They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel, But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tested God in the desert. And HE GAVE THEM THEIR REQUEST, BUT SENT LEANNESS INTO THEIR SOUL (Psalm 106:13-15 NKJV).

Beloved, I read this and couldn’t help but stop and reflect on this last part… HE GAVE THEM THEIR REQUEST, BUT SENT LEANNESS INTO THEIR SOUL…

The Message translation says… They only cared about pleasing themselves in that desert, provoked God with their insistent demands. He gave them exactly what they asked for—but along with it they got an empty heart… and like someone said… THEIR BODIES WERE FILLED, THEIR SOULS WERE EMPTY.

Beloved, it is possible to get that Job, that business deal, that house, car, man or woman of your dreams and still find that you are still empty or it may come with a lot of trouble. I remember a lady sharing of how she was begging God for something that was obviously not God’s will for her. This lady happens to be a prayer warrior. People have testified to the fact that she is one that prays so, you can imagine how she would have disturbed the Lord with her request. However, she said the Lord told her plainly… “well, I can give you the grace to bear the consequences of what you are asking for”.

Hmmm, though it was hard to let go, she had to come to the conclusion that she didn’t want to settle for just the grace to bear the trouble that goes with it. The Bible says… The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22 NKJV). This one would have been full of sorrow… no peace… no joy… She would have probably become like Paul who said… Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time He said, “My grace is all you need… (2 Corinthians 12:8-9 NLT).

Beloved, the Israelites did not wait for the Lord’s counsel. They settled for momentary satisfaction. They settled for what would satisfy their lust but along with it came the LEANNESS OF THEIR SOUL. We have got to get to that place where we can trust the Lord enough to say… Father let, Your perfect and not permissive will be done.

Jesus said… “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him (Matthew 7:9-11 NLT).

Beloved, the Lord knows that some of the things we ask for are stones and snakes in disguise. Let’s not force our will upon God. He knows what’s best for us and at just the right time, when He knows we are ready for it… we would eat the fruit of the Land (Joshua 5:12).

Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!” But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God (Acts 8:17‭-‬21 NLT).

Beloved, I was reading this recently and the first thought that came to mind was “your money can’t buy this”. Unfortunately, you find that there are certain people that feel that their money is their power or that their money would get them power. These are people that feel that their money is the only means to get power and control people and things around them and once you’ve done it for a long time, you think you can get away with it… “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed.

Such was the case of Simon in our feature text and let me just break this down for you on a level that you may be able to understand or relate with. Your tithe, special offering or gifts shouldn’t be used to get you the power and influence you so desperately want. You cannot use it to gain the power you so crave for.

Beloved, how did Peter respond to Simon? He basically told him where to go. He said… you can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God… Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive your evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.” (Acts 8:22‭-‬23 NLT)

How I wish there would be more ‘Peters’ to say to people that your money can’t buy this. We would be able to shut this attitude down in the body of Christ.

Beloved, one of my favourite Scriptures is… Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalms 139:23‭-‬24 NLT). I have found that once you start praying this prayer, you would be surprised at the things the Lord would dig up but that’s okay because it doesn’t stop there. Like David, you can also ask the Lord to… Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me (Psalms 51:10 KJV).

Remember, YOUR MONEY CAN’T BUY THIS OR THAT! God’s gift cannot be bought! Submit yourself to the process… Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time (1 Peter 5:6 NKJV)

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you (Matthew 6:33 NKJV).

Beloved, we know the story of King David; how he loved to be in the presence of the Lord! Growing up, he spent a lot of time in the presence of the Lord; writing songs, praising and just worshiping God. I’m sure that’s where he learnt all his special dance moves that embarrassed the life out of his wife. But then, there was Saul. Right from the very day he felt David was a threat, he did not allow the poor boy rest. David was always running for his life until Saul and his sons died and then David was eventually anointed king over all of Israel.

David had to fight some more enemies but immediately he had some peace, there was only one thing on his mind; the presence of God. Then David again gathered all the elite troops in Israel, 30,000 in all. He led them to Baalah of Judah to bring back the ARK OF GOD, which bears the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, who is enthroned between the cherubim (2 Samuel 6:1-2 NLT).

And not just that. David’s next mission was to build a ‘house’ for the Lord to live in… When King David was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all the surrounding enemies, the king summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of God is out there in a tent!” (2 Samuel 7:1-2 NLT)

The Lord had to stop him. “David, are you the one to build a house for me to live in?

Beloved, David was the King of all of Israel, but his heart’s desire was seeking after the things of God first. Shouldn’t this be the case for us too? That is, like our feature text says to… seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33).

What things? Oh… The Ark of the Lord came with blessings. We know David ran into some problems when transporting the Ark so out of fear he left it with Obed-edom… but then King David was told, “The Lord has blessed Obed-edom’s household and everything he has because of the Ark of God”. So David went there and brought the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with a great celebration (2 Samuel 7:1-2 NLT). GIVE ME BACK WHAT BELONGS TO ME!

