…Truth, RIGHTEOUSNESS, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. LEARN HOW TO APPLY THEM. You’ll need them throughout your life… (Ephesians 6:13-18 MSG).

Beloved, our feature text says we should learn to put on a breastplate of RIGHTEOUSNESS (NKJV) and when you think of it, the breastplate protects the Roman soldier’s vital organs, especially the heart. In the same way, you are to put on RIGHTEOUSNESS to fortify your heart against satan’s attacks. We know that our own righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6) so it is the righteousness of Christ imputed to us that we are to put on. However, do you know you can put on a breastplate but still be exposed?

The Bible records how King Ahab was killed. Someone… shot an arrow at random and it struck the king of Israel BETWEEN THE PLATES of his armor… (1 Kings 22:34 NET)

They got him BETWEEN THE PLATES of his armor… In the same way, any Christian who thinks they have put on the breastplate of righteousness but still lives an ungodly life is not fully guarded and can be struck BETWEEN THE PLATES of their armor.

Sin provides an opening which becomes the point of the enemy’s attack. It gives the devil a foothold. Cain can tell you how this works. He would tell you what the Bible says about anger is true. The Lord said to Cain, “WHY ARE YOU ANGRY? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:6-7 NIV). Cain did not listen to God’s warning so anger turned into envy, then murder which led to him being banished from the presence of God and then he suddenly realises that he is now exposed to the attack of the enemy. He said… whoever finds me will kill me.” (Genesis 4:14 NIV).

Beloved, we are covered under the Lord’s presence but if a child says to her daddy, “people keep attacking me every time I go to that place you told me not to go, what do you think the daddy would say? He would say, haven’t I told you to stop going there? Stay under the covering of this house and you would be properly protected.

Beloved, living a godly life is necessary to defend you from the arrows of the enemy and it involves SELF-CONTROL because… a person without SELF-CONTROL is like a city with broken-down walls (Proverbs 25:28 NIV). SELF-CONTROL is a battle because your flesh and spirit are constantly fighting each other (Galatians 5:17). Your flesh says ‘DO’ but your spirit says ‘DON’T’ and the more ‘DON’T’s you listen to would help build up your spirit man so it overpowers your flesh.

Beloved, people spend hours in the gym building up physical muscles and they then want to expose their body so people can see how good they look but you can’t afford to be exposed to the enemy. Learn how to put on your breastplate of RIGHTEOUSNESS at all times.

Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, BUT HE LAUGHED TO HIMSELF IN DISBELIEF. “How could I become a father at the age of 100?” he thought. “And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?” So Abraham said to God, “MAY ISHMAEL LIVE UNDER YOUR SPECIAL BLESSING!” (Genesis 17:17-18 NLT)

Beloved, it’s always reassuring to read about great men of God whom at some point in their walk with God shared some of our struggles. It’s also reassuring to know that God is willing to work with us till we get to the point where He wants us to be. Would it surprise you that Abraham, the father of all who believe (Romans 4:16) once doubted if God’s promise was ever going to happen?

After waiting for years, God appeared to him when he was now 99 years (Gen 17:1) to reassure him of his promise but probably sick of waiting, Abraham said… MAY ISHMAEL LIVE UNDER YOUR SPECIAL BLESSING…

How did he get to this point? Well, right from the first time Abraham was mentioned in the Bible, his problem was highlighted (Genesis 11:29-30). The Lord then tells him to leave everything behind and makes him a promise (Genesis 12:1-4). Abraham must have been very excited but then nothing happened. Anxiety started to creep in but then some time later, the Lord tries to reassure him again (Genesis 15:1-4) and after much reluctance, Abraham says OK Lord, if you say so but then the pressure is on from wifey and he gives in to her (Genesis 16:1-4)

Beloved, you know the story, out of frustration, Abraham considered his options; first Eliezer (Genesis 15:2) and then Ishmael. He must have said… “Lord, let’s just settle this with Ishmael. I’m tired of waiting. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m now 99 and we have been on this case since I was 75. Actually point of correction, that’s how old I was when you made this promise but I’ve had this situation way before that. He must have done the maths (LOL)… But God replied, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant (Genesis 17:19 NLT).

Beloved, he eventually had Isaac and the rest is history but the beauty of Abrahams story is that he grew… And because of Abraham’s faith, God counted him as righteous. And when God counted him as righteous, IT WASN’T JUST FOR ABRAHAM’S BENEFIT. IT WAS RECORDED FOR OUR BENEFIT, TOO, assuring us that God will also count us as righteous if we believe in Him, the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead (Romans 4:22-24 NLT).

Beloved, why am I sharing this? It’s because we all struggle with our doubts but we are to be encouraged by Abraham’s story. He started somewhere with his faith walk with God and he developed and when it was time for his next test to sacrifice Isaac, he didn’t think twice. He had matured in his walk with God so your doubts shouldn’t make you give up.

The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows] (John 10:10 AMP).

Beloved, are you living an abundant life now or are you waiting for some future state? Do you know that as I was reading the conversation that took place between Jesus and Martha when Lazarus died, I suddenly realised that Martha does what many Christians still do today which is hope for the future while ignoring the present day?

Here’s the conversation that took place…

Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to Him, “I KNOW THAT HE WILL RISE AGAIN IN THE RESURRECTION AT THE LAST DAY.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:21-26 NKJV)

I KNOW THAT HE WILL RISE AGAIN IN THE RESURRECTION AT THE LAST DAY… “But Martha, I’m not just talking of that last day, I’m talking of him having life now”. Beloved, we know the story. We find that Jesus was referring to ‘NOW’ while Martha was referring to the resurrection day which happens later and like I said, I suddenly realised that many of us still have the same mind-set that Martha‎ had.

That’s why we are in the habit of postponing life and fulfilment to a later date. Always looking on to the future and as a result you don’t enjoy the journey.

Jesus said… I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]… The Message translation says… I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. The question you need to ask yourself today is “am I living that abundant life?” According to my Bible notes, “the resurrection of Jesus shows the world He is the resurrection and the life. That isn’t life after death; it is the reality that through Jesus believers can have abundant life, a full and meaningful life, here and now through faith.”

Beloved, the Psalmist said… This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24 NLT). Beloved… This is the day… Not tomorrow… Not next week… This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. This means you have a choice to make. You can choose whether you want to rejoice or not and this shouldn’t depend on your current circumstance. You can live a life of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

Beloved, don’t allow the thief to steal, kill and destroy the abundant life that Jesus came to give to you.
