…faith, if it does not have works (deeds and actions of obedience to back it up), by itself is destitute of power (inoperative, dead) (James 2:17 AMPC).

Beloved, there was the time the Lord sent a message to Abraham saying… “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!”… (Genesis 18:10 NLT). So, let’s try and get into the minds of Abraham and Sarah. We know Sarah was eavesdropping so on hearing this she must have thought, who are these drunkards that have come to disturb my husband on this hot, sunny afternoon. Why did she find it so amusing?

Well, Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am WORN OUT and my lord is OLD, will I now have this pleasure?” (Genesis 18:11-12 NIV)

Sarah seemed to think she was worn-out… How could a WORN-OUT woman like me enjoy such pleasure? And as for my husband… well he’s OLD. But thank God that He doesn’t sees us the way we see ourselves because while He acknowledges that Sarah is old, He doesn’t see a WORN-OUT woman so He omits that bit in His reply… Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, NOW THAT I AM OLD?’ IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (Genesis 18:13-14 NIV)

Beloved, the Lord said… IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD? Don’t worry, I’ll be back. But then what happens next? Did 99 years OLD aged Abraham say to 90 years OLD and WORN OUT Sarah… Girl it’s on tonight or did they find it too ridiculous and say honey… let’s just sit down by the fire and have a cup of hot cocoa as usual. I don’t want anyone having a heart attack on me this night. Let’s just wait until He comes back next year as promised. They would have been waiting a very long time because no matter how the Lord must have convinced them about His promise, they still had their part to play in it; no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed at the time. They must have said, “at least, let’s try”. Abraham and Sarah had to take corresponding action because as far as I’m aware there’s been only one virgin birth recorded in history.

Beloved, could you be waiting on God when He’s waiting on you to take an act of faith? Yes, things may seem dead or look like it’s not going to work but… like our feature text says… faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:17 NKJV)

So, why not make a decision to act on that thing that God has put in your heart? And as you do so, I pray that the Lord returns to you at the appointed time with a fulfilment of His promise.

…Truth, righteousness, peace, FAITH, and salvation are more than words. LEARN HOW TO APPLY THEM. You’ll need them throughout your life… (Ephesians 6:13-18 MSG).

Beloved, taking up the SHIELD OF FAITH is another armour of God you can use to fight against the enemy and this is slightly different from the others because it involves taking up rather than putting on. We are told… ABOVE ALL, taking the SHIELD OF FAITH with which you will be able to QUENCH ALL THE FIERY DARTS of the wicked one (Ephesians 6:16 NKJV).

This is an additional layer of protection and ABOVE ALL suggests that the SHIELD OF FAITH is very important because FIERY DARTS can only reach the body if the shield is not held up to block them. I read that the Roman soldiers shield was very large and covered with leather, which when soaked in water was used to put out flame-tipped arrows.

So, what are the FIERY DARTS of the wicked one? Well, they range from fear, doubt, worry, to temptations… but we must take up our shield of faith to QUENCH the flames just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego had great faith in God to save them in the FIERY furnace.

Beloved, you must always trust that the Lord would show up in times of trouble. If you can build up your faith, then those FIERY DARTS of fear, doubt, worry to temptations would be extinguished by the time they hit your SHIELD OF FAITH.

However, Faith tries your PATIENCE and that’s what most of us need to work on. Someone said “waiting on God is actually God giving you time to grow stronger in faith”. So true! I’ve noticed that while waiting on God, He will at intervals reassure you that He will come through for you. It’s then up to you to believe Him or not. This is a big battle because the enemy would do everything to paint a picture that causes you to worry, fear and doubt.

The life of Abraham, our father of faith is one we can learn from. How did he develop faith in God to the extent that he did not question God when God tested him by asking him to sacrifice Isaac, the son he loved so much?

In his previous trial of faith, he and wifey made a mistake. They listened to the devil who said it’s never going to happen now that you are both very old but the second time around, with the Isaac test, he had stronger faith to say “back off satan. I’m not listening to any more of your lies”.

Beloved, Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, GOD WAS ABLE to bring him back to life again… (Hebrews 11:19 NLT)

Abraham’s reasoning shows he had grown stronger in faith. You too need to start reasoning like Abraham. GOD IS INDEED ABLE TO DO THE IMPOSSIBLE and Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see (Hebrews 11:1 NLT) so today, I pray that you hold up this confidence to quench every FIERY DARTS OF fear, doubt, worry and temptations…

Then the angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a cloud]; for that reason the holy (pure, sinless) Child shall be called the Son of God. And listen, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. For with God nothing [is or ever] shall be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD.” And the angel left her (Luke 1:35-38 AMP).

