Let love of your fellow believers continue. Do not neglect to extend hospitality to strangers [especially among the family of believers—being friendly, cordial, and gracious, sharing the comforts of your home and doing your part generously], for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:1-2 AMP).

Beloved, as I was reading our feature text, ‘a closed heart’ was the phrase that was impressed in my spirit. So, what is a closed heart? A closed heart is a heart that has been closed up or hardened just because it’s been hurt or disappointed so many times and so, to guard the heart, its been closed up just to make sure it doesn’t ever get hurt again. There are some people that are generous to a fault and no doubt, they have been disappointed and taken advantage of. As a result, they’ve made the decision that “no more”. I’m not going to open up my heart or my house to anybody for them to take advantage of. Some say; once beaten twice shy. However, the Bible says… guard your heart… (Proverbs 4:23 NIV) and not close your heart. The Message translation says… Keep vigilant watch over your heart and not close it up so no one can get in neither can you get out.

Our feature text lets us know the danger of a closed heart; Let love of your fellow believers continue because you never know when you may entertain angels that have been sent to minister to you.

Beloved, perhaps, it’s not people that have hurt you but it’s just that you are not seeing any results. The Lord says… Let us not grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in (Galatians 6:9 AMP). However, you feel the Lord has not made good on His promise. When is this proper time going to be? As a result, you are now in preservation mode; what I have is for me and my family alone.

I’m reminded of Abraham. We are told that… One day Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground (Genesis 18:1-2 NLT).

Abraham showed them great hospitality and then just as they were about to leave… one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!” (Genesis 18:10 NLT).

Beloved, who knows… what if Abraham did not show them hospitality? What if after so many years of waiting on the Lord, Abraham had a closed heart?

What am I trying to say? Let’s be mindful of how we treat the people that come our way. You never know if that person is sent by God.

An inheritance obtained too early in life is not a blessing in the end (Proverbs 20:21 NLT).

Beloved, yesterday I watched the most touching, real-life scene of a young pastor who had gone seriously astray, return back to his spiritual Father who embraced him back with a great outpour of love. I cried like I personally knew him but it got me thinking about the prodigal son and our feature text. There are times when the blessings and open downs we desire would be the end of us if we are not mature enough to handle it.

Beloved, in this story of the prodigal son, we are told that the younger son… said to his father, Father, give me the part of the property that falls [to me]. And he divided the estate between them. And not many days after that, the younger son gathered up all that he had and journeyed into a distant country, and there he wasted his fortune in reckless and loose [from restraint] living (Luke 15:13 AMPC).

The younger sons action reveals his immaturity hence the reason he could act the way he did and the question is; “Why would a young son want to leave his father’s house?” Well, he couldn’t wait until he was mature enough. He didn’t want to be restrained. The word ‘Restraint’ means ‘restriction’; a way of limiting, controlling or stopping something. So, perhaps, he didn’t like the discipline that came with living in the house because… a father disciplines whom he loves (Hebrews 12:6).

He didn’t like to work on his character and I can only just imagine that he was like, “just give me my inheritance and don’t tell me how to live my life”. He didn’t want to sit at His Father’s feet to learn and grow. He was only interested in his inheritance. Unfortunately, with that kind of mind-set, the devil was able to lure him away and he eventually left. He travelled to a DISTANT country but what was the end result? He lost it all.

Beloved, I remember someone saying that while we are mostly interested in the destination, God is interested in the things we learn along the way and I have previously written about these things being a transformation of our character and so on because like someone else said, “Charisma will get you to the door but it is good character that would keep you there”.

The beauty of this story however, is that he had a change of heart and came back to his father who received him with open hands. The Bible says… “he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him (Luke 15:20 NLT). He didn’t have to go through that experience though.

Beloved, the Bible says… Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s character (Psalm 105:19 NLT). Are you too early for your inheritance?

Moses gave the men these instructions as he sent them out to explore the land “… See what the land is like, and find out whether the people living there are strong or weak, few or many… DO YOUR BEST TO BRING BACK SAMPLES OF THE CROPS YOU SEE…” (Numbers 13:17-20 NLT)

Beloved, one of the people we must try to avoid as the Lord leads us towards His promises are those that can only see problems. This was the case of the 10 spies in our feature text. Moses sent them to explore the Promised Land of Canaan. So, off they went but what did they see?

This was their report to Moses: “We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country- a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces. BUT the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there… (Numbers 13:27-28)

Their focus was on the problem but for one man, Caleb. They obviously didn’t have the same vision… “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!” But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!” So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge.” We even saw giants there… NEXT TO THEM WE FELT LIKE GRASSHOPPERS, AND THAT’S WHAT THEY THOUGHT, TOO!” (Numbers 13:30-32)

GRASSHOPPERS!!! Is that what they told you? How were you able to bring back some of the kind of fruit the land produces then? How small do you see yourself?

