Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, YET I WILL REJOICE IN THE LORD! I WILL BE JOYFUL IN THE GOD OF MY SALVATION! (Habakkuk 3:17-18 NLT)

Beloved, the saying that ‘HAPPINESS IS BASED ON THE THINGS HAPPENING AROUND YOU’ suggests that you can only be happy when conditions are favourable. So one minute you could be happy but the next you could be sad. Joy, on the other hand isn’t based on what’s happening around you. As Christians, this is based on the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

Apostle Paul should serve as an example for us. Physically confined behind the prison walls, he proclaims… REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS. AGAIN I WILL SAY, REJOICE! (Philippians 4:4 NKJV). How free could he have been? If you ask me, I would say freer than most of us on the outside. Here’s a man writing from prison to people not in prison asking them to REJOICE. The New Living Translation says… ALWAYS BE FULL OF JOY IN THE LORD. I SAY IT AGAIN—REJOICE!… The Message Translation says… CELEBRATE GOD ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. I MEAN, REVEL IN HIM!

Apostle Paul did not focus on his past nor present situation. He said… I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead (Philippians 3:13)

He learnt how to be CONTENT AND CONFIDENT IN CHRIST. He said… I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have LEARNED THE SECRET of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength (Philippians 4:12-13 NLT).

Beloved, Apostle Paul advises that you should focus on Christ and not on the struggles you are facing. You are meant to REPLACE WORRYING WITH PRAYER AND THANKSGIVING. He says… Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7 NLT).

He also advises that you should…Fix your thoughts on what is TRUE, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8 NLT) and not on the FACTS of your situation.

Beloved, what are you facing that has sapped the life out of you? Why not locate your joy in the Lord? Focus on Jesus and He will anoint you by pouring out the oil of joy until it overflows.

…[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work] (Hebrews 12:2 AMP).

Beloved, this is for those who had to make some very hard decisions to endure some things rather than look for the exit route. For whatever it is that you had to go through, you did not ‘enjoy’ it but you chose to ‘endure’ it and the fulfilment of this Scripture would not be complete if you just stop at you enduring the cross but there was a reason Jesus endured the cross, disregarding the shame and once that reason was accomplished, He got elevated big time.

Our feature text talks about focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of our faith because He is the One that led the way for us to follow and I’m reminded of what He told Peter when… Peter started saying to Him, “Look, we have given up everything and followed You [becoming Your disciples and accepting You as Teacher and Lord].” Jesus said, “I ASSURE YOU and most solemnly say to you, there is no one who has given up a house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, WHO WILL NOT RECEIVE A HUNDRED TIMES AS MUCH NOW IN THE PRESENT AGE—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms—along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life (Mark 10:28-30 AMP).

…WHO WILL NOT RECEIVE A HUNDRED TIMES AS MUCH NOW IN THE PRESENT AGE…

Beloved, Jesus told Peter… I ASSURE YOU… and we know that He is not a man that would lie or change His mind (Numbers 23:19), so this is not the time to lose all hope and be disappointed… For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance (Hebrews 6:10-12 NLT).

Beloved, be expectant! Your bundle of joy is on its way…

For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘PLANS FOR PEACE and WELL-BEING and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11 AMP).

PLANS FOR PEACE…

Beloved, from our feature text, every plan that comes from God ought to give you peace no matter how crazy it may sound at first. Anything short of that peace may not from God.

At this point, I am thinking of Mary the mother of Jesus whom till date must have received the most confusing plan ever given to mankind, yet instead of losing sleep over it, she pondered over it for a short while, asked her most important question and after receiving an answer that could be seen as even more confusing… Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel left her (Luke 1:38 AMP).

Beloved, that was it. God’s plan should come with peace and assurance even when it doesn’t exactly make sense. The key is to diligently seek the Lord for how to accomplish that plan.

The Lord says… Then you will call on Me and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear [your voice] and I will listen to you. Then [with a deep longing] you will seek Me and require Me [as a vital necessity] and [you will] find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ says the Lord… (Jeremiah 29:12-14 AMP)

PLANS FOR WELL-BEING…

Well-being talks of your general health including your mental well-being. Are you sleeping well? Are you living stress-free? Are you eating well?

The Lord says… Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers (3 John 2 NKJV). That’s another plan the Lord has for you. Your soul talks about your mind, your emotions etc. and if they are not in line with what the Lord plans for you which should ultimately bring you peace, then something is wrong somewhere.

