HE WAS TWO MORE DAYS (John 11:5-6 NIV).

Beloved, this doesn’t sound right? My brother is genuinely sick to the point of death. Thanks for confirming that I am greatly favoured with Your love for me but then Your response should be to answer me immediately and not stay where You are because You love me. However, what they didn’t know was that His love for their family qualified them to be candidates for Him to do the exceedingly, abundantly above all that they could ask or think; something bigger and better than they expected. They experienced real tears but Jesus showed up in the end. He raised Lazarus from the dead publicly and in the presence of every doubter.

Interestingly, the name ‘Lazarus’ means ‘God is my help’ or ‘God has helped’; not ‘man’ but ‘God’. There are some dead-end situations you face that if God doesn’t help you, you can’t get out and God waits until everyone around you lets you down so that you know He alone is God. It’s a set up. He is working out your faith.

Beloved, we don’t always understand why our manifestation tarries but Lazarus’s story shows that He was only part of the Lord’s bigger picture to show everyone; His friends, disciples and the Jews that He is the ‘Resurrection and the Life’. Surely the maker of the world can do ALL things. The Lord’s response was a resurrection and all Jesus wanted them to do was to believe so they could see the glory of God (John 11:40). Do you believe? Do you need to roll away that stone of unbelief?

Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t IT OBVIOUS THAT GOD-TALK WITHOUT GOD-ACTS IS OUTRAGEOUS NONSENSE? (James 2:14-17 MSG)

Beloved, we’ve often been told that if you have faith, your prayers would be answered and so, the question is; “is it just faith alone?” Would you just sit-down there and pray, pray, pray without doing anything? Is there no corresponding action to go with your prayers? The Amplified version of our feature text says… faith, if it does not have works [to back it up], is by itself dead [inoperative and ineffective]. The Amplified Bible, Classic Edition says… faith, if it does not have works (deeds and actions of obedience to back it up), by itself is destitute of power (inoperative, dead).

I like what the Lord told Moses as Moses cried out to Him in the face of trouble. Moses had told the Israelites he was leading that… The Lord will fight for you while you [only need to] keep silent and remain calm.” (Exodus 14:14 AMP). However, how did the Lord respond?… The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to move forward [toward the sea]. As for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the sons of Israel may go through the middle of the sea on dry land (Exodus 14:14-16 AMP).

Beloved, Moses had to take some action before he could see any results. We are also told of Cornelius… He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was everyone in his household. HE GAVE GENEROUSLY TO THE POOR AND PRAYED REGULARLY TO GOD (Acts 10:2 NLT) and on one faithful day, an angel of God appeared to him in a vision and said…“YOUR PRAYERS AND GIFTS TO THE POOR have been RECEIVED BY GOD AS AN OFFERING! (Acts 10:4 NLT)

Beloved, God also noticed his gifts to the poor which He received as an offering to Himself and this set the ball rolling for this man and his family. God started moving people on his behalf. Peter had a vision and… as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, “Three men have come looking for you. Get up, go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation…” (Acts 10:19-20 NLT. This mans’ prayer backed with good deeds contributed to changing the destiny of the entire Gentiles (Acts 10:44-45).

Beloved, what am I trying to say? Can you decide on actions you can take to back your prayers? As you do so, I pray you receive a divine visitation that would turn things around for your family.

For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV).

Beloved, according to our feature text, our Christian walk is one where we walk by faith, not by sight. This means that if anything at all, your faith should increase as the evidence you see decreases and not the other way round. The Message translation says… It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going. So, is the fact that all evidence of what you are hoping for has disappeared keeping you going stronger in faith or has that voice overshadowed your mind; telling you that there’s no point… you shouldn’t bother anymore… that situation is dead and buried?

The Bible tells us of a time Jesus was interrupted by a lady in need while on His way to solve another man’s problem. We are told that… While He was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told Him, “Your daughter is dead. THERE’S NO USE TROUBLING THE TEACHER NOW.” But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “DON’T BE AFRAID. JUST HAVE FAITH.” (Mark 5:35-36 NLT)

Beloved, there are many voices telling you the same thing right now. These voices say it’s over. They say case closed. However, that’s lost hope. There’s no faith in that and without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). The good news is that Jesus knows those voices are speaking to you but He wants you to JUST HAVE FAITH and here’s something Jesus did that you too need to do.