Unfortunately, their bad report discouraged a whole community causing them to give up (Numbers 14:1). Joshua and Caleb tried to direct their focus to the Lord… They said to all the people of Israel, “The land we traveled through and explored is a wonderful land! And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us… don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but THE LORD IS WITH US! Don’t be afraid of them!” (Numbers 14:7-9). It didn’t work. They even tried to stone them and God wasn’t pleased. Though Moses tried to plead for them, the damage had already been done. The Lord said none of them will see the Promised Land except for Joshua and Caleb who had a different attitude (Numbers 14:20-24).

Beloved, are you surrounded by people that always see why things won’t work? How many times have you given up on something because they discouraged you? Isn’t it time to get rid of the crowd and only hold on to your ‘Joshua and Caleb’?

Asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom[a] and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance (Ephesians 1:17-18 AMPC)

Beloved, how’s your ability to see? Meditating on the story of the time the Israelites under the leadership‎ of Joshua matched round the wall of Jericho to bring the walls down, you would find that the very first thing the Lord told them to do even before they matched round the wall of Jericho was to SEE! The Bible says… And the Lord said to Joshua: “SEE! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor (Joshua 6:2 NKJV).

This is the same thing the Lord told Abraham… And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are – northward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you SEE I give to you and your descendants forever (Genesis 13:14-15 NKJV).

Beloved, the Lord would always address your ability to SEE for so it’s important that you get rid of everything and everyone that blocks your vision. Abraham had to get rid of Lot whose name means veil. I’m also thinking of the Prophet Isaiah who said… It was in the year King Uzziah died that I SAW the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of His robe filled the Temple ‎(Isaiah 6:1 NLT).‎

I was meditating on who Uzziah‎ represented. He represents one that became very proud after he became very powerful (2 Chronicles 26: 16) and I can just imagine that with such a person as your leader, they would want you to always come through them. They have to be the one to pray for you, hear from God for you, read the Bible for you etc. You have no direct relationship with the Lord. They would even want to exalt themselves above the Lord in your life but it was when Uzziah died that Isaiah saw the Lord. ‎‎

Beloved, Apostle Paul in our feature text said was praying for our ability to see the plans the Lord on another level. This is a deep spiritual call because like the Bible says… ‎ “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.” But it was to us that God revealed these things BY HIS SPIRIT. For His Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us (1 Corinthians 2:9-12 NLT).

Beloved, the Israelites had to SEE before they conquered. Have you the ability to see beyond what you are currently seeing?

Abraham was a hundred years old when Isaac was born. And Sarah said, God has made me to laugh; all who hear will laugh with me. And she said, WHO WOULD HAVE SAID to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children at the breast? For I have borne him a son in his old age! (Genesis 21:5-7 AMPC)

Beloved, when we read the Bible stories, we must conclude that there’s no case that the Lord has not already dealt with and the interesting thing is that He is an expert at acting when people have decided that this case is closed; let’s bury it.

Sarah received a miracle that shocked her and she said… WHO WOULD HAVE SAID… which simply means that despite the fact that the Lord had made a promise, everyone had concluded that the case was closed. It wasn’t something that they could ever imagine happening… yet Sarah said here I am! I’ve given the old man a son (MSG) … For Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, AT THE SET TIME GOD HAD TOLD HIM (Genesis 21:2 AMPC).

Beloved, the Bible says… You will arise and have mercy on Zion; For the time to favor her, Yes, the set time, has come (Psalm 102:13 NKJV). The Bible also says… It seemed like a dream, too good to be true, when God returned Zion’s exiles. We laughed, we sang, we couldn’t believe our good fortune. We were the talk of the nations— “God was wonderful to them!” God was wonderful to us; we are one happy people (Psalm 126:1-3 MSG).

I was sharing with my prayer partner that when the Lord says… “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV), I cannot even begin to imagine what else the Lord wants to do because like I said, that there’s no case imaginable that He hasn’t already dealt with.

Beloved, what can be greater than raising the dead back to life? What can be greater than causing a ninety something year old woman to conceive and have a child? What can be greater than all the Bible stories that the Lord is saying we’ve not seen, nor heard or dreamt of? However, God is not a man that would lie (Numbers 23:19). If He said it, then, it means that its possible for Him to do what we’ve never seen or heard of before and I volunteer myself as a recipient of what He has in mind.

Beloved, has the Lord made you a promise? Here’s something to hold on to…

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is My word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:10-11 NIV).

Why not continue to praise Him?

Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul; and all that is [deepest] within me, bless His holy name! Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits (Psalm 103:1-2 AMPC).