Beloved, when we remove the Lord from the equation and embark on our own plans, then things start to fall apart and we fall apart with them but the Bible says… Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise early, to retire late, to eat the bread of anxious labors— For He gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep (Psalm 127:1-2 AMP).

Beloved, this is God’s plan for you and He says… Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV).

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty COME TO ME and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, RIVERS OF LIVING WATER WILL FLOW FROM WITHIN THEM.” BY THIS HE MEANT THE SPIRIT… (John 7:37-39 NIV).

Beloved, most times there’s always the tendency to reach out to other things to fulfil our desires and needs but we often fail to realise what we carry on the inside. The KJV of our feature text says… OUT OF HIS BELLY SHALL FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER. This is what Jesus promised us and BY THIS HE MEANT THE SPIRIT. Before Jesus was crucified, He said… I will ask the Father, and He will give you another COMFORTER (COUNSELOR, HELPER, INTERCESSOR, ADVOCATE, STRENGTHENER, AND STANDBY), that He may remain with you forever— The Spirit of Truth… you know and recognize Him, FOR HE LIVES WITH YOU [CONSTANTLY] AND WILL BE IN YOU (John 14:16-17 AMP).

So, what’s inside of you?

A COMFORTER is someone that comforts, eases, reliefs and relaxes you. A COMFORTER is one that helps you to feel less worried, upset or frightened. Most times, people would reach out to various things to get this comfort and I’m not about to list them but you know what you resort to. For me it’s mostly food. I’ve always got the tendency to turn to food to find some sort of satisfaction when I’m feeling down but we know the result of that; momentary satisfaction followed by a sense of guilt and a whole load of health-related problems… it’s not always the devil responsible for those health problems you know.

Beloved, it’s interesting when you do a Google search for COMFORTER that one of the first things you would see is a special type of blanket (quilts or duvets), filled with insulative material that gives you warmth. It is mainly used in cold countries and if you live in one, you know its value. Imagine that wrapped around you? Most times when it gets very cold, you can’t wait to get home and get under your duvet. But not just that, at times when you feel down, you just want to crawl in bed and with the lights off, cover yourself up from head to toe with your duvet, hoping that it would all go away and while it may help for a while, you can’t lie there forever.

However, everything you are looking for to give you relief is inside of you; OUT OF YOUR BELLY; which means you exchange worldly comfort, peace and joy for what has already been deposited inside of you. All you need to do is PUT YOUR HAND ON YOUR BELLY and say… IT’S IN ME… Holy Spirit… I need the kind of comfort that only You can provide.

The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows] (John 10:10 AMP).

Beloved, “when the Holy Spirit fills us, we see that this world’s seductive attractions are only cheap substitutes for what God has to offer”.

This is such a profound statement. I read it in my study Bible and felt it was worth underlining. One of the sure signs that you are really filled with the Holy Spirit and have allowed Him to take centre stage in your life is when you allow Him to lead you to all truth including the fact that this world’s seductive attractions are only cheap substitutes for what God has to offer.

I’m thinking of the time when Jesus changed water into wine during the Wedding at Cana… When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” (John 2:9-10 NLT)

Beloved, the funny thing about this story is that they probably thought they were having a blast with what they had before but had the wine not run out, they wouldn’t have known there was something better on offer. Could this be the reason why the Lord sometimes allows us to run out of the things we look to for satisfaction?

Also, when Jesus arrived on the scene, He did not come to stop the celebration. Rather, He gave them something better to celebrate with. In the same way, Jesus did not come to take away your life like most people think and therefore resist Him. Rather, our feature text says He came to give us an abundantly life. The Message translation says… I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.

Beloved, do you know that you can’t live an abundant life on cheap substitutes? As we end 2016 and approach the New Year, why not do a stock take of your life and see if there are areas where you are trying to survive on cheap substitutes. Where is your joy coming from? Where is your peace coming from? Where is the thing that gives you fulfilment and satisfaction coming from? Are you really satisfied?

“Behold, God, my salvation! I will trust and not be afraid, For the Lord God is my strength and song; Yes, He has become my salvation.” Therefore with joy you will draw water from the springs of salvation (Isaiah 12:2-3 AMP).

