And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil (Ephesians 4:26 NLT).

Beloved, I remember watching a drama about a so-called Spirit-filled Christian woman who had a major issue with anger. She was a nightmare wife to live with and her husband could not control her. She fought with her neighbours and even took great offence when her pastor preached on anger. She was so mad that she walked out of the church and of course continued the fighting with her poor husband at home. How can pastor be preaching about me and you couldn’t even defend me?

The funny thing is that the pastor didn’t even call her name. He was just letting the congregation know that the next seven days were to be dedicated to prayers because God was going to work in a miraculous way. As a result, he didn’t want people to allow things like anger, quarrelling and the like hinder their blessings. But this woman was offended by it.

Anyway, on the final day of the programme, they all gathered in church and as the pastor was praying, the move of the Holy Spirit was so strong that one lady was so taken away. She mistakenly hit this woman with a temper and trouble started in church. This woman was almost fighting in church. Her embarrassed husband‎ had to intervene. Meanwhile, there happened to be an angel on assignment distributing blessings. He was just placing stickers of blessings on people in the congregation. Everybody got one but this lady who unfortunately had been looking for the fruit of the womb and this is because she was busy fighting everybody. Even her husband got a promotion sticker.

In due season, another lady that was looking for the fruit of the womb‎ got pregnant and this woman was left wondering why she was the only one left out. Then she heard the voice of the Lord rebuking her because of her anger.

The morale of the story is that at times we are the ones that hinder our blessings because of our attitude.

Beloved, the Bible introduces us to Hannah who was a woman that was provoked by her rival, Peninah till the point that she had to desperately cry out to the Lord until her pastor said… GO IN PEACE, and may the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him (1 Samuel 1:17 AMP)

GO IN PEACE… If we take that word literally, it means to be at peace in your mind and also with everybody else including the Peninah’s in your life who would probably try to still make life a living hell for you. Off course, let’s not ignore the fact that you should avoid quarrelling with your spouse whom you need to partner with to make things happen. It is called creating an atmosphere for miracles.

‎Beloved, the Lord is still in the business of blessing people. Don’t hinder yourself. Why not ask the Holy Spirit to reveal and help you deal with anything that may be causing a hindrance to your breakthrough?

…Truth, righteousness, PEACE, faith, and salvation are more than words. LEARN HOW TO APPLY THEM. You’ll need them throughout your life… (Ephesians 6:13-18 MSG).

Beloved, PEACE is an armour of God you can use to fight against the enemy. Your life needs to be governed by PEACE and I always like to use Peter as an example of how to use PEACE as a weapon.

Peter must have learnt from Jesus how to maintain peace in the midst of the storm (Mark 4:38-39)
because locked up in prison… the night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was ASLEEP, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate. Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” AND THE CHAINS FELL OFF HIS WRISTS (ACTS 12:6-7 NLT).

What? About to face death sentence and you are ASLEEP? Yes ASLEEP… AND THE CHAINS FELL OFF HIS WRISTS. This is the power of PEACE that confuses the devil who isn’t really after your house, marriage or child. He is just using it to access your peace of mind but if you can remain calm during the storm he will not know what to do with you.

Towards the end of Jesus’ time on earth, He told His disciples… PEACE I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.] (John 14:27 AMPC)

So, how do you remain calm during a storm? The Bible says… You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are FIXED ON YOU! (Isaiah 26:3 NLT). This means DON’T WORRY about anything; instead, PRAY about everything. Tell God what you need, and THANK HIM for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7 NLT).

Beloved, we are also told that… If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18 NIV). This means do your own part to maintain peace at all times. You can’t control other people but you can control how you respond to them. When you know someone wants to start a fight with you, it takes great strength (not weakness) to walk away. Think before you respond to people. Don’t let the enemy win.

Jesus said… I have told you all this so that you may have PEACE IN ME. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world (John 16:33 NLT).

Beloved, why not learn how to FIX YOUR THOUGHTS on Jesus and those things that would bring PEACE in your life and then watch how your life is transformed.

