Then the angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a cloud]; for that reason the holy (pure, sinless) Child shall be called the Son of God. And listen, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. For with God nothing [is or ever] shall be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD.” And the angel left her (Luke 1:35-38 AMP).

Beloved, when it comes to God, there are some things that would never make sense to the human mind and that’s why the Christian faith is based on believing God. When the angel of God visited Mary, the mother of Jesus and told her that as a virgin she would become pregnant, can you imagine what would have happened if she had allowed herself to really try and reason it out?

If only this is our unshakable response to many of the things God tells us, we would see great things happen. However, most times, we tend to believe for a second or so until satan comes like a thief and snatches the word from us through doubt and reasoning.

The great thing about this text is that God did not just leave Mary with His word, He also left her with somebody else’s testimony. The Message translation says… The angel answered “… did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months pregnant! … Everyone thought she couldn’t have a baby because she had passed child bearing age but it’s not about what you or anyone thinks. It’s about what God has done, what He can and says He would do. And I believe the Lord was also saying… Yes, I did that but don’t even limit Me to that because I am able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you ask or think.

Beloved, what has the Lord told you that you’re still struggling with understanding how it would happen? Well don’t lose another night’s sleep. Rather, until it happens, let this be your watchword… MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD

Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do SUPERABUNDANTLY more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20 AMP)… MAY IT BE DONE TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD

A man’s pride and sense of self-importance will bring him down, but he who has a humble spirit will obtain honor (Proverbs 29:23 AMP).

Beloved, I’ve been reading about Joseph who was popularly known as daddy’s favourite. He got a special coat for it. That’s enough to get you into a lot of trouble with your siblings but then you have the nerves to tell daddy the wrong things we are doing (Genesis 37:2).

We are told that… His brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him (Genesis 37: 4 NLT). This tells me that there must have been constant quarrelling and fighting amongst them; “Get out of here you this daddy’s boy. Let’s make sure nobody talks or plays with Joseph today” and Joseph would say “Daddy, do you know what Reuben and Judah did today?”

So, can you imagine how Joseph must have felt when he dreamt. He probably couldn’t wait to wake up from his sleep. Can you imagine how he must have expressed the dream? …“Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.” And his brothers said to him, “SHALL YOU INDEED REIGN OVER US? Or SHALL YOU INDEED HAVE DOMINION OVER US?” SO THEY HATED HIM EVEN MORE FOR HIS DREAMS AND FOR HIS WORDS (Genesis 37:6-8 NKJV).

You know Joseph could also interpret so he must have interpreted the dream and who knows how he did it because the message translation says – they hated him more than ever because of his dreams and THE WAY HE TALKED.

But it didn’t stop there. Let me rub it in some more… Then HE DREAMED STILL ANOTHER DREAM AND TOLD IT TO HIS BROTHERS, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” So he told it to his father and his brothers; AND HIS FATHER REBUKED HIM and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? SHALL YOUR MOTHER AND I AND YOUR BROTHERS INDEED COME TO BOW DOWN TO THE EARTH BEFORE YOU?” (Genesis 37:9-10 NKJV)

Beloved, this time his father rebuked him. But why? Could it be how he said it?

What am I trying to say here? God gives gifts to accomplish His purpose but we sometimes make it about ourselves. Perhaps, Joseph had a boastful attitude that fuelled his brother’s jealousy. However, he soon learnt the hard way. They sold him into slavery and after several years of severe hardship, he was humbled. He learnt an important lesson; our gifts and talents come from God and it’s for His purpose and not for us to gain grounds or settle scores with people. He later gave God the credit when he was brought before Pharaoh… “It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.” (Genesis 41:16 NLT)

Beloved, IS IT ALL ABOUT YOU or do you acknowledge that it’s beyond your power?

“This is what the Lord says: Because you have obeyed Me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by My own name that I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed Me.” (Genesis 22:16-18 NLT)

Beloved, has the enemy been lying to you? Many have obeyed the Lord and the devil may want you to believe that your sacrifice was for nothing but the Lord wants you to know that because you obeyed… I will certainly bless you… all because you have obeyed Me…

We see in our feature text that because of Abraham’s obedience, the Lord moved from just making him a promise to sealing it with His name. He told Abraham… I swear by My own name that I will certainly bless you…

Later, we are told that… Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in His own name, saying: “I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.” Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised. Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound Himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be PERFECTLY SURE THAT HE WOULD NEVER CHANGE HIS MIND. So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie… (Hebrews 6:13-18 NLT)

Beloved, God has given both His promise and His oath so you can be PERFECTLY SURE THAT HE WOULD NEVER CHANGE HIS MIND. Don’t allow the enemy bombard your minds with thoughts like “you have missed your season” or that he has succeeded in stealing your harvest. Well, that’s a lie from the pit of hell. Remember… those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest (Psalm 126:5-6 NLT). That’s the word of the Lord.

Beloved, one last thing, the Lord told Abraham… because you have obeyed me… and the title of this message is… ‘because you obeyed’… so I can’t end this writeup without asking whether you obeyed.

During our prayer meeting on Monday, we were led to pray for the grace to be totally obedient to the Lord because He was showing us that He was waiting… to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled (2 Corinthians 10:6 NKJV). Abraham could have allowed his reasoning get in the way of his obedience so you may need to cast all… arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV)

SELAH! Pause and calmly think of that…

“Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!” “NO, MY LORD!” SHE CRIED. “O MAN OF GOD, DON’T DECEIVE ME AND GET MY HOPES UP LIKE THAT.” But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said (2 Kings 4:16-17 NLT)

Beloved, if you’ve never been in a situation where you’ve waited and waited on God and nothing happened, then you won’t understand where this lady is coming from but I’m sure the rest of us totally understand.

I remember when my brother once told me a story of a grown man who waited for a very long time for a bus out in the cold London winter weather and when the bus eventually came, this man got on it and started to sob. Why are you crying sir? “I waited and waited and waited for the bus to come but it didn’t come”, he said. But aren’t you on the bus now? LOL. Beloved, why was this grown man crying? I believe it’s because there’s something about hoping and waiting for long periods of time that just doesn’t sit well with us. We can’t handle the pain of waiting.

In our feature text, we are told of this wealthy Shunammite woman. In a specific aspect of her life, she had concluded that all hope was lost. But what might have shattered her HOPE?

The bus just wasn’t coming. Over and over again, she had repeatedly failed in the area of child bearing. Each time the pregnancy test results came back with a negative, a little bit of her hope was chipped away until there was nothing left. The Bible says… Hope deferred makes the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12 NLT). Again, if you haven’t experienced long delays, you won’t understand. For this woman, it reached a point that instead of morning sickness, she experienced a sickness in the heart as her hope was deferred time after time. So, she decided this is just too painful. I just can’t take it anymore. I’ve got to stop this. She gave up because it was way easier to carry on without this expectation than to remain vulnerable and left heartbroken each time. Also, with her husband being old, their natural conditions were no longer favourable. So naturally speaking, hoping was just a waste of time.

She must have said what’s the point but then she looked to other things to fill the void (2 Kings 4:13). “At least, I’m comfortable in other aspects of life. I’m wealthy and influential. Maybe God doesn’t want me to have a child and that’s why He has blessed me in the other areas”. That’s always our way of anesthetizing the pain. She took her hope of ever having a child, locked it up in a box and threw it into the sea, never to be retrieved and now addresses the man of God as a liar. No! The devil is the liar because sure enough, the woman soon had a son.

Beloved, the bus finally came. Dare to hope again?

Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, BUT HE LAUGHED TO HIMSELF IN DISBELIEF. “How could I become a father at the age of 100?” he thought. “And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?” So Abraham said to God, “MAY ISHMAEL LIVE UNDER YOUR SPECIAL BLESSING!” (Genesis 17:17-18 NLT)

Beloved, it’s always reassuring to read about great men of God whom at some point in their walk with God shared some of our struggles. It’s also reassuring to know that God is willing to work with us till we get to the point where He wants us to be. Would it surprise you that Abraham, the father of all who believe (Romans 4:16) once doubted if God’s promise was ever going to happen?

After waiting for years, God appeared to him when he was now 99 years (Gen 17:1) to reassure him of his promise but probably sick of waiting, Abraham said… MAY ISHMAEL LIVE UNDER YOUR SPECIAL BLESSING…

How did he get to this point? Well, right from the first time Abraham was mentioned in the Bible, his problem was highlighted (Genesis 11:29-30). The Lord then tells him to leave everything behind and makes him a promise (Genesis 12:1-4). Abraham must have been very excited but then nothing happened. Anxiety started to creep in but then some time later, the Lord tries to reassure him again (Genesis 15:1-4) and after much reluctance, Abraham says OK Lord, if you say so but then the pressure is on from wifey and he gives in to her (Genesis 16:1-4)

Beloved, you know the story, out of frustration, Abraham considered his options; first Eliezer (Genesis 15:2) and then Ishmael. He must have said… “Lord, let’s just settle this with Ishmael. I’m tired of waiting. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m now 99 and we have been on this case since I was 75. Actually point of correction, that’s how old I was when you made this promise but I’ve had this situation way before that. He must have done the maths (LOL)… But God replied, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant (Genesis 17:19 NLT).

Beloved, he eventually had Isaac and the rest is history but the beauty of Abrahams story is that he grew… And because of Abraham’s faith, God counted him as righteous. And when God counted him as righteous, IT WASN’T JUST FOR ABRAHAM’S BENEFIT. IT WAS RECORDED FOR OUR BENEFIT, TOO, assuring us that God will also count us as righteous if we believe in Him, the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead (Romans 4:22-24 NLT).

Beloved, why am I sharing this? It’s because we all struggle with our doubts but we are to be encouraged by Abraham’s story. He started somewhere with his faith walk with God and he developed and when it was time for his next test to sacrifice Isaac, he didn’t think twice. He had matured in his walk with God so your doubts shouldn’t make you give up.

…Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that they SHOULD ALWAYS PRAY AND NOT GIVE UP. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow KEEPS BOTHERING me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(Luke 18:1-5 NIV)

Beloved, the Parable of the Persistent Widow is one we are quite familiar with and honestly, I’ve nothing new to tell you but I was reading this passage and it suddenly hit me again that as far as the Lord has given us a promise and as far as we can get on our knees to pray, we really have no business giving up. Jesus said it Himself.

Prayer and persistence is what it takes. Praying until something happens. Can you imagine a woman in labour suddenly deciding that she’s not going to push anymore just because the baby is not coming out yet? That she decides to stop pushing does not mean that the baby is not inside her womb. However, except the doctors help her out, it may mean death for either her or the baby or even both. And I believe that is what we sometimes do to our promises. We kill it inside us because we give up pushing.

We are told of the great prophet Elijah who took the birthing position and refused to give up when he was praying for rain… Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.” The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”… (1 Kings 18:42-44 NIV)

Imagine if after the sixth time, he gave up, we definitely won’t be reading of his testimony today.

Beloved, our job is to continue praying and it doesn’t even have to be a long prayer… Grant me justice against my adversary was all the widow kept saying… And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for His chosen ones, WHO CRY OUT TO HIM DAY AND NIGHT? WILL HE KEEP PUTTING THEM OFF?” (Luke 18:6-7 NIV)

Grant me what You promised Lord… Can you keep saying this until He does? Will God not bring about His promises for His chosen ones? I think He will. Why not get on your knees and lets push that baby out?

30. August 2016 · Comments Off on WHO IS BLESSING YOU? · Categories: Blessing, Choices, God's Plan, Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, Promise, Trusting God

The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it (Proverbs 10:22 NIV).

Beloved, have you ever heard the phrase “don’t settle for an Ishmael blessing?” Well, if you are like me and you’ve had so many Ishmael blessings, then you know to be more careful about settling for the things you desire.

What’s an Ishmael blessing? Well, we know the story of how Abraham and Sarah could not wait for the Lord’s timing to fulfil the promise that He made to them. Rather, they decided to take matters into their hands and went and produced Ishmael who was a product of the flesh (Galatians 4:29).

Most times, anything that adds sorrow and unnecessary toiling is an Ishmael blessing and dare I say that many things we settle for may have come from the devil because he is quicker to bless. However, God is slower to bless.

I was listening to someone teach on the various tests that God takes us through in order to mature us and one of them is a time test where though God has made you a promise, He doesn’t seem to be fulfilling what He promised you and when you look at your situation, there’s nothing that reveals to you that what He told you would ever be fulfilled. In such cases, God is the hold up not you. It’s about His timetable not yours and it’s beyond your control. Your prophecies are withheld by God and if you are impatient, with the help of the devil, you would try to make it happen by yourself and that’s when Ishmael is produced.

Another type of test is the usage test when God just leaves you on the shelf and isn’t using you. This happens mostly to people called to ministry. For example, John the Baptist who had to grow in the desert until the date of His manifestation (Luke 1:80).

With this kind of test, there’s no demand, opportunities or open doors for you and you are left wondering why no one is calling me. However, what God is teaching you here is that it’s not you but Him that has the ministry. However, if you’ve made it all about you, rather than spend the time receiving fresh bread from the Holy Spirit and building your gift for the task ahead, you will find a way out to open a door but it’s not going to be God’s will. God’s will for you is to use that period to make you dependent and strong in the Spirit and not on somebody else or yourself. However, if you go about asking for open doors, you are on your own.

Isn’t that nice to know?

So, who’s blessing you? Have you settled for an Ishmael blessing? If in doubt, look at your blessing again and perhaps you may just find your answer. Beloved, let’s settle for Isaac and not Ishmael who always comes before Isaac and though Isaac delays in his coming, though he takes time to manifest, he is what the wait. What you have to do is rest, trust and believe in God.

“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again. And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!” (Luke 5:5-6 NLT)

Beloved, there are those moments in life where after you’ve done all you think you know how to do, you get to that place where you feel “I can’t do this anymore because it’s just going to produce the same old results”. However, how are you sure about that?

Looking at our feature text, we find that Peter and his team were in a similar position. They had done all the work they were going to do and had nothing to show for it but then, Jesus comes along on the scene and instructs Simon to try again.

Oh yes, Peter had his justified argument which went along the lines of “I know the ins and outs of this business. I’ve being doing this for a long time. I’ve invested, laboured and given it my all, but unfortunately, as you can see, I haven’t seen any returns. However, Jesus said “I want you to try again”.

I was listening to someone say that at this point, Jesus checks the heart of Simon. Surely, Jesus knew Simon had been toiling all night and with no catch. He also knew that people were watching; people that knew that he hadn’t caught anything. The story tells us that… as Jesus was preaching… great crowds pressed in on Him to listen to the word of God. He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets (Luke 5:1-2 NLT)

Off course, some if not all of these great crowd knew that Simon hadn’t caught anything but now, Simon has a choice to make which is either to risk looking foolish in front of people and trying again or be deterred by what people may say. As an experienced fisherman, he knew what the chances were of catching anything. He probably heard shouting voices in his head saying “don’t do it again because people would laugh at you” but Simon was not going to allow his pride get in the way, causing him to miss out on what Jesus wanted to give him and the results were amazing.

Beloved, regardless of what had gone on in the past, when Jesus got on his boat, things changed. Unfortunately, many times, we end up doing things without His presence or instructions and end up catching nothing despite all our efforts but when Jesus is present and He is finally the one directing your boat, things are bound to change and the interesting thing is that His presence brought about the right type of assistance and partnership.

Beloved, are you at that place where you are afraid to try again? Could Jesus be saying “trust Me and just obey My leading and see what happens? Your abundant catch could be one try away.

26. July 2016 · Comments Off on ‏TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE FACTS OF YOUR SITUATION‏ · Categories: God's Plan, Hope, Jesus Christ, Patience, Perseverance, Praise, Promise, Trusting God

His faith did not fail, ALTHOUGH HE WAS WELL AWARE THAT his impotent body, after nearly 100 years, was as good as dead and that Sarah’s womb, too, was dead. In spite of all this, his faith in God’s promise did not falter. In fact, his faith grew as he gave glory to God because he was supremely confident that God could deliver on His promise (Romans 4:19-21 VOICE).