When Jesus got to Jairus’ house and saw the crowd of negative voices… JESUS STOPPED THE CROWD AND WOULDN’T LET ANYONE GO WITH HIM EXCEPT PETER, JAMES, AND JOHN (THE BROTHER OF JAMES). When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” The crowd laughed at him. BUT HE MADE THEM ALL LEAVE… (Mark 5:37-40 NLT)

Beloved, on your journey of faith, there are some negative people and voices that can’t come along with you. For the kind of thing that Jesus wants to do in your life, get rid of the people laughing at you. Only those that can keep the faith alive are the ones that can come along. For everyone else… MAKE THEM ALL LEAVE… and that includes the voices in your head. What you need to do is to be surrounded by the word of God because faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17).

Beloved, read your Bible. Replay those messages and prophecies. Be persistent in prayer, in praise and in worship and as you do so I pray that just like the case of Jaruis’ daughter, to your amazement, you would experience what you’ve been hoping for immediately stand up and walk (Mark 5:42).

20. August 2017 · Comments Off on THE VULNERABILITY OF STRETCHING YOUR FAITH WITHOUT BORDERS · Categories: Faith, God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Trusting God

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus (Matthew 14:28-29 NLT).

Beloved, the Lord speaks to me a lot through songs and when He drops a song in my spirit, I know to pay ‎attention to the lyrics. So, yesterday morning, I found myself humming to Hillsong’s “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”. Not knowing the lyrics that well‎, I went on Google and this is what it said…

You call me out upon the waters… The great unknown where feet may fail… And there I find You in the mystery… In oceans deep… My faith will stand…

Beloved, this was so appropriate to the season I’m in right now; a season where the Lord just starts to stretch your faith once again because He’s trying to show you that there’s more to Him and all you are thinking is; I was fine where I was but now, I have to be vulnerable again. ‎A situation where you have to walk on deep waters and no one needs to tell you that left on your own, your feet may fail but because He has called you, there’s something in you that just has to respond. ‎

Beloved, has the Lord ever put you in a situation where you have no choice but to call on His name?‎ A situation where you can’t afford to take your eyes off Him?

I moved on to the following verse that says… Your grace abounds in deepest waters… and the Scripture that comes to mind is… My grace is sufficient for you (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Beloved, there are some situations that the Lord would place you in that He knows only His grace will sustain you. As you obey His call to step out into the deep, He releases grace. Deep down, you may be weak but His strength is what will cover you and to people, it looks like you are one super hero but all you can say is “if only you knew?”

The song then goes onto say… Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders… Let me walk upon the waters… Wherever You would call me… Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander…. And my faith will be made stronger… In the presence of my Savior…

Hmmm… What the writer is saying here is that I’m prepared to step out in faith and don’t mind being vulnerable. I don’t mind my emotions being all over the place for a while but like someone once said; The difference between people that take risks with God and those that don’t is that the ones that do, feel the fear and do it anyway.

Beloved, there’s a level of vulnerability that comes with stepping out on deep waters as Peter shows us (Matthew 14:30-32). However, we ought to give him some credit for stepping out and let’s not forget that Jesus was there to hold his hand just like He would be there to hold yours if you decide to respond to the call.

[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work] (Hebrews 12:2 AMP).

Beloved, there’s a song by Jenn Johnson titled ‘God I Look to You’ that has been in my spirit for days now with lyrics that say… God I look to You, I won’t be overwhelmed… Give me vision to see things like You do… God I look to You, You’re where my help comes from… Give me wisdom; You know just what to do.

One definition of overwhelmed is to bury or drown beneath a huge mass of something. Another definition is to defeat someone or something by using a lot of force. Beloved, that’s what the enemy is up to. He is trying to defeat you by bringing things that would overwhelm you and that’s why like our feature text says, we are to look away from all that will distract us and to focus our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of our faith.

This is similar to what happened to Peter as he stepped out of the boat to walk on water. Satan sent a huge storm to overwhelm him causing him to take his eyes off Jesus and as he succeeded in doing that, he started to drown him.

Beloved, the devil tries to overwhelm with situations all coming at you at the same time. He also releases a lot of doubt, anxiety, depression, fear, confusion etc just to cloud your judgment but like the song says, this is the time to say… God I look to You, I won’t be overwhelmed… Give me vision to see things like You do… God I look to You, You’re where my help comes from… Give me wisdom; You know just what to do

You need to ask the Lord for vision to help you see things the way He sees things. But not just vision, you need to also ask for wisdom. The Bible says… If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. But he must ask [for wisdom] in faith, without doubting [God’s willingness to help], for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind (James 1:5-6 AMP).

Beloved, the psalmist also says… I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber (Psalm 121:1-3 NLT).

Without weakening in his faith, HE FACED THE FACT THAT HIS BODY WAS AS GOOD AS DEAD—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, BEING FULLY PERSUADED THAT GOD HAD POWER TO DO WHAT HE HAD PROMISED (Romans 4:19-21 NIV).