Beloved, when it comes to God, there are some things that would never make sense to the human mind and that’s why the Christian faith is based on believing God. When the angel of God visited Mary, the mother of Jesus and told her that as a virgin she would become pregnant, can you imagine what would have happened if she had allowed herself to really try and reason it out?

If only this is our unshakable response to many of the things God tells us, we would see great things happen. However, most times, we tend to believe for a second or so until satan comes like a thief and snatches the word from us through doubt and reasoning.

The great thing about this text is that God did not just leave Mary with His word, He also left her with somebody else’s testimony. The Message translation says… The angel answered “… did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months pregnant! … Everyone thought she couldn’t have a baby because she had passed child bearing age but it’s not about what you or anyone thinks. It’s about what God has done, what He can and says He would do. And I believe the Lord was also saying… Yes, I did that but don’t even limit Me to that because I am able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you ask or think.

Beloved, what has the Lord told you that you’re still struggling with understanding how it would happen? Well don’t lose another night’s sleep. Rather, until it happens, let this be your watchword… MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD

Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do SUPERABUNDANTLY more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20 AMP)… MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD

And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”‎ ‎And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”(Mathew 14:28-31 NKJV)

Beloved, Have you ever found yourself in a position where you hear or see something that greatly motivates and inspires you to do something and so you take the first step but then reality of the situation starts to set in and you start to think “what am I doing?”

This must have been what happened to Peter. This incident happened just after Jesus fed the crowd with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes ‎(Mathew 14:15-21) and I’m sure when ‎Peter said… “command me to come to You”, in addition to seeing Jesus walk on water, the buzz from him seeing Jesus feed the multitude with so little was one of the things that inspired and prompted him to quickly act out in faith. If anything, he still had the leftovers that Jesus instructed them to carry with them. Peter was still on a high; full of faith and then when he saw Jesus walking on water, he was like… ‘wow, I can do that’… ‎but then that ‘wow’ soon became “what on earth do I think I’m doing?”

It’s always like that with us. We hear a great message or see God act miraculously in someone else’s life and we get really encouraged that we step out in faith but then when the excitement dies down, we are like… “oh boy, what am I really doing?” That’s when we start to faint.

Beloved, Peter had the faith to step out onto the water at Jesus’ command but not the faith to continue walking. He no longer heard the word of the Lord. Now he saw the storm and quickly began to sink but in such situations, what we need to do is to continue in the same faith we started with because it is Jesus that is the object of our faith and my experience has taught me that you can’t for a second afford to take your eyes off Jesus. As far as you keep focusing on Him beckoning you to come, you can’t sink.

Do you need to continue in faith? Keep… looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith… (Hebrews 12:2 NKJV)‎. He started it for you and He would finish it for you.

This is what the Lord says… The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it… (Zechariah 4:9 NIV)

And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus (Matthew 14:28-29 AMPC).

Beloved, Peter taking the bold move to step out of the boat and walk on water is a well-known Bible story. We are told that while Jesus was alone praying, His disciples faced a storm. After a while Jesus came to their rescue but because Jesus came in a way they didn’t expect, they were afraid… Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, It is a ghost! And they screamed out with fright (Matthew 14:25-26 AMPC).

They were afraid; AFRAID OF THE PROBLEM… AFRAID OF THE SOLUTION. Is this you right now? So, what is one to do? Well, Peter happened to be the brave one out of the lot. Once he was convinced that it was Jesus calling him, with his eyes fixed on Jesus, he stepped out to try what others would have termed impossible. Peter took a brave step towards the call of Jesus and that’s what many are still afraid to do today.

Beloved, as far as you have confirmed that it’s Jesus calling you, you ought to take that bold step. No more excuses! What Peter did was to focus on Jesus Christ through whom he could do all things. However, he does not leave us without a lesson. He teaches us what happens when we take our eyes off Jesus and look to self; taking stock of our weaknesses, inabilities, difficulties, limitations and listening to negativity from others. We are told that… when he saw the wind, HE WAS AFRAID and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” He said, “WHY DID YOU DOUBT?” (Matthew 14:30-31 NIV)

Beloved, I don’t think this needs any special revelation. Jesus got right to the bottom of the problem… WHY DID YOU DOUBT? Peter nearly drowned because of fear. The Message translation says… HE LOST HIS NERVE AND STARTED TO SINK… Peter started strong but somewhere along the line, he started to listen to the ‘what if’s’ of life.

So, what is Jesus saying to you today? Could He be saying… “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Matthew 14:27). Do not doubt! Keep your eyes on ME all the time. I started it and I would finish it. All you need to do is get out of the boat and walk. And even if you feel you are about to sink, I would reach out and grab your hand and catch you.