Beloved, we tend to get our priorities mixed up and run after the very things that should be running after us. The Bible says… And all these blessings shall come upon you and OVERTAKE you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God (Deuteronomy 28:2 AMP).

Beloved, today, Jesus is saying “seek Me first and see what will follow”. Are you going to heed to His voice?

BUT there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest. Then Peter said, “Ananias, WHY HAVE YOU LET SATAN FILL YOUR HEART? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!” (Acts 5:1-4 NLT).

Beloved, because there’s a ‘BUT’ at the beginning of our feature text which apparently is how the Chapter starts, it’s only wise to rewind a bit to the previous chapter and you’ll find it recorded that… there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”)… He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles (Acts 4:36-37 NLT).

This got me thinking; perhaps Ananias and his wife saw what Joseph did and how the people reacted to what he did (to earn the name ‘Son of Encouragement’) and most importantly, how the Lord must have blessed Joseph and so they decided that they wanted the same praises and blessings but like Peter said, they allowed Satan fill their hearts. Their motives were wrong. As a result, what was supposed to be a blessing became a curse… As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died… (Acts 5:5 NLT)… and same thing happened to his wife (Acts 5:10).

Unfortunately, many fall into this trap. We do things because others are doing it but I long decided that I’m not going to do anything just because I see someone else doing it regardless of the guilt trip game because while people may look at what is given, the Lord looks at the heart of the giver.

We see this with the case of Cain and Abel… When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the Lord. Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The Lord accepted ABEL AND HIS GIFT, but he did not accept CAIN AND HIS GIFT. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. “Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” (Genesis 4:3-7 NLT)

Beloved, you will be accepted if you do what is right… that’s what the Lord is looking for in your giving and sacrifice… DOING IT FROM A PURE HEART‏ WITH PURE MOTIVES…

02. May 2017 · Comments Off on DEALING WITH MATTERS OF THE HEART · Categories: Change, Choices, Jesus Christ, Mind, Motives, Thoughts

Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:23-24 AMPC).

Beloved, King David was by no means a perfect man but one thing I’ve learnt about David is that he got the revelation that God, to whom it matters most, is always looking deep into the heart of man. With God, IT IS A MATTER OF THE HEART… Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord WEIGHS AND TRIES THE HEARTS (Proverbs 21:2 AMP). I believe that’s why you would always hear David say things like… Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart (Psalm 26:2 NLT).

As Christians, this is so important. God already knows we are not perfect that’s why we have the help of the Holy Spirit. God looked down from His throne at all the people on the earth and said, “that’s the man I’m looking for” …HE RAISED UP DAVID to be their king; of him He bore witness and said, I have found David son of Jesse A MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART, WHO WILL DO ALL MY WILL AND CARRY OUT MY PROGRAM FULLY (Acts 13:22 AMP).

Beloved, do you think that when God looked down at David and said “this is a man after My own heart”, God did not know David was going to commit adultery, kill the husband and take his wife? But David always presented his heart before God. God said David… WILL DO ALL MY WILL AND CARRY OUT MY PROGRAM FULLY… How did David achieve this? …He knew all sorts of things can get in the way…self-ambition; wrong motives etc. so all day long he cried out… SHOW ME HOW YOU WORK, God; SCHOOL ME IN YOUR WAYS. Take me by the hand; Lead me down the path of truth. YOU ARE MY SAVIOR, AREN’T YOU? (Psalm 25:4-5 MSG)

God ‘RAISED UP DAVID’ meaning ‘TO TRAIN’ and David was willing to learn. He must have said “You called me into this thing; I did not call myself so SHOW ME HOW… This is a desperate cry for help from someone that knows that if you leave me to it, I’ll mess it all up. Even with good intentions, you can still miss it because… There is A WAY WHICH SEEMS RIGHT TO A MAN AND APPEARS STRAIGHT BEFORE HIM, but at the end of it is the way of death (Proverbs 14:12 AMPC). This means that as far as you are concerned, you may think you are doing the right thing but the end is disaster.

Beloved, this is a call to deal with matters of our heart. Personally, I’m by no means perfect but one thing I do is always present my heart before God; all my wrong motives, malicious thoughts etc and say… Lord help me. It’s time to be transparent before God and give the Holy Spirit permission to take over.

And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I WOULD MOREOVER HAVE GIVEN UNTO THEE SUCH AND SUCH THINGS. Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? (2 Samuel 12:8-9 KJV)

Beloved, on Sunday, I listened to a message where the preacher focused on this line and since then, I couldn’t shake it off. Our feature text is about David who had an adulterous affair with Uriah’s wife and then killed him to cover up his mess. However, the Lord was so disappointed in him; “I gave you everything a man could ever ask for and if that was not enough, all you should have done was say so and I would have given unto thee such and such things…”

So, what is ‘such and such things?’ The New Living Translation says… I would have given you much, much more. The Message Translation says… And if that hadn’t been enough, I’d have gladly thrown in much more.