Beloved, I was having a discussion yesterday with a friend and we were talking about the fact that there are times God allows us to get to the position where we know that if God does not do this for me then we know beyond a doubt that it is not going to happen. Many times, because we’ve got options we don’t really get the opportunity to exercise our faith, but when a woman that has reached menopause is still expecting to have a child, then you know that she is waiting on God alone to make it happen and not man.

In our feature text above, Abraham was waiting on the promise of God to have a child and he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead however, he dared to believe God anyway. For him to face facts means that he knew without a doubt that there was no point looking at his situation. His focus had to be 100 per cent on the Lord. He was fully persuaded that God had the power to do what He had promised.

Beloved, I strongly believe that this is why the Lord makes us wait at times. He allows us get to that point when all other options are dead. At that point, we only have two options; give up or believe God. However, guess which option a lot of us settle for? We choose the former and give up but the Lord says… My righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back (Hebrews 10:38 NIV).

Beloved, Abraham should be our example. He did not weaken in faith. On the contrary, he was strengthened in his faith. He knew that God had the power to do what He had promised. Better still, we are to fix… our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2 NIV)

Now, the question is… regardless of the condition of your situation and how dead it may seem, are you fully persuaded that God has the power to do what He has promised? If so, why not begin to give God the glory in advance.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for Me? (Jeremiah 32:26-27 NIV)

12. July 2017 · Comments Off on IS FEAR RULING YOUR LIFE? · Categories: Authority, Faith, Fear, Trusting God

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

Beloved, I remember visiting a friend once and her mum who was with her at the time looked so ill that I had to ask if she was sick. She said yes but my friend interrupted and asked her what her sickness was. She couldn’t give a straight answer but you could see fear written all over her face so with my big mouth, I went straight to the point and asked her what she was afraid of and then she mentioned something about not wanting to die abroad. Hmmm… As she’s well over 70, the fear of death has gripped her so badly that she had convinced herself that she was actually sick and somehow, she’s passed it on to my friend who became worried because looking at mum gave her a picture of how she was going to be at that age. Everyone now had something to be afraid of because unknown to many, fear is satan’s favourite weapon used masterfully against us.

Beloved, someone rightly said FEAR is the enemy’s brand of FAITH; his counterfeit of it and just as you receive from God through faith, you receive from satan through fear. Job said… The worst of my fears has come true, what I’ve dreaded most has happened (Job 3:25 MSG). So, is there any wonder why satan came knocking at his door?

Beloved, as God’s children, our attitude towards fear should be; ‘I WILL NOT LIVE IN FEAR’ because according to our feature text… God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind… so when the enemy threatens you, threaten him back.

The Lord says… Fear not [there is nothing to fear], for I am with you; do not look around you in terror and be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen and harden you to difficulties, yes, I will help you; yes, I will hold you up and retain you with My [victorious] right hand of rightness and justice (Isaiah 41:10 AMPC).

Beloved, we are told to cast… down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV). Today, if you have allowed fear to rule you, why not take a bold step and cast out that spirit of fear that is threatening to rule your life? It’s for freedom that Christ has set you free and I pray that you walk in this freedom and show satan he’s fighting a defeated battle.

…faith, if it does not have works (deeds and actions of obedience to back it up), by itself is destitute of power (inoperative, dead) (James 2:17 AMPC).

Beloved, there was the time the Lord sent a message to Abraham saying… “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!”… (Genesis 18:10 NLT). So, let’s try and get into the minds of Abraham and Sarah. We know Sarah was eavesdropping so on hearing this she must have thought, who are these drunkards that have come to disturb my husband on this hot, sunny afternoon. Why did she find it so amusing?

Well, Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am WORN OUT and my lord is OLD, will I now have this pleasure?” (Genesis 18:11-12 NIV)

Sarah seemed to think she was worn-out… How could a WORN-OUT woman like me enjoy such pleasure? And as for my husband… well he’s OLD. But thank God that He doesn’t sees us the way we see ourselves because while He acknowledges that Sarah is old, He doesn’t see a WORN-OUT woman so He omits that bit in His reply… Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, NOW THAT I AM OLD?’ IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (Genesis 18:13-14 NIV)

Beloved, the Lord said… IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD? Don’t worry, I’ll be back. But then what happens next? Did 99 years OLD aged Abraham say to 90 years OLD and WORN OUT Sarah… Girl it’s on tonight or did they find it too ridiculous and say honey… let’s just sit down by the fire and have a cup of hot cocoa as usual. I don’t want anyone having a heart attack on me this night. Let’s just wait until He comes back next year as promised. They would have been waiting a very long time because no matter how the Lord must have convinced them about His promise, they still had their part to play in it; no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed at the time. They must have said, “at least, let’s try”. Abraham and Sarah had to take corresponding action because as far as I’m aware there’s been only one virgin birth recorded in history.