Beloved, whenever you are presented with an impossible situation, this is always one portion of scripture to keep in front of you because if Abraham was fully aware of the impossible situation that himself and his wife faced, and he still found it in him to believe what God promised which is that he would be the father of many nation, then it proves that truly nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37)

And I love that God honoured his faith because God rewards great faith (Hebrews 11:6). Abraham was fully aware of the facts presented before Him but he made a conscious decision to take his focus of the facts and place it on the God who made the promises because he probably knew very well that ‎once you focus on the facts and meditate on it, you are no longer giving your faith a chance to work‎.

Beloved… faith proceeds from hearing, as we listen to the message about God’s Anointed (Romans 10:17 VOICE)… not ‎by hearing the word of your situation.

The other point to note here is that like someone said, faith comes by hearing and not just reading and this is why you have to keep meditating on the promises of God for your situation until it speaks to you. That’s when you get impregnated by the word and in no time, you are sure to give birth to your promise.

The opposite of this position is to lose hope because once you lose hope, you have nothing to stand on because as we know‎… Faith is the assurance of THINGS YOU HAVE HOPED FOR, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen (Hebrews 11:1 VOICE).

Thinking of the Shunammite woman, she told Elisha… “O man of God, don’t deceive me and get my hopes up like that.” (2 Kings 4:16 NLT). What she was telling Elisha was don’t get my hopes up only for me to be disappointed. She was so afraid of getting her hopes up and then being disappointed but she needed to hope again.

Beloved, what are your eyes fixed on? Have you looked at your situation and lost hope based on what you see? Remember… hope does not involve what we already have or see. For who goes around hoping for what he already has? But if we wait expectantly for things we have never seen, then we hope with true perseverance and eager anticipation (Romans 8:24-25 VOICE).

TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE FACTS OF YOUR SITUATION and just continue to wait on the Lord, praising your way through.

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve for Saul… (1 Samuel 16:1 AMP)

Beloved, How long???

As someone that did counselling, we were taught that we shouldn’t underestimate attending to losses be it a career, relationship, business or person and a trained counsellor can help talk you through what you are feeling so you can close that door properly. ‎Actually, one of the things we do on the course is talk you through all the losses you’ve gone through from childhood just to ensure there are no open doors because whether you realise it or not, you could be stuck somewhere and not know it.

It is recognised that it’s important to grieve for a considerable ‎time but then, you have to let it go and move forward. Even God recognises that you need time to grieve but then, He also has to put a check on grieve hence His question to Saul. He also told Joshua… “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over… to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel (Joshua 1:2 NKJV).

Beloved, recently someone was telling me of how their friend has not been able to get over the loss of their loved one and as a result, they are acting in ways that are totally out of character. There’s lack of peace, serious depression and the real struggle to see others moving on to the point that it just sounds dangerously selfish and so we started to expound the text that says… “the human heart is the most DECEITFUL of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? (Jeremiah 17:9 NLT)

I recently learnt that one of the words used for ‘DECEITFUL’ is ‘POLLUTED’ and ‘WICKED’ means to be ‘WEAK’, ‘SICK’ or ‘WOUNDED’. In other words, the heart can be polluted and wounded ‎from painful experiences and hence operate from a place of dysfunction and that’s why you find that we end up shocked by some of the things we do. “I can’t believe I just did that? Did I really do that?” Well, it just means your wounds are acting on your behalf and it might cause you to think and act in ways you never imagined. That’s why we must always ask for a heart probing examination… Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart; Test me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me… (Psalm 139:23-24 AMP)

‎Beloved, it is the strategy of the enemy to make you focus on what died in your life so you get stuck where you are and can’t look forward‎ but the Lord says… “You’ve stayed long enough at this mountain! Break camp, and head up… (Deuteronomy 1:6-7 VOICE)… Watch closely: I am preparing something new; it’s happening now, even as I speak, and you’re about to see it. I am preparing a way through the desert; Waters will flow where there had been none (Isaiah 43:19 VOICE).
