Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ… I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose (1 Corinthians 1:7, 10 NLT).

Beloved, when I first started to meditate on 1 Corinthians 1, the first thought that came to mind was “The Struggles of a gifted house” and ‘house’ here isn’t just limited to a church or ministry but even one’s household or every environment that is heavily stocked with gifted people. Unfortunately, in such environments, you often find competition where one wants to outdo the other and the focus is then on the gift. Such was the case with the Corinthian Church which was a very gifted house but unfortunately, this is what causes division in the Church.

Apostle Paul who was addressing this condition in the church went on to say… some members of Chloe’s household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters. Some of you are saying, “I am a follower of Paul.” Others are saying, “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Peter,” or “I follow only Christ.” Has Christ been divided into factions?… (1 Corinthians 1:11-13 NLT)

What happened was that Apostle Paul taught the gospel in Corinth for a while but then, he left Apollos to preach and teach in his absence. However, when he was away, he began to receive disturbing reports of the discord taking place in the church in Corinth.

Apparently, Apollos was a very eloquent speaker; a gift he used to preach the gospel (Acts 18:24) and so, you can imagine that people began to take sides. However, Apostle Paul felt this was worldly and a sure sign of immaturity. He said… when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ… for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other… Aren’t you living like people of the world? When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,”… After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants… I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it… It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. WHAT’S IMPORTANT IS THAT GOD MAKES THE SEED GROW. THE ONE WHO PLANTS AND THE ONE WHO WATERS WORK TOGETHER WITH THE SAME PURPOSE… (1 Corinthians 3:1-8 NLT).

Beloved, Apostle Paul said comparing ourselves with each other is not wise (2 Corinthians 10:12). It is immature and it causes division in the body of Christ and it’s a condition of the heart we must address. After all, are we not ONE BODY but with many parts put together to fulfil the Lord’s purpose (1 Corinthians 12:12-26)?

SELAH!

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, JUST AS YOUR SOUL PROSPERS (3 John 2 NKJV).

On Saturday, we had our monthly meeting by the well where we experienced a great move of God as He began a deep healing of the soul which I’m going to be sharing as He leads. Our feature text was one that He opened our eyes to and the first thing we saw was that this is a prayer of a condition John desired for his friend. The KJV says… I wish above all things…

Beloved, when you wish for something, it means it’s something you desire and for John, this was that 1) Gaius prospers and 2) be in good health. However, there’s a condition which depends on how well his soul prospers. This suggests that we need to pay attention to the condition of our souls because it determines how well we prosper in other areas of our lives.

Over the past few years, the world has experienced the death of some very well-known celebrities’ who were very wealthy but suffered from ailments like insomnia and eventually died from drug abuse; both hard and prescription drugs and I remember coming across a diagram that said hurt in your BODY is experienced in sickness, weakness, decease, pain. Hurt in your SOUL is experienced in mental anguish, emotional instability, paralysis of will. Hurt in your SPIRIT is experienced in emptiness, hopelessness, futility, loneliness etc.

Beloved, I believe this sums up John’s prayer. The Amplified Bible says… I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually].

Your soul is made up of your will, desires, emotions etc. and a healthy soul is free from offence, anger, bitterness, jealousy, insecurity, low self-esteem, brokenness, anxiety, fear etc. One doesn’t have trust issues. One isn’t abusive or controlling. One isn’t competitive because they don’t feel the need to prove themselves. As a result, your relationships with your spouse, children, friends, colleagues, parents, boss/leaders prospers which also affects other areas of your life. And then, when your will is also fully surrendered to God, you experience true prosperity (Proverbs 10:22).

Beloved, Hannah was one that had to empty her soul. She told Eli… I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I… have poured out my soul before the Lord… Then Eli answered and said, “Go in PEACE, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.”… So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was NO LONGER SAD (1 Samuel 1:15-18 NKJV).

Hannah conceived after getting rid of everything negative in her soul and aligning her will with God’s will as it concerns Samuel and then Eli said… GO IN PEACE… which is SHALOM in Hebrew and according to Strong’s Concordance, SHALOM refers to completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquillity, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or discord”.

Beloved, the Lord desires that your soul prospers because everything else falls in line so, in this season, be attentive as He reveals things that explains the condition of your soul.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. WHEN HE RETURNED HOME, he heard music and dancing in the house, and he asked one of the servants what was going on. ‘Your brother is back,’ he was told… We are celebrating because of his safe return.’ “The older brother was angry and WOULDN’T GO IN… (Luke 15:25-28 NKJV).

Beloved, the prodigal son came back to His Father. What about the older son? He is a cause of concern because we are not told whether he came into the house… whether he came to his Father. Did he come to his senses? Did he have a change of heart?

The older son represents the Pharisees and teachers of religious law. What are the some of the things that hindered his walk with the Father?