Beloved, could you be waiting on God when He’s waiting on you to take an act of faith? Yes, things may seem dead or look like it’s not going to work but… like our feature text says… faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:17 NKJV)

So, why not make a decision to act on that thing that God has put in your heart? And as you do so, I pray that the Lord returns to you at the appointed time with a fulfilment of His promise.

12. May 2017 · Comments Off on TAKE UP YOUR SHIELD OF FAITH · Categories: Faith, God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Spiritual Growth, Trusting God

…Truth, righteousness, peace, FAITH, and salvation are more than words. LEARN HOW TO APPLY THEM. You’ll need them throughout your life… (Ephesians 6:13-18 MSG).

Beloved, taking up the SHIELD OF FAITH is another armour of God you can use to fight against the enemy and this is slightly different from the others because it involves taking up rather than putting on. We are told… ABOVE ALL, taking the SHIELD OF FAITH with which you will be able to QUENCH ALL THE FIERY DARTS of the wicked one (Ephesians 6:16 NKJV).

This is an additional layer of protection and ABOVE ALL suggests that the SHIELD OF FAITH is very important because FIERY DARTS can only reach the body if the shield is not held up to block them. I read that the Roman soldiers shield was very large and covered with leather, which when soaked in water was used to put out flame-tipped arrows.

So, what are the FIERY DARTS of the wicked one? Well, they range from fear, doubt, worry, to temptations… but we must take up our shield of faith to QUENCH the flames just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego had great faith in God to save them in the FIERY furnace.

Beloved, you must always trust that the Lord would show up in times of trouble. If you can build up your faith, then those FIERY DARTS of fear, doubt, worry to temptations would be extinguished by the time they hit your SHIELD OF FAITH.

However, Faith tries your PATIENCE and that’s what most of us need to work on. Someone said “waiting on God is actually God giving you time to grow stronger in faith”. So true! I’ve noticed that while waiting on God, He will at intervals reassure you that He will come through for you. It’s then up to you to believe Him or not. This is a big battle because the enemy would do everything to paint a picture that causes you to worry, fear and doubt.

The life of Abraham, our father of faith is one we can learn from. How did he develop faith in God to the extent that he did not question God when God tested him by asking him to sacrifice Isaac, the son he loved so much?

In his previous trial of faith, he and wifey made a mistake. They listened to the devil who said it’s never going to happen now that you are both very old but the second time around, with the Isaac test, he had stronger faith to say “back off satan. I’m not listening to any more of your lies”.

Beloved, Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, GOD WAS ABLE to bring him back to life again… (Hebrews 11:19 NLT)

Abraham’s reasoning shows he had grown stronger in faith. You too need to start reasoning like Abraham. GOD IS INDEED ABLE TO DO THE IMPOSSIBLE and Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see (Hebrews 11:1 NLT) so today, I pray that you hold up this confidence to quench every FIERY DARTS OF fear, doubt, worry and temptations…

Then the angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a cloud]; for that reason the holy (pure, sinless) Child shall be called the Son of God. And listen, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. For with God nothing [is or ever] shall be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD.” And the angel left her (Luke 1:35-38 AMP).

Beloved, when it comes to God, there are some things that would never make sense to the human mind and that’s why the Christian faith is based on believing God. When the angel of God visited Mary, the mother of Jesus and told her that as a virgin she would become pregnant, can you imagine what would have happened if she had allowed herself to really try and reason it out?

If only this is our unshakable response to many of the things God tells us, we would see great things happen. However, most times, we tend to believe for a second or so until satan comes like a thief and snatches the word from us through doubt and reasoning.

The great thing about this text is that God did not just leave Mary with His word, He also left her with somebody else’s testimony. The Message translation says… The angel answered “… did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months pregnant! … Everyone thought she couldn’t have a baby because she had passed child bearing age but it’s not about what you or anyone thinks. It’s about what God has done, what He can and says He would do. And I believe the Lord was also saying… Yes, I did that but don’t even limit Me to that because I am able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you ask or think.

Beloved, what has the Lord told you that you’re still struggling with understanding how it would happen? Well don’t lose another night’s sleep. Rather, until it happens, let this be your watchword… MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD

Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do SUPERABUNDANTLY more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20 AMP)… MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD
