After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising Him for His holy splendor. This is what they sang: “Give thanks to the Lord; His faithful love endures forever!” At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves. The armies of Moab and Ammon turned against their allies from Mount Seir and killed every one of them. After they had destroyed the army of Seir, they began attacking each other. So when the army of Judah arrived at the lookout point in the wilderness, all they saw were dead bodies lying on the ground as far as they could see. Not a single one of the enemy had escaped (2 chronicles 20:21-24 NLT)

Beloved, I remember a few years ago when I was a real cry baby, a prophet walked up to me and said; “Do you know what the Lord has equipped you with?” He went on to say that “the Lord has equipped you so that your greatest tool against the enemy is your praise and as you keep praising God, you would see Him fighting your enemies for you”.

Wow, no wonder the enemy would try to do everything to silence your praise but we ought to let Him know He won’t succeed.

Yesterday morning, as I was reading our feature text, I felt the Holy Spirit impress in me the need to spend the next few days just praising the Lord and as I was praying with my prayer partner later on, I told her to open her Bible to 2 chronicles 20. However, before I could say another word, she shouted and said she was reading that same chapter yesterday morning and she also felt the Holy Spirit saying the same thing to her.

Beloved, the Bible says… “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” (2 Corinthians 13:1 NKJV). This is the season to praise hard because you are embarking on serious warfare. It doesn’t matter what situation you find yourself, you must activate your praise. Off course, there are times when the devil would try fighting you so you can’t even open your mouth but the prophet went on to say that “even in the middle of the night, when you find yourself crying and can’t find the words to pray, just worship God as you cry‎ and watch what He does”.

What was the result of the people’s praise? Not a single one of their enemy escaped and then… King Jehoshaphat and his men went out to gather the plunder. They found vast amounts of equipment, clothing, and other valuables—more than they could carry. There was so much plunder that it took them three days just to collect it all! ON THE FOURTH DAY they gathered in the Valley of Blessing, which got its name that day because the people praised and thanked the Lord there. It is still called the Valley of Blessing today (2 Chronicles 20:25-26 NLT).

Beloved, when praises go up, blessings come down. It’s time to Praise your way through the remaining days of July.

For God shows no partiality [undue favor or unfairness; with Him one man is not different from another] (Romans 2:11 AMPC).

Beloved, I like that the Lord is no respecter of persons. Everyone, regardless of your background, education, race, past, whatever can approach Him. Our feature text says He doesn’t discriminate. He sees everything that goes on in the earth. He sees everyone and knows us personally by name.

I’m thinking of a man called Zacchaeus, a very rich tax collector, but there comes a time when everything you’ve got no longer has the ability to satisfy you; a typical case of been there… done it… but I’m now at the point where I believe there’s more to life.

I also like that the Lord somehow makes it impossible for us to reach perfection without him so I believe your shortcomings are there for a purpose. No matter how much money Zacchaeus had, it could not buy him height. The Bible says he was a short man and maybe he had been searching for things to fill that gap. I’m sure people made fun of him and he may have thought perhaps if he had all the money, he would fit in but it didn’t work. He was still short so at some point he decided that the height he couldn’t achieve physically, he had to achieve spiritually. He decided to seek God and we know that God… IS A REWARDER OF THOSE WHO DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM (Hebrews 11:6 NLT).

The Message translation says… He cares enough to respond to those who seek Him. Zacchaeus was desperate; he didn’t care what others thought. He sought after Jesus. He made up his mind that Jesus was not going to pass by without noticing him… So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, HE LOOKED UP AT ZACCHAEUS AND CALLED HIM BY NAME. “Zacchaeus!” He said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” (Luke 19:4-5 NLT)

Beloved, Jesus always knows where to look. He can always tell from amongst the crowd that one person that is sincerely looking for Him and I like that He would stop everything else to attend to you. He was passing by but He decided to drop by in Zacchaeus house. Why? Only because Zacchaeus decided to climb higher.

You may think you have shortcomings but regardless of what they are, Jesus can fill the gap and as far as you decide that enough is enough; I want to let go of everything that I’ve been using to disguise my shortcomings and just seek after Him… I want to position myself where He can find me… He would reward your sincere effort. Be encouraged to go higher in your walk with the Lord regardless of how low you think you are right now.

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise early, To retire late, To eat the bread of anxious labors—For He gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep (Psalm 127:1-2 AMP).

Beloved, there are times when we have a very busy schedule that it can become overwhelming.
and we think the only way out is just to plough our way through – we think we must just keep going till things get done but this becomes at the expense of our precious sleep and our relationships including our relationship with the Lord.

This isn’t intentional. Many of us have the mind to try and make the Lord our top priority, spending ample time with Him; waiting on Him for His wisdom for direction and also resting in Him but we still find that we struggle but a while ago, I remember listening to Israel Houghton, the famous gospel artist, preach about the priority Jesus takes in our lives based on his famous song; ‘Jesus at the centre’. He said the problem with making Jesus our number one priority is that whether we like to admit it or not, thing pop up and regardless of how hard we try, we sometimes find that He drops down to number two and even further down our priority list as we get even busier.

To resolve this problem, instead of having a top priority list where Jesus is number one, he drew a circle and said we should place Jesus at the centre of it all. That way he never drops from number one position but is a part of everything we do. He demonstrated this using a wonderful illustration and I’m not sure whether I’ve explained it as well as he did but instead of having your top ten priorities listed one below the other, picture them spread around the edge of a circle and Jesus is at the centre of that circle. That way He becomes even a part of your eating and sleeping.

Also, my Study Bible notes say that “God is not against human effort but working to the exclusion of rest or to the neglect of family may be a cover up for an inability to trust God to provide for our needs. We all need adequate rest and times of spiritual refreshment. On the other hard this is not an excuse to be lazy. Be careful to maintain a balance: Work while trusting God, and also rest while trusting Him”.

Beloved, our feature text says the Lord… gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep. The message translation says… it’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know He enjoys giving rest to those He loves?

When you make the Lord your centre priority, you can go to rest knowing that He is working on your behalf and when you wake up, you find that you are refreshed and that He has put things in place which then requires less of your human effort.

Shalom!

But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand and steadied the Ark of God. Then the Lord’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him dead because of this… (2 Samuel 6:6‭-‬7 NLT)

Beloved, our feature text is one of those texts that could be quite disturbing. Why would God kill Uzzah who was just trying to help out? However, I want to draw our attention to what happens at the threshing floor.

Wikipedia describes this as a place where the chaff-removal process takes place during harvest time; a place where the grain is removed from the chaff. Threshing (thrashing) was originally to tramp or stamp heavily with feet… and was later applied to the act of separating out grain by the feet of people or oxen. It also involves ‘winnowing’ which involves throwing the mixture of chaff and grain into the air so that the wind blows away the lighter chaff, while the heavier grains fall back down for recovery.

Looking up the meaning of winnowing, another definition came up which breaks it down in a way that applies to us. It’s to “remove (people or things) from a group until only the best ones are left”.

It’s a place of separation intended to shift away those that are not meant to go with you to the next level and that’s what happened to King David as he took on the position of leading Israel but we are told that… David became angry and grieved and offended because of the Lord’s outburst against Uzzah… (2 Samuel 6:8 AMP)

David was angry and in his own eyes, he thought he had every reason to be. After all, my heart was in the right place. I was only trying to do something good. I’ve brought these people together and all I was trying to do is bring back the glory but he didn’t know that the Lord had to get rid of anyone that would stand in the way of His glory and that’s why we never to lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Interestingly, Uzzah means strength or to be strong. He tried to help out in his own strength. In his own ability, intellect – how he thought it should be done rather than how the Lord said it should be done. Unfortunately, such people would forever bring strife as it’s more about them and what they can do.

Beloved, I believe this is a threshing season and while it’s not funny because it would feel like everything is just thrown up in the air but it’s what’s required for the much-needed separation to take place… so that only unshakable things will remain (Hebrews 12:27 NLT).

So,… friends, when life gets really difficult, don’t jump to the conclusion that God isn’t on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, WITH GLORY JUST AROUND THE CORNER. (I Peter 4:12‭-‬13 MSG)

Glory is around the corner… Halleluiah!

04. July 2017 · Comments Off on COULD IT BE TIME TO CUT IT DOWN? · Categories: Action, Change, Choices, Decision making

Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed. Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’ “The gardener answered, ‘Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer. If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.’” (Luke 13:6-9 NLT)

Beloved, this is a familiar that we use when we want to ask the Lord for more time so we can see whether we can be productive if we put in more effort but during my retreat in Spain, the owner of the retreat centre said something to me that stopped me in my tracks. She said; “you are trying too hard to fix things”. I tell you that word cut through me like a knife, I didn’t know how to respond.

Referring to our feature text, immediately, I remembered what someone said recently about asking for more time; “some of you know that this is what you told the Lord last year”. Lord, if you just give me one more year, I would do everything within my power to fix this relationship or situation that I’m in but you know deep down that it’s time to cut that thing down because it’s costing you too much? How long would you keep requesting for more time to fix that dead situation? How much more of your attention are you going to give it?

I found it interesting that the parable ends without telling us how the owner of the garden responded to the gardener but it reminds me of Abraham and Lot. God never said a word to Abraham but after seeing how toxic and unproductive their relationship was becoming, it was Abraham who had to summon the courage to say this is not working.

We are told that… finally Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not allow this conflict to come between us… The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate….” (Genesis 13:8-9 NLT) and it was only… after Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west. I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession (Genesis 13:14-15 NLT).