Beloved, Fear not… For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

THE LORD KEPT HIS WORD and did for Sarah exactly what He had promised. She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. THIS HAPPENED AT JUST THE TIME GOD HAD SAID IT WOULD (Genesis 21:1-2 NLT)

Beloved, have you ever received a prophecy and expected it to happen straight away? Well, one thing I have realised is that when you receive a prophecy, it usually comes to let you know what is to come but not necessarily when it would happen. It is so you have something to look forward to. It is also so you have something to hold on to when the test and trials come because they would surely come.
The Lord says…. For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11-12 NLT).

Beloved… the Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed… (Genesis 12:1-4 NLT)

So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed… and I can just imagine that he thought that what the Lord had promised would happened straight away but boy, was he wrong. We know the story. That was just the beginning of Abrahams journey of faith and at pivotal moments, the Lord appeared to Abraham to let him know that the deal is still on, don’t give up. We are told that… When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.” (Genesis 17:1-2 NLT)

Beloved, our feature text lets us know that… The Lord kept His word and did for Sarah (Abrahams wife) exactly what he had promised… This happened at just the time God had said it would… This should let us know that the Lord has a perfect timing for when things would be fulfilled and it is according to His plan not yours. He says… I know the plans I have for you…

So, what are you meant to do in the meantime? Well, don’t go ahead and create your own Ishmael… For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry (Habakkuk 2:3 NKJV).

“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN (Matthew 18:19-22 NKJV).

Beloved, some of us need to forgive and it’s for your own good because unforgiveness is not something you want to carry in to 2016. Do you want your prayers answered? When Jesus was teaching how to pray, He said we should ask the Lord to… forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven (left, remitted, and let go of the debts, and have given up resentment against) our debtors… (Matthew 6:12 AMPC).

What we are simply saying here is that God should treat us in the same way we treat others. We see this happen in the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21-35)

One of the greatest lessons I learnt about unforgiveness is that most times we don’t want to forgive because we think we are letting people of the hook not realising that we are the ones that are hooked. We’ve heard the saying that unforgiveness is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die.

Beloved, apart from forgiving people, some of us need to forgive ourselves. As far as you have truly repented and have asked for forgiveness, God has forgiven you so stop beating yourself up about it and move on.

And this may sound strange and though He doesn’t need our forgiveness, some of us need to settle our grudges with God. Some of us need to humbly come before His throne and settle the issues you have with Him. Again, this may sound strange to some but I for one went through a phase where I blamed God for allowing certain things to happen or not answering some of the things I had been praying for years. The devil painted a picture in my mind that the Lord was not on my side but the devil is a liar. I did exactly what I am saying here and God restored me and reassured me that He is the only One that is really on my side.

Beloved, Jesus said… and if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.” And the apostles said to the Lord, “INCREASE OUR FAITH.” (Luke 17:4-5 NKJV)

INCREASE OUR FAITH… In dealing with unforgiveness, I personally had to work on believing that God would help take care of the situation because the scars would still be there for you to see. People say forgive but don’t forget… I say just ask God to INCREASE YOUR FAITH in Him that He would make everything okay… that you would stop hurting… that you would find that peace… that you would find real joy.

Simon, Simon (Peter), listen! SATAN HAS ASKED EXCESSIVELY THAT [ALL OF] YOU BE GIVEN UP TO HIM [OUT OF THE POWER AND KEEPING OF GOD], THAT HE MIGHT SIFT [ALL OF] YOU LIKE GRAIN, But I have prayed especially for you [Peter], that your [own] faith may not fail; and when you yourself have turned again, strengthen and establish your brethren (Luke 22:31-32 AMPC).

Beloved, I was looking at the word ‘sift’ that Jesus uses in our feature text and one definition says it’s an “inward agitation to try one’s faith to the verge of overthrow”. Also, I remember someone saying satan’s intention is to disintegrate your faith. That word DISINTEGRATE hit me hard. I thought of all the things I’ve had to fight against and you know what? That’s what the devil has been trying to do…DISINTEGRATE my faith.

I looked up the word ‘DISINTEGRATE’ and it is to; break into parts or components or lose cohesion or unity. Some examples given include to become powder or dust; make into a powder by breaking up or cause to become dust; become undone; crumble, fall or break apart into fragments; crash – break violently or noisily; to smash…

Beloved, that’s what satan wants to do to you. That’s the plan of the enemy – to crush your faith in to power or dust that it becomes almost impossible to put it back again and this is not a joke. If in doubt ask Job and some of the people I know about.

Prayer is needed to stand firm. I was speaking to someone who told me something along the lines of; 2015 was so difficult that we didn’t think that 2016 could get any worse so next year, I’ve told my church that we are going in just holding on to the word of God. That’s all I can promise…

Simon (Peter) thought he could handle things by his own strength. He didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about. He said… Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death. But Jesus said, I tell you, Peter, before a [single] cock shall crow this day, you will three times [utterly] deny that you know Me (Luke 22:33-34 AMPC). The Message translation says… Jesus said, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, Peter, but before the rooster crows you will have three times denied that you know me.”