Beloved, on monday, we lost an old classmate of ours. He was chatting with us in our WhatsApp group in the morning only to hear that he was dead hours later. The news of his passing made everyone very sad. He only got married 5 months ago, and we were all celebrating with him only to hear that he was now dead. It really made every one sad. It also made everyone reflect which made me become very low in spirit just thinking back at all the storms of life and I just couldn’t shake it off but then, I became even more annoyed that I found myself in that mood. Why on earth am I back here again? Why am I feeling like this? However, it was then that our feature text came to mind. I felt the Lord was trying to tell me that the enemy wants to stop your flow. Off course, it made sense. If it is with joy that we draw water from the wells of salvation, then it makes perfect sense that the enemy would always want to do things that would steal that joy so you have nothing to draw with.

The Voice translation says… With joy in each step, you will drink deeply from the springs of salvation… It makes perfect sense that the enemy would want to try and do things that would prevent you from taking those steps and that’s why we have to be intentional and do everything to fight for our joy. Apostle Paul said… Rejoice in the Lord always. AGAIN I WILL SAY, REJOICE! (Philippians 4:4 NKJV). You have to be reminded of this.

But how do you do this in such a case? Well, Apostle Paul also said… whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, THINK CONTINUALLY ON THESE THINGS [CENTER YOUR MIND ON THEM, AND IMPLANT THEM IN YOUR HEART] (Philippians 4:8 AMP).

It means rather than think of the sad moments, you must choose to center your mind on the good ones you had and implant them in your heart. We are told that we must… Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8 NLT).

Beloved, this thief wants to steal your joy so you have got to fight for it. Choose to think on the fun memories. The Voice translation says… Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy.

After tasting the water that had become wine, the headwaiter couldn’t figure out where such wine came from (even though the servants knew), and he called over the bridegroom in amazement. This wine is delectable. Why would you save the most exquisite fruit of the vine? A host would generally serve the good wine first and, when his inebriated guests don’t notice or care, he would serve the inferior wine. YOU HAVE HELD BACK THE BEST FOR LAST (John 2:9-10 Voice)

“When the Holy Spirit fills us, we see that this world’s seductive attractions are only CHEAP SUBSTITUTES for what God has to offer”.

Beloved, the above is such a profound statement that I read in one of my study Bible notes that I felt was worth underlining. One of the sure signs that you are really filled with the Holy Spirit and have allowed Him to take centre stage in your life is when you allow Him to lead you to all truth including the fact that… this world’s seductive attractions are only cheap substitutes for what God has to offer.

We know the story in our feature text about how Jesus changed water into wine during the Wedding at Cana. This was Jesus first miracle and the funny thing about this story is that they all probably thought that they were having a blast with what they had before but had the wine not run out, they wouldn’t have known there was something better on offer. Could this be the reason why the Lord sometimes allows us to run out of the things we look to for satisfaction? That job? That relationship? That… ? You fill in the gap.

Beloved, the other thing to highlight about this story is that when Jesus arrived on the scene, He did not come to stop the celebration. Rather, what He did was give them something better to celebrate with. In the same way, Jesus did not come to take away your life like most people think and therefore resist what He is trying to do in your life. Where is that thing that gives you fulfilment and satisfaction coming from? Are you really satisfied? The Lord has the very best in mind for you but perhaps there are so many cheap substitutes in your life taking up space that you don’t have room for what He wants to give you. So, why not do a stock take of your life and see if there are areas where you are trying to survive on cheap substitutes.

29. August 2016 · Comments Off on HOW DOES JESUS HELP CARRY OUR BURDEN? · Categories: God's Plan, Grace, Jesus Christ, Joy, Peace, Relationship

Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Put My yoke upon your shoulders—it might appear heavy at first, but it is perfectly fitted to your curves. Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. When you are yoked to Me, your weary souls will find rest. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30 VOICE).

Beloved, the Bible is full of illustrations and it uses a lot of analogues and in our feature text, Jesus says… Put My yoke upon your shoulders. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a yoke is “a bar or frame that is attached to the heads or necks of two work animals (such as oxen) so that they can pull a plow or heavy load” and I found that one of the best ways to understand some of the Bible illustrations is to look for images on the web. So, for example, if you do a search for ‘Put My yoke upon your shoulders’, you would find images of two oxen tied together plowing a field, and from the image, one is able to see that the combined strength of the two animals is able to accomplish what one oxen, or two separate animals can’t. It also gives a picture of the two animals going in the same direction which talks about the unity that is needed in order to accomplish something.