Beloved, only last week, I wrote about laying aside every weight so we can run with patience the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1). Are there things in your life weighing you down? Could it be time to cut it down? Are some of the things in your life just taking up space?

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1 KJV).

Beloved, yesterday, I wrote about laying aside that besetting sin that so easily beset us but our feature text doesn’t just talk about the sin which so easily beset us, it also advises us to lay aside every weight that slows us down from running the race set before us and this is one that affects a lot of us.

I like that the text says, ‘every weight’. The Amplified Bible Translation says… stripping off every unnecessary weight… The Message translation says… No extra spiritual fat… and I would like for you to think about all the junk that you consume that causes you to put on extra pounds and then try and relate that to your spiritual life.

Beloved, this is a call for us to get rid of those things in our lives that do not contribute to our purpose here on earth. This is a call for us to do a simple evaluation of everything we are involved with by asking ourselves this honest question; what contribution is this thing making to my life? ‘This thing’ includes your relationships, your conversations, your daily activities… everything…

I did this evaluation a while ago and I tell you… my TV went off, my contact list reduced to less than half, I reduced the number of places I went to and you would be surprised how much free time you have to do the things that are really important and are in line with the race that you are running.

Beloved, King David said… Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; Nor do I involve myself in great matters, Or in things too difficult for me (Psalm 131:1 AMP). The Message translation says… I haven’t meddled where I have no business…

The Apostle Paul also said… No soldier in active service gets entangled in the [ordinary business] affairs of civilian life; [he avoids them] so that he may please the one who enlisted him to serve (2 Timothy 2:4 AMP). In order words, stay out of people’s business and focus on what you’ve been called to do.

Like I said, I dropped a number of things and have been amazed at the number of important things I could do but even now, as I’m writing this, I’m away at a retreat somewhere in a little Spanish village because the Lord wanted me to spend some alone time assessing and re-evaluating where I am now; to drop every weight so I can hear His still small voice giving direction for what is set before me.

So, beloved, the question for you is, “do you need to get rid of any weight?”

10. June 2017 · Comments Off on WHOSE REPORT WILL YOU BELIEVE? · Categories: Action, Choices, God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Obedience, Trusting God

In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I HAVE HEARD MANY REPORTS about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem (Acts 9:10-13 NIV).

I HAVE HEARD MANY REPORTS…

Beloved, do you know the problem with many of us is that we hear too many reports? This person said this… that person said that… As a result, we end up not doing what the Lord has asked us to do and we miss out on the outcome. However, one of the things I have come to understand is that everybody has a unique walk with the Lord and the grace and favour He might give to one person may be different to what He gives to another. There are also other factors to consider why people’s outcomes are different such as perfect obedience, perfect timing, one’s trust and total reliance on the Lord etc. So, if you are listening to that person’s report, you may just be doing yourself a lot of disservice.

Beloved, when the Lord gives you an assignment, be rest assured that He means it when He says… I will go before you and level the mountains [to make the crooked places straight]; I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut asunder the bars of iron (Isaiah 45:2 AMPC).

In the case of Ananias in our feature text, even before God sent Ananias on this special assignment, He had already put everything in place. All Ananias had to do was show up… The Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel (Acts 9:15 NIV).

Beloved, when the Lord says go, He expects you to go. Those MANY REPORTS that you have heard are meant to discourage you from moving ahead but the simple question you have got to ask yourself today is… WHOSE REPORT WILL YOU BELIEVE?… To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? (Isaiah 53:1 NKJV)

Ananias based his fear on an OUTDATED report. Could this be your case? We are asked to fix… our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:2 NIV). He is the One that has the most UP-TO-DATE report.

And remember… God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead… (Philippians 3:10 NLT)

Beloved, there’s this gospel song by the Nigerian Gospel artist Sinach titled “More of You” with wonderful lyrics that says.. ‘I want more of You Jesus… the more I know You… The more I want to know you… Jesus… More of You…’

It’s a very beautiful and simple song however, I’ve had to stop and ask myself… what does this actually mean? What do I mean when I say… The more I know You… The more I want to know you… Jesus…? What steps do I actually take to want to know Jesus more?

The story of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch comes to mind. The Bible says… Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road… that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch… This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, AND ON HIS WAY HOME WAS SITTING IN HIS CHARIOT READING THE BOOK OF ISAIAH THE PROPHET. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him (Acts 8:26-31 NIV).

Beloved, how many times have you left a Christian gathering with that kind of hunger for more of God’s word? I remember listening to someone say they laugh at how many Bibles people leave behind after service and don’t come back for it. If it were their wallets, surely they would come back for it… but not their Bibles. That can wait till next Sunday. But this Ethiopian eunuch was returning from a worship service and because of his hunger for more, was found reading his Bible. As a result, Jesus chose to reveal Himself to Him…

This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter… In His humiliation He was deprived of justice… His life was taken from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus (Acts 8:32-35 NIV).