Beloved, this tells me that the Lord doesn’t have a problem blessing you likesome of us religious people think. All He asks is that He has our hearts. The Bible says… For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this; therefore, from now on you will have wars.” (2 Chronicles 16:9 AMP)

So, the Lord did His search and He found David and… of him He testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart [conforming to My will and purposes], who will do all My will.’ (Acts 13:22 AMP)

However, we now hear the Lord say… Why have you treated the word of God with brazen contempt, doing this great evil? You murdered Uriah the Hittite, then took his wife as your wife. Worse, you killed him with an Ammonite sword! And now, because you treated God with such contempt and took Uriah the Hittite’s wife as your wife, killing and murder will continually plague your family (2 Samuel 12:8-9 MSG).

Beloved, this must have been very disappointing for the Lord and it sure spoke volumes to me to the point where I had to say… Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalm 139:23-24 NLT).

Beloved, the blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22 NLT). So, let’s submit our hearts to Him, cut out the evil, the wickedness, the greed, the covetousness, the competitiveness, the wrong motives, the disobedience, the idolatry etc. and go after Him wholeheartedly so we can find out what His such and such things are

08. April 2017 · Comments Off on ARE YOU ASKING AMISS?‏ · Categories: God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Motives, Prayer

You do not have, because you do not ask. [Or] you do ask [God for them] and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [when you get what you desire] to spend it in sensual pleasures (James 4:3 AMPC).

Beloved, I remember having this debate about what it means to ASK AMISS? With particular reference to asking God to bless you so that your enemies can see, the question was raised; is this asking amiss? What do you think?

Well, I think it is. Using Hannah as case study, she had a rival, Peninnah who used to constantly laugh at her situation. Peninnah was a real Pain-In-Hannah’s-Neck because… year after year; whenever Hannah went up to the Lord’s house, PENINNAH PROVOKED HER, so she wept and did not eat (1 Samuel 1:7 AMPC)

Okay, so Hannah became so provoked that she was forced to seriously seek the face of God Who then opened her womb, but what was her real motive for praying? Did she say God please open my womb so that I can show Peninah? No! Rather… she made this vow: “O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime, and as a sign that he has been dedicated to the Lord, his hair will never be cut.” (1 Samuel 1:11 NLT)

Beloved, if Peninnah was her focus, her prayer would have been “Lord give me a son so I can push around in a scroller to prove to this Pain-In-The-Neck that I’m also fertile. No! She didn’t ask amiss. The whole point of Hannah’s situation was about fulfilling God’s purpose. Right from the beginning of her story we hear that she was barren but immediately following that, we hear the narrator say… the priests of the Lord at that time were the two sons of Eli—Hophni and Phinehas (1 Samuel 1:3 NLT).

The reason Hophni and Phinehas were mentioned early in this story is because God was about to raise someone to replace them because they behaved inappropriately as priests. It was all about God’s purpose and Hannah was able to key into that purpose by vowing to dedicate her son to God and in return… the Lord gave Hannah three sons and two daughters (1 Samuel 2:21 NLT).

Beloved, are your enemies your focus? David said… You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies… (Psalm 23:5 NKJV). He did not say, “Lord, please prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies…”

Beloved, Motives is so important to God. Perhaps, you may want to check your prayer point and motives. ARE YOU ASKING AMISS?

15. December 2016 · Comments Off on LET LOVE ALWAYS BE YOUR MOTIVE · Categories: God's Plan, Jesus Christ, Love, Motives

For God SO LOVED THE WORLD that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16 NKJV).

Beloved, love was God’s motive for sending Jesus Christ. In the same way, Jesus expects everything we do to be done out of love. He said… ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-39 NKJV). Jesus also said… A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35 NKJV)

But then, He writes to the church in Ephesus… “I see what you’ve done, your hard, hard work, your refusal to quit. I know you can’t stomach evil, that you weed out apostolic pretenders. I know your persistence, your courage in my cause, that you never wear out. 4-5 “But you walked away from your first love—why? What’s going on with you, anyway? Do you have any idea how far you’ve fallen? A Lucifer fall! “Turn back! Recover your dear early love. No time to waste, for I’m well on my way to removing your light from the golden circle (Revelation 2:2-5 MSG).

Here, Jesus is saying I see everything you are doing but what is your motive? Remember, He sees the heart of man and as Christians, do you know that you could be doing all the right things but for the wrong reason? Do you know that rather than draw people to Christ, by their actions some have driven people further away from Christ?

Personally, I reflect a lot. I have to go over and over my actions to check that it’s not coming from a place of bitterness, unforgiveness, manipulation, revenge, pride etc. I’m not there yet but I’m not where I used to be because in the past, there were so many times I’ve said things to people… I’ve told them the truth… given them a piece of my mind and felt really good about it; “You ought to know that I’m right and you’re wrong” but then, immediately after, I hear the Lord saying… “you know you’ve just made that person feel this little or feel so bad” and I find myself saying, ‘please forgive me Lord’.

Beloved, LET ALWAYS LOVE BE YOUR MOTIVE for whatever you do. Love is the greatest virtue… not being right or following rules… Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:12-14 NIV).