So Jesus is offering you His yoke and I like how the message translation puts this text… The Message Translation says… “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

I found that for some reason, we have a way of complicating our lives. Jesus’ message is about resting in Him. Finding joy in Him. Being free from worry and anxiety. Receiving the kind of peace that the world cannot give. Living a life free of offence and bitterness. A life of Humility etc. So, why is it that many are far from His realities?

Beloved, instead of fighting everyone around you, how about… When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him (Proverbs 16:7 NKJV).

When you focus on Jesus, then you will see things with his eyes. That’s where you will find rest. When you do what He did and tells you to do, that’s Him helping you carry your burden because He releases an unexplainable grace to you. He says learn from me… [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith… (Hebrews 12:2 AMP).

Beloved, the Lord’s word for you is “My yoke is easy, and My burden is light”. In what ways do you think you can carry His yoke this week?

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, THE GARMENT OF PRAISE FOR THE SPIRIT OF HEAVINESS… (Isaiah 61:1-3 NKJV)

Beloved, have you ever been in a situation where one minute you’re happy but the next minute you’re down? It’s almost like all of a sudden, you can feel a heavy weight of despair come over you and you really can’t understand how or why you got there.

Yesterday, I received a message from someone saying they woke up with a heavy heart wondering what exactly was going on in their life. Interestingly, their countenance was different when we spoke a few days before but that’s the spirit of heaviness our feature text is talking about. The NIV says it’s… a spirit of despair while the Expanded Bible says its… the spirit of sadness [discouragement; heavy heart].

The first thing to notice here is that this is not a ‘feeling’ but a spirit sent by the enemy to cause sadness, discouragement, despair, depression etc. How else can a man like the great prophet Elijah be full of great accomplishments one minute and then the next minute you hear him saying… “I have had enough, Lord,” … “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” (1 Kings 19:4 NIV). The enemy had sent fear and intimidation his way that he immediately became so depressed.

How do you overcome it? It’s there in the text… putting on the garment of praise… You need to create an atmosphere of praise and be deliberate about your thinking… whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [FIX YOUR MINDS ON THEM] (Philippians 4:8 AMP).

Also… we use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NLT).

This involves breaking every stronghold of human reasoning that’s not in line with Gods word. You do this by meditating on what the Lord says to be true about you and not what the enemy is feeding your mind with. Why not begin to cast out any spirit of heaviness? The Spirit of the Lord God is upon you and He brings good news.

31. July 2016 · Comments Off on ASK FOR YOUR JOY TO BE RESTORED‏ · Categories: Jesus Christ, Joy, Salvation

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right and steadfast spirit within me… Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit (Psalm 51:10-12 AMP).

Beloved, are you at that place where you watch everybody so full of joy but it feels so different for you. Perhaps, for one reason or the other, it feels like the weight of the whole world is on your shoulder and you just can’t find anything to be joyful about. Well, you don’t have to remain that way. You can do something about it.

I remember watching my daughter once and seeing how she was so full of joy, it made me almost jealous of her because I wasn’t just in the mood that day but I began to ask myself; “what’s happening here?” This is how we should always be. Does it mean she didn’t have anything she was dealing with? I bet the answer was no but she was still joyful. As I watched my daughter so full of joy, our feature text came to mind… Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit…

You have got to get to that point where you tell God something is not right here. I need you to help restore back to me what I’m missing.

The other scripture that also came to mind was… Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation (Isaiah 12:3 NKJV). As I meditated on this text, I began to picture joy as a bucket‎ or jar and without it, you can’t partake of the goodness that comes with our salvation package. The Message translation actually says… Joyfully you’ll pull up buckets of water from the wells of salvation. However, if you don’t have joy, there’s nothing to fetch with

Beloved, one thing I have observed is that the devil just comes and throws all sort of things at us and we tend to think we can’t do anything about it. He says “be sad” and we are like “okay, I am going to be sad. He comes and says “cry” and we are like “okay I’ll cry. How long do you want me to cry for?” but that’s rubbish. You have got to be intentional about taking a hold of all that your salvation has been made available so that the… thief who has come to steal, kill and destroy… (John 10:10) ‎ does not steal it from you.

Beloved… the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17 NKJV). Do you need your joy to be restored? Go get you some Ron Kenoly’s ‘Righteousness, Peace and Joy (in the Holy Ghost)’ old gospel tune and dance to it all week as you ask the Lord to restore your joy.

Beloved… Be full of joy [Rejoice] in the Lord always. I will say again, be full of joy [rejoice] (Philippians 4:4 EXB).