12. April 2017 · Comments Off on WHY WORRY ABOUT TIME MORE THAN THE OWNER OF TIME? · Categories: Fruit of the Spirit, God's Plan, Hope, Jesus Christ, Relationship, Trusting God

O Lord, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself forever?… REMEMBER HOW SHORT MY LIFE IS… (Psalm 89:46-47 NLT)

Beloved, you’ve just got to laugh when you come across some passages in the Bible. It’s consoling though because it makes one realise that there’s nothing one would ever go through or feel that someone else in the Bible hasn’t passed through or felt before.

REMEMBER HOW SHORT MY LIFE IS… Other translations say…HOW SHORT MY TIME IS…

More like “Lord, in case you haven’t noticed, time is not on my side. I know what You say about patience and all but how long am I to wait? I’m not like You who lives for forever…. For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours (Psalm 90:4 NLT) but for me, the clock is ticking so, what are you waiting for?

Beloved, isn’t this what a lot of us are thinking? One of our biggest problem is that we feel time is against us but we must realise that God is the beginning and the end and we fit somewhere in that timeframe. He included you in there for a specific purpose. So, He must know when your life started and surely He knows when it would end. He knows what He promised has to happen within your timeline. You must also know that God never intends to start anything He isn’t intending to finish. Had He not intended to complete it, He won’t have started it so why are you stressing?

Caleb is a good example. He said to Joshua; “You’ll remember what God said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me… I was FORTY YEARS OLD when Moses…sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land… Now look at me: GOD HAS KEPT ME ALIVE, as He promised. It is now forty-five years since God spoke this word to Moses…AND HERE I AM TODAY, EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS OLD! I’M AS STRONG AS I WAS THE DAY MOSES SENT ME OUT. I’m as strong as ever in battle, whether coming or going. So give me this hill country that God promised me… IF GOD GOES WITH ME, I will drive them out, JUST AS GOD SAID.” (Joshua 14:7-12 MSG)

Beloved, Caleb was totally reliant on the God that made the promise. Whether he was 40 or 85 was irrelevant. It was all about “GOD HAS KEPT ME ALIVE… IF GOD GOES WITH ME… JUST AS GOD SAID…”

Beloved, in Abraham and Sarah’s case… the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD?… (Genesis 18:13-14 NIV)

Please know that God is not on your clock. Rather, you are on His clock. He is the One that has plans for you and so you must know that… He who has begun a good work in you will complete it… (Philippians 1:6)

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, YET I WILL REJOICE IN THE LORD! I WILL BE JOYFUL IN THE GOD OF MY SALVATION! (Habakkuk 3:17-18 NLT)

Beloved, the saying that ‘HAPPINESS IS BASED ON THE THINGS HAPPENING AROUND YOU’ suggests that you can only be happy when conditions are favourable. So one minute you could be happy but the next you could be sad. Joy, on the other hand isn’t based on what’s happening around you. As Christians, this is based on the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

Apostle Paul should serve as an example for us. Physically confined behind the prison walls, he proclaims… REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS. AGAIN I WILL SAY, REJOICE! (Philippians 4:4 NKJV). How free could he have been? If you ask me, I would say freer than most of us on the outside. Here’s a man writing from prison to people not in prison asking them to REJOICE. The New Living Translation says… ALWAYS BE FULL OF JOY IN THE LORD. I SAY IT AGAIN—REJOICE!… The Message Translation says… CELEBRATE GOD ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. I MEAN, REVEL IN HIM!

Apostle Paul did not focus on his past nor present situation. He said… I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead (Philippians 3:13)

He learnt how to be CONTENT AND CONFIDENT IN CHRIST. He said… I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have LEARNED THE SECRET of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength (Philippians 4:12-13 NLT).

Beloved, Apostle Paul advises that you should focus on Christ and not on the struggles you are facing. You are meant to REPLACE WORRYING WITH PRAYER AND THANKSGIVING. He says… Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7 NLT).

He also advises that you should…Fix your thoughts on what is TRUE, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8 NLT) and not on the FACTS of your situation.

Beloved, what are you facing that has sapped the life out of you? Why not locate your joy in the Lord? Focus on Jesus and He will anoint you by pouring out the oil of joy until it overflows.

In the days when the judges ruled in Israel, a severe famine came upon the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah left his home and went to live in the country of Moab, taking his wife and two sons with him (Ruth 1:1 NLT).

Beloved, there’s the saying that ‘all that glitters is not gold’ or that ‘the grass is not always greener on the other side’ and I bet Naomi wished someone had sat them down and really explained this to them before they left their home. They move to Moab in search of greener pastures but see what happened… Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons (Ruth 1:3 NLT). And then… both Mahlon and Kilion died. This left Naomi alone, without her two sons or her husband (Ruth 1:5 NLT).

If only they had been patient to see what God was going to do because the situation at home did not last forever… Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of His people by providing food for them… (Ruth 1:6 NLT)

Bethlehem means ‘house of bread’ meaning they were in the city of bread but because they didn’t see the bread they left. It reminds me of Abraham. Soon after he set out on his journey, he arrived in Canaan, the promised land but… there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe (Genesis 12:10 NIV). Abraham had to go back and forth for a while but I like that when it came to his son, Isaac, the Lord immediately intervened and said… DO NOT GO DOWN TO EGYPT… Dwell temporarily in this land, and I will be with you and will favor you with blessings… (GENESIS 26:3 AMPC).

Beloved, are you thinking of escaping to Moab? Moab is from Lot’s descendants and we know the choice Lot made that landed him in Sodom and Gomorrah. Because of impatience and wanting to take the easy way out, Naomi faced deadly consequences. We tend not to like anything that causes us any kind of pain or discomfort but longsuffering is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and …after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you (Peter 5:10 ESV).

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him (John 4:20-23 NKJV).

Beloved, a few weeks ago, I went on a retreat with a few ladies and one of the sessions on our programme was ‘Worship in Spirit and in Truth’. Well, we all had our notes to teach on the topic but because ‘meeting by the well’ is very much a practical ministry, the Lord sure had something else in mind and by the time we were done, I had practical notes to go with my theory.

So, let the worship session begin…

Beloved, we ended up having a major argument which went along the lines of… ‘the way you Africans sing your songs versus the way we Jamaicans sing our songs’. The interesting thing is that it was the same worship song but sung in a slightly different way and one admitted that she struggled with the way you Africans sing your version and at some point, was contemplating just looking for a Jamaican ministry to join. The funny thing is that ‎she found it strange when ‘we Africans’ said we also struggled with your version (LOL). Why would you find it strange? What gives your version authority over mine? It was an interesting conversation which just shed some light on the conflict that the Samaritan woman found herself in.

Which one is it? “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Beloved, in the end, we all admitted we couldn’t feel the presence of God but once we were able to push past that, we were fine. ‎So, is culture a barrier to worshipping in spirit and in truth or were we just in the flesh?

When I did my Masters in Applied Theology, we did a study on Christ and culture: Five views by H. Richard Niebuhr.

1. Christ against culture
2. Christ of culture
3. Christ above culture
4. Christ and culture in paradox
5. Christ the transformer of culture

Beloved, which one do you think it is? Today being Sunday, as you worship the Lord, why not ask yourself this question; am I a true worshipper? Because the Lord is seeking such

A man’s pride and sense of self-importance will bring him down, but he who has a humble spirit will obtain honor (Proverbs 29:23 AMP).

Beloved, I’ve been reading about Joseph who was popularly known as daddy’s favourite. He got a special coat for it. That’s enough to get you into a lot of trouble with your siblings but then you have the nerves to tell daddy the wrong things we are doing (Genesis 37:2).