Peter’s case was the case of… Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall (1 Corinthians 10:12 NKJV)

Beloved, we all need to pray fervently that OUR FAITH DOES NOT FAIL us when facing real hard times. The message translation says… Simon, I’ve prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start.”

It is my prayer that you stand firm and don’t faint because your testimony will one day strengthen and establish your brethren and help them with a fresh start.

03. December 2016 · Comments Off on ‏‏DEALING WITH UNSPOKEN FEAR · Categories: Faith, Fear, Jesus Christ, Trusting God

What I always feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true (Job 3:25 NLT).

Beloved, a lot of us have amazing faith for a lot of things but with many of us, there are some secret fears that we carry on the inside that we dread so much. The funny thing is that it’s not what others can perceive. To most people, you’ve got it all together. Take the case of Job. I mean, everybody knew him as one who… was honest inside and out, a man of his word, who was totally devoted to God and hated evil with a passion (Job 1:1 MSG). He was a perfect role model. He served God with all his heart and went to church regularly but if you believe in this God the way you say you do, who would have ever thought that he harboured any kind of fear?

I remember that there were some things that I never ever imagined I would every experience. Those were my untouchable areas and I remember telling God not to even go there. Leave this area alone. Trials can come in this or that area but not that because I won’t be able to survive it. However, after shaking all the shakeable in my life, I remember someone saying “now that you’ve experienced your worst fears and you’ve seen that it didn’t kill you, you can now move on with your relationship with God”. Another person said “aren’t you still standing?”

Hmmm… Beloved, out of nowhere Job admitted that… What I always feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true… Who knows, maybe if he didn’t come face to face with his fears, it would have stayed with him for the rest of his life and at times, that’s even worse torture than what you are dreading.

No one wants anything negative to happen but if you entertain fear, you attract exactly that. Also, those things we fear stand as hurdles in our relationship with God. Job knew fear and perhaps the Lord was saying to Job… You have known this fear for so long, now it’s really time to get to know Me. Hence the reason Job said… “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You (Job 42:5 NIV). He had to confront those fears to move to another level with God.

Beloved, don’t let fear rule/ruin your life… For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

The word used for fear; deilós (“fearful of losses”) refers to an excessive fear (dread) of “losing,” causing someone to be fainthearted (cowardly) hence, to fall short in following Christ as Lord.

Beloved, I remember someone saying that when you come under the light, it highlights or reveals many hidden things. Everything is laid bare before the Lord so perhaps it’s time to deal with that unspoken fear.

You come to me carrying a sword and spear and javelin as your weapons, but I come armed with the name of the Eternal One, the Commander of heavenly armies, the True God of the armies of Israel, the One you have insulted (1 Samuel 17:45 Voice).

Beloved, when studying the story of David and Goliath, one thing I’ve come to realise is that the story isn’t so much about David and Goliath but about the contrast between David, the to-be king of Israel and Saul, the current king of Israel at the time. This is a story about how differently they handled the threat of Goliath. It is about the negative example of Saul, the type of king the people asked for that is filled with lack of trust in God, fear, timidity and avoidance of responsibility and the contrasted positive example of David, the type of king that God wanted which is filled with total reliance on God and carrying out the will of God. This is why… after removing Saul, He made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART; HE WILL DO EVERYTHING I WANT HIM TO DO.’ (Acts 13:22 NIV)

This brings me to the question… which one are you? Are you David or are you Saul? Let me make it easier for you. Are you totally reliant on God and doing His will? If you are, then you are not afraid of any obstacle that comes your way. You are not timid and won’t run away from any responsibility the Lord has entrusted you to do. YOU WOULD DO EVERYTHING THE LORD WANTS YOU TO DO. This is because you are 100 per cent confident that the Lord is the one that would do it and that you would overcome any obstacle IN THE NAME OF THE LORD ALMIGHTY.

On the other hand, are you filled with fear? Are you more reliant on your own abilities and resources than on the Lord? That is, immediately you are confronted with an obstacle, you shrink back and go into hiding because you see it as bigger than you. Or when the Lord gives you an assignment, you immediately look to your resources and think there’s no way that’s possible. You tend to look to the people around you for help rather than call on THE NAME OF THE LORD ALMIGHTY. And worse of all, you rather please people than please God.

Beloved, which one are you really? David or Saul? ARE YOU TACKLING obstacle WITH OR WITHOUT GOD?

Some trust in and boast of chariots and some of horses, BUT WE WILL TRUST IN AND BOAST OF THE NAME OF THE LORD OUR GOD (Psalm 20:7 AMPC). Do you really believe you can do everything through Christ, who gives you strength (Philippians 4:13)?