Beloved, I’m reminded of a time during one of our Bible studies when all I did was ask everyone in turns how their week had been so far and that kicked off an awesome time of thanksgiving that saw some rolling on the floor worshipping the Lord. It was a real time of reflecting on how faithful the Lord has been and it wasn’t about the obvious things that we usually thank God for. I even had to repent and ask for forgiveness.

A song writer once wrote: ‘Count your blessings and name them one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord has done’.

Beloved, there are times you think the Lord has bypassed you. At those times, there is indeed a tendency to say… “Lord, You haven’t come through for me!” However, it isn’t until you actually stop and start to count one by one all that He has been doing, then like the song writer said, it surprises you what the Lord has done. The reason for this is because most times, we do not recognise God’s blessings. We tend to want it one way but God gives it to us in another way and then we become like the Israelites in the wilderness when they cried out for food. The Lord rained down bread from heaven but… When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “WHAT IS IT?” FOR THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT IT WAS. Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat (Exodus 16:15 NIV).

Really? But this looks nothing like what I was expecting? Like the Israelites, are you in a position where you are saying “WHAT IS IT?” How has the Lord blessed me? Do you need to be told how?

Beloved, realise what He saved you from and wipe your tears. King David said… O my soul, bless God. From head to toe, I’ll bless His holy name! O my soul, bless God, don’t forget a single blessing! (MSG)

The fact that you are still around today is a reason to bless the Lord. And here are some more reasons:

He forgives your sins—every one.
He heals your diseases—every one.
He redeems you from hell—saves your life!
He crowns you with love and mercy—a paradise crown.
He wraps you in goodness—beauty eternal.
He renews your youth—you’re always young in His presence (Psalm 103:3-5 MSG).

Beloved, in order to position yourself to praise hard, you need to count your blessings and name them one by one and… BLESS THE LORD…DO NOT FORGET HIS BENEFITS…

Why not enter this new week with this kind of attitude and keep it up for the rest of the week?

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise early, To retire late, To eat the bread of anxious labors—For He gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep (Psalm 127:1-2 AMP).

Beloved, there are times when we have a very busy schedule that it can become overwhelming.
and we think the only way out is just to plough our way through – we think we must just keep going till things get done but this becomes at the expense of our precious sleep and our relationships including our relationship with the Lord.

This isn’t intentional. Many of us have the mind to try and make the Lord our top priority, spending ample time with Him; waiting on Him for His wisdom for direction and also resting in Him but we still find that we struggle but a while ago, I remember listening to Israel Houghton, the famous gospel artist, preach about the priority Jesus takes in our lives based on his famous song; ‘Jesus at the centre’. He said the problem with making Jesus our number one priority is that whether we like to admit it or not, thing pop up and regardless of how hard we try, we sometimes find that He drops down to number two and even further down our priority list as we get even busier.

To resolve this problem, instead of having a top priority list where Jesus is number one, he drew a circle and said we should place Jesus at the centre of it all. That way he never drops from number one position but is a part of everything we do. He demonstrated this using a wonderful illustration and I’m not sure whether I’ve explained it as well as he did but instead of having your top ten priorities listed one below the other, picture them spread around the edge of a circle and Jesus is at the centre of that circle. That way He becomes even a part of your eating and sleeping.

Also, my Study Bible notes say that “God is not against human effort but working to the exclusion of rest or to the neglect of family may be a cover up for an inability to trust God to provide for our needs. We all need adequate rest and times of spiritual refreshment. On the other hard this is not an excuse to be lazy. Be careful to maintain a balance: Work while trusting God, and also rest while trusting Him”.

Beloved, our feature text says the Lord… gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep. The message translation says… it’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know He enjoys giving rest to those He loves?

When you make the Lord your centre priority, you can go to rest knowing that He is working on your behalf and when you wake up, you find that you are refreshed and that He has put things in place which then requires less of your human effort.

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; but his mother named him Jabez, saying, “Because I gave birth to him in pain.” (1 Chronicles 4:9 AMP).

Beloved, there are people born with a bright future, however because of what their parents went through, they alter the course of their lives. For instance, we see some mothers who have suffered in the hands of men training their daughters to be bitter towards men. As a result, instead of having a successful marriage, the daughter ruins it because of how her mind has been polluted. Same with some dads, they train their sons to be hard because of what they’ve experienced and the son ends up becoming heartless… They may look hard on the outside but inside, they are surrounded by pain and they seem helpless.

Our feature text introduces us to Jabez whose mother named him after the pain she had experienced and in Hebrew culture names were important. Your name revealed some characteristic about your birth, or a hope for your future and a person would normally manifest what they were called. The Amplified Bible Classic Edition says Jabez means ‘sorrow maker’. Can you imagine what they prophesied every time they called his name?