We are told that… His brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him (Genesis 37: 4 NLT). This tells me that there must have been constant quarrelling and fighting amongst them; “Get out of here you this daddy’s boy. Let’s make sure nobody talks or plays with Joseph today” and Joseph would say “Daddy, do you know what Reuben and Judah did today?”

So, can you imagine how Joseph must have felt when he dreamt. He probably couldn’t wait to wake up from his sleep. Can you imagine how he must have expressed the dream? …“Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.” And his brothers said to him, “SHALL YOU INDEED REIGN OVER US? Or SHALL YOU INDEED HAVE DOMINION OVER US?” SO THEY HATED HIM EVEN MORE FOR HIS DREAMS AND FOR HIS WORDS (Genesis 37:6-8 NKJV).

You know Joseph could also interpret so he must have interpreted the dream and who knows how he did it because the message translation says – they hated him more than ever because of his dreams and THE WAY HE TALKED.

But it didn’t stop there. Let me rub it in some more… Then HE DREAMED STILL ANOTHER DREAM AND TOLD IT TO HIS BROTHERS, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” So he told it to his father and his brothers; AND HIS FATHER REBUKED HIM and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? SHALL YOUR MOTHER AND I AND YOUR BROTHERS INDEED COME TO BOW DOWN TO THE EARTH BEFORE YOU?” (Genesis 37:9-10 NKJV)

Beloved, this time his father rebuked him. But why? Could it be how he said it?

What am I trying to say here? God gives gifts to accomplish His purpose but we sometimes make it about ourselves. Perhaps, Joseph had a boastful attitude that fuelled his brother’s jealousy. However, he soon learnt the hard way. They sold him into slavery and after several years of severe hardship, he was humbled. He learnt an important lesson; our gifts and talents come from God and it’s for His purpose and not for us to gain grounds or settle scores with people. He later gave God the credit when he was brought before Pharaoh… “It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.” (Genesis 41:16 NLT)

Beloved, IS IT ALL ABOUT YOU or do you acknowledge that it’s beyond your power?

[The Man] asked him, What is your name? And [in shock of realization, whispering] he said, Jacob [supplanter, schemer, trickster, swindler]! And He said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob [supplanter], but Israel [contender with God]; for you have contended and have power with God and with men and have prevailed (Genesis 32:27-28 AMPC).

Beloved, we know the story of Jacob who spent a considerate amount of years running away from his brother because he stole his birth right and blessings. However, after having a taste of his own medicine from Laban… Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your father and grandfather and to your relatives there, and I will be with you.” (Genesis 31:3 NLT)

Beloved, the Lord’s instruction meant that Jacob had to go back and face his brother but not without wrestling it out with God first; a battle that resulted in a change of name and character. He was no longer Jacob, the supplanter, schemer, trickster, swindler. He was now Israel.

So, what happened next? We are told that Jacob went ahead to face his brother and… he bowed to the ground seven times as he approached his brother. But Esau ran to meet him. He embraced Jacob, kissed his neck, and they both cried (Genesis 33:3-4 Voice). So, why was it easy for Esau to receive his brother after everything that took place between them?

I remember someone saying it’s because Esau met with Israel and not Jacob. It was Jacob he had an issue with but Jacob was no more. He was dead.

Beloved, what am I trying to say? The word of God says… When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him (Proverbs 16:7 AMP). The Voice translation says… When people make good choices, He is pleased; He even causes their enemies to live peacefully near them. The Message translation says… When God approves of your life, even your enemies will end up shaking your hand.

One thing I always tell the people I mentor or anyone I’m giving counsel to is that they shouldn’t focus on the people that have issues with them. Rather, your focus should be on working on improving yourself and pleasing the Lord. Yes, people may have a valid reason for pointing the finger at you or they may not, however, there’s nothing like ceasing every opportunity to grow. That’s what the Christian journey is about… And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18 AMP).

Like the Apostle of my church would say #pre-me-glow… Same thing as saying “watch me glow or transform before your very eyes”

Beloved, today is the last day in November and we are about to enter December, the last month of 2016 and it’s another opportunity to reflect and examine your ways. In what areas has the Holy Spirit been dealing with you?