Isn’t it amazing how Jesus would reveal Himself at your level? This man’s eagerness didn’t stop there… As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him (Acts 8:36-38 NIV).

Beloved, this is a simple example of someone asking for more? I want more of You Jesus… How hungry are you? What steps are you taking to want to know Jesus more? How much time do you spend with Him in prayer and in His word?

04. June 2017 · Comments Off on YOU HAVE BEEN FILLED TO FUNCTION · Categories: Action, God's Plan, Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, Pentacost

AND when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind… And they were all FILLED with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:1-4 KJV).

Beloved, ‘AND’ is a part of a speech that connects two words or phrases together suggesting here that something happened before that connects to the above text. So, what happened before?

Well, just before Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised that the apostles will receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them to enable them witnesses to the end of the world and then He was taken up into a cloud (Acts 1:8-9).

Wow! That must have been a sight. This was someone that used to eat and talk with them. They stood there staring until two white-robed men had to interrupt… “why do you stand gazing into heaven? This same Jesus, Who was caught away and lifted up from among you into heaven, will return in [just] the same way in which you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11 AMPC).

This was almost like saying; common guys, stop wasting time staring into space. He’ll be back but right now, there’s loads of work to be done. So, they started preparing – praying together, getting their team back in order and bonding and … AND when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place… and after they were filled with the Holy Spirit, work began. Peter began to preach and 3,000 people got saved in one day (Acts 2:14-41).

Following that, he and John healed the crippled beggar (Acts 3:1-11) and many more great works followed. Why? Because Jesus made it clear that they were to be FILLED TO FUNCTION and not gaze into space.

Beloved, unfortunately many Christians are still gazing… either at the cross or into space; that is looking at where Jesus was when He’s moved on and now lives inside us? We’ve been filled with the Holy Spirit. The same Jesus that walked the earth now lives inside of us… and as He is, so are we in this world (1 John 4:17) and there’s work to be done; greater works than He did because there are now many of Him working around.

The apostles began to speak as the Spirit gave them utterance. Utterance is the release of the word. However, many are mute. If it’s the same Spirit that spoke in Genesis 1; and spoke in Jesus (and the Word became flesh); why isn’t He speaking through us?

Beloved, the apostles functioned as a result of the filling of the Holy Spirit and if there’s no difference in your filling, then there should be no difference in your ability to function. Like someone once said; no one puts petrol in a packed car. Are you packed? Or are you more interested in owning 10 packed cars? Is this the time to be gazing at what the world is gazing at?

On this Pentecost Sunday, let our prayer be simply; Father please show me how to use my filling to function.

Then he said, “Take the arrows”; so he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground”; so he struck three times, and stopped. And the man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it! But now you will strike Syria only three times.” (II Kings 13:18‭-‬19 NKJV)

Beloved, I am currently reading a book by Apostle John Eckhardt on Fasting for Breakthrough and Deliverance where he refers to our feature text. He says “Elisha told Joash that he must strike against Syria over and over again until they had been destroyed. Then Elisha told him to take a bow and arrows and strike it on the ground. He didn’t tell him how many times. Joash hit it on the ground three times and stopped. The prophet was very angry because it meant Joash would only defeat the Syrians three times. Three times was not enough to destroy the Syrians as Elisha had prophesied. Perhaps Elisha could have told him how many times to strike the arrows on the ground. But sometimes what is in a person comes out in their actions. Joash didn’t have enough hatred and anger for the enemy to strike the ground beyond the third time-or until the arrow broke!”

Beloved, this left me thinking? How much do you hate the devil? How much do you want to see yourself delivered in whatever area?

I started thinking of the time Jesus’ disciples could not cast out a demon from a little boy and Jesus had to come to their rescue. Later… His disciples asked Him privately, why could not we drive it out? And He replied to them, THIS KIND cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting (Mark 9:28-29 AMPC).

So, if Jesus says…. this kind can only go away through prayer and fasting, do you love your food more than you love your freedom?

Apostle John Eckhardt went on to say “when you are dealing with the enemy, you need to give him more than just a courtesy tap. You need to really want to win. You have to hate what you are fighting so much that you beat it until the arrows break. You must hate lust, poverty, fear, rejection, or whatever it is until you smash it. It’s not just one, two, three, and then look at the prophet and ask, “Did I do good?” Strike it until it is destroyed”.

Hmmm… it’s not just fasting till 12 noon and then say, “did I do good?” It’s not just praying for 30 minutes to one hour and then say, “did I do good?” No, you are to keep praying and fasting or doing whatever it takes until something happens.

Beloved, how desperate are you? How much do you hate that situation you are in? Have you got that much holy anger in you that you want to keep striking until that situation is completely destroyed?

SELAH!