To be honorable means to be characterized by integrity and guided by a high sense of honor but despite his decisions to remain honorable, he was surrounded by painful situations. Who knows, maybe he was always experiencing broken relationships, disappointments at work or in business or ill health. Every letter that came through the post came with bad news.

However, one day he decided enough is enough. Jabez knew he was in the position to change things because He knew a God who could bring about a change in his life… He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!” AND GOD GRANTED HIM HIS REQUEST (1 Chronicles 4:10 NLT).

He prayed to God to bless him and his handiwork and for all round protection from pain. He said God, please do not depart from me because without you I am nothing and would continue in my misery.

Beloved, Jabez was labelled with sorrow and pain but his prayer reversed the label. Today, you probably don’t think you can do anything about your situation but you are in a better position because Jesus died to set you free from every baggage. He redeemed you from the curse (Galatians 3:13); By His wounds you have been healed (1 Peter 2:24); He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).

Jesus said…You may ask me for anything in His name and He will do it (John 14:14). Why not pray Jabez’s prayer and as you do so, it is my prayer that every parental baggage is broken off your life and you become free to be the honorable person that God has called you to be.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you (Matthew 6:33 NKJV).

Beloved, we know the story of King David; how he loved to be in the presence of the Lord! Growing up, he spent a lot of time in the presence of the Lord; writing songs, praising and just worshiping God. I’m sure that’s where he learnt all his special dance moves that embarrassed the life out of his wife. But then, there was Saul. Right from the very day he felt David was a threat, he did not allow the poor boy rest. David was always running for his life until Saul and his sons died and then David was eventually anointed king over all of Israel.

David had to fight some more enemies but immediately he had some peace, there was only one thing on his mind; the presence of God. Then David again gathered all the elite troops in Israel, 30,000 in all. He led them to Baalah of Judah to bring back the ARK OF GOD, which bears the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, who is enthroned between the cherubim (2 Samuel 6:1-2 NLT).

And not just that. David’s next mission was to build a ‘house’ for the Lord to live in… When King David was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all the surrounding enemies, the king summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of God is out there in a tent!” (2 Samuel 7:1-2 NLT)

The Lord had to stop him. “David, are you the one to build a house for me to live in?

Beloved, David was the King of all of Israel, but his heart’s desire was seeking after the things of God first. Shouldn’t this be the case for us too? That is, like our feature text says to… seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33).

What things? Oh… The Ark of the Lord came with blessings. We know David ran into some problems when transporting the Ark so out of fear he left it with Obed-edom… but then King David was told, “The Lord has blessed Obed-edom’s household and everything he has because of the Ark of God”. So David went there and brought the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with a great celebration (2 Samuel 7:1-2 NLT). GIVE ME BACK WHAT BELONGS TO ME!

Beloved, we tend to get our priorities mixed up and run after the very things that should be running after us. The Bible says… And all these blessings shall come upon you and OVERTAKE you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God (Deuteronomy 28:2 AMP).

Beloved, today, Jesus is saying “seek Me first and see what will follow”. Are you going to heed to His voice?

And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I WOULD MOREOVER HAVE GIVEN UNTO THEE SUCH AND SUCH THINGS. Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? (2 Samuel 12:8-9 KJV)

Beloved, on Sunday, I listened to a message where the preacher focused on this line and since then, I couldn’t shake it off. Our feature text is about David who had an adulterous affair with Uriah’s wife and then killed him to cover up his mess. However, the Lord was so disappointed in him; “I gave you everything a man could ever ask for and if that was not enough, all you should have done was say so and I would have given unto thee such and such things…”

So, what is ‘such and such things?’ The New Living Translation says… I would have given you much, much more. The Message Translation says… And if that hadn’t been enough, I’d have gladly thrown in much more.

Beloved, this tells me that the Lord doesn’t have a problem blessing you likesome of us religious people think. All He asks is that He has our hearts. The Bible says… For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this; therefore, from now on you will have wars.” (2 Chronicles 16:9 AMP)

So, the Lord did His search and He found David and… of him He testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart [conforming to My will and purposes], who will do all My will.’ (Acts 13:22 AMP)

However, we now hear the Lord say… Why have you treated the word of God with brazen contempt, doing this great evil? You murdered Uriah the Hittite, then took his wife as your wife. Worse, you killed him with an Ammonite sword! And now, because you treated God with such contempt and took Uriah the Hittite’s wife as your wife, killing and murder will continually plague your family (2 Samuel 12:8-9 MSG).

Beloved, this must have been very disappointing for the Lord and it sure spoke volumes to me to the point where I had to say… Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalm 139:23-24 NLT).

Beloved, the blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22 NLT). So, let’s submit our hearts to Him, cut out the evil, the wickedness, the greed, the covetousness, the competitiveness, the wrong motives, the disobedience, the idolatry etc. and go after Him wholeheartedly so we can find out what His such and such things are