25. September 2016 · Comments Off on ALLOW THE LORD TO DO THE WORK IN YOU · Categories: Fruit of the Spirit, God's Plan, Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, Prayer

[Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight (Philippians 2:13 AMP).

Beloved, I have come to realise that there are some prayers you shouldn’t make if you are not really ready for it because God really does answer prayers and there are some prayers that He answers quicker than others. One of such prayers is when you pray something along the lines of… Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Psalm139:23-24 NIV).

This is one of my favourite verses that I pray with but I tell you today that there is really no point in saying this prayer if you really don’t mean it because when you make such prayers, all of a sudden, bright lights starts to flash on you and you start to see hidden spots and wrinkles. The Lord actually starts to show you all the stuff you never even imagined still existed inside of you… the murmuring and complaining, the doubting, the stubbornness and the hardening of your heart, the pride, resentment… you name it. You are then left thinking oh my God; what’s all this? You then start to feel unworthy and become like Simon Peter who… fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord (Luke 5:8).

Beloved, last weekend, the Lord shown me in a big way how I still placed a lot of focus on myself and I’m telling you, it was ugly… big time ugly. I couldn’t even worship properly. I found out big time that I had not totally died to self.

Hmmm… So where do I even start from? I didn’t even bother attempting to focus on my own strength because I knew it would fail me. I just decided that just like our feature text says, it is only God that can bring about the desired change. The New Living Translation of our feature text says… For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.

Beloved, has the Lord been showing you things about yourself that still needs to die? Well, it isn’t time to say “woe is me!” Rather, it’s time to allow the Holy Spirit that lives inside of you to go to work so why not join me to make this humble prayer;

Lord… Since you are the One who works in me to will and to act in order to fulfill Your good purpose… please WORK IN ME… Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; let Your good Spirit lead me into a level country and into the land of uprightness (Psalm 143:10 AMPC).

And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” If you ENDURE CHASTENING, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons (Hebrews 12:5-8 NKJV).

Beloved, if you are like me, then chastisement isn’t a word you like hearing but that’s because many of us have memories that could be classified as abusive. I remember having a primary school teacher who would flog you depending on your test scores. So, for example, if you scored 6 out of 10 then he gave you 4 strokes of his cane. If you scored 7 out of 10, he gave you 3 strokes. The only way you escaped his chastisement was if you had a perfect score of 10 out of 10. Now, he was both my class teacher and after school (lesson) teacher so you can imagine the amount of flogging I received. However, that doesn’t mean I was dumb though (LOL).

Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is that we usually think God’s chastening is the kind of abusive chastening that many of us grew up with. However, when we look at the Greek word ‘paideia’, it means instruction that trains someone to reach full development (maturity). It involves the whole training and education of children which relates to the cultivation of mind, morals and virtues and is a means that God uses to move us from babes to mature sons.

Beloved, the Lord’s chastening isn’t punishment. Rather, it’s about educating, training, nurturing, correcting etc. and a sure sign that the He’s working in your life. Our feature text talks about enduring chastening. This isn’t a bad thing. What we need is to correct our perception. We are told that if we endure correction, God treats us as sons but not just sons, mature sons (Huios) that the world is earnestly waiting for to manifest (Romans 8:19) and not just babes or teenagers so we shouldn’t despise it or be discouraged by it.

A few days ago, I was telling a young lady about this maturity level of sonship that God wants to get us to and so if He’s taking us through a process where He’s teaching us to love or be humble like Christ, then we ought to embrace it.

I was listening to someone say God’s chastening brings about new revelation in our lives and our attitude should be ‘thank You Lord, my eyes are now open and I can see what you are doing in my life. I accept and embrace it and as you do so, you quickly move on to a higher level; a better place than you’ve ever been. They went on to say despising God’s chastening is a soul reaction while endurance is a work of the spirit.

Hmmm… Beloved, are you allowing the Lord treat you as an illegitimate son?