Firstly, he was Judgmental (Luke 15:2). Why is associating with such sinful people—even eating with them? He was angry and bitter (Luke 15:28). Why are you celebrating because of his safe return? He also lacked love and compassion for his lost brother (Luke 15: 2, 27-28) but Jesus writes this message to the Church in Ephesus… “I know all the things you do. I have seen your hard work and your patient endurance. I know you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims of those who say they are apostles but are not. You have discovered they are liars. You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love Me or EACH OTHER AS YOU DID AT FIRST! Look how far you have fallen… (Revelation 2:2-5 NLT).

He was Jealous and though he was loyal and diligent, he was also frustrated. Why you? What about me? All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to… Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate… (Luke 15:30 NLT)

Beloved, have you ever asked this question; “how did you know he was hanging out with prostitutes? Were you there? Perhaps, he spent every day imagining and wishing he could do what his brother was doing. Have you ever had friends that would invite you places you know you shouldn’t go to? You say “no” but then are left wondering how much fun they are having‎.

Last month, I reviewed a book where the Author said “there is nothing worse than a lukewarm Christian; People with one leg in church and another in the world. Such people are miserable and cannot enjoy sin because they know it is wrong, yet they cannot approach God because of the sin”. How true is that?

Beloved, these were some of the things that hindered the walk of the older brother from entering in… and here we are looking at the heart of a son that hinders his relationship with his father. Does any of these symptoms describe you?

There’s one more…

They said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us, too?” But the Lord heard them (Numbers 12:2 NLT).

Beloved, the above conversation was what took place between Miriam and Aaron, Moses siblings. As I read this, what I found interesting was how people responded to Moses’ gift compared to how Moses responded to it. They were jealous while Moses who knows and feels the burden was like… they can have it all.

Remember when… a young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!” Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ assistant since his youth, protested, “Moses, my master, make them stop!” But Moses replied, “ARE YOU JEALOUS FOR MY SAKE? I WISH THAT ALL THE LORD’S PEOPLE WERE PROPHETS and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them all!” (Numbers 11:27-29 NLT)

This is the same Moses that just cried out to the Lord… Why are You so hard on me? I am your devoted servant. Why don’t You look on me with affection? Why do I have the great burden of these spiteful people? Did I conceive them, bear them, and give birth to them? Why should You tell me to carry them—as a nanny does some suckling infant—into the land that You swore to their ancestors?… I simply cannot keep carrying them along. They are way too heavy. If You plan to treat me like this, then just kill me now. If You care about me at all, just put me out of my misery so I do not have to live out this distress. (Numbers 11:11-15 VOICE)

Beloved, if only this people could look beyond Moses’ Facebook or Instagram pictures, they would see the burden that Moses was carrying. We should never be jealous about people’s gift. If anything, we should try and emulate what Moses did… For his part, Moses was a UNIQUELY HUMBLE FELLOW, MORE HUMBLE THAN ANYONE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD (Numbers 12:3 VOICE)

And then, he had a very intimate relationship with God. God told Miriam and Aaron… Listen to Me. When there are prophets in your midst, I, the Eternal One, will show Myself to them in visions, and will sound My voice in their dreams. It’s different with My servant, Moses. I have entrusted him above anyone else in My whole house, and with him I communicate face-to-face. We speak directly and without riddles. He can even see the very form of the Eternal… (Numbers 12:7-8 VOICE)

According to my Bible notes, “Moses is described as uniquely close to the Lord… His importance is underscored by God’s unique communication with Moses. It is direct, plain, and without trances, visions, or dreams. Literally, the communication is right in God’s face. The idea here is that it is not veiled but intimate; there is a closeness between God and Moses no other person shares”.

Beloved, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. Rather than covet the gift, wish for humility, intimacy with God and contentment because… godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6 NKJV).

14. December 2015 · Comments Off on TIME FOR HEART SURGERY (PT5) · Categories: Anger, Change, Envy, Jealousy, Jesus Christ, Relationship, Repentance, Sin

Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart; Test me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way (Psalm 139:23-24 AMP).

The fifth heart ailment diagnosed was JEALOUSY… SECRET ENVY… where we say “It should have been me… I should be the one recognised for that”.

The prodigal son’s elder brother comes to mind. Out of anger and frustration, he said to his father… “All these years I’ve slaved for you… and in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!” (Luke 15:29-30 NLT).

YET WHEN THIS SON OF YOURS COMES BACK… LOL. Isn’t he your brother?

He said… All these years I’ve slaved for you… Who would have thought this was how the older brother was feeling? Every time we look at this story, we tend to focus on the younger brother who left home but when we take our eyes off him for a moment and focus on his older brother, we see a bit of undetected jealousy or envy going on here and I’m immediately thinking of when Apostle Paul said… beloved, LET US CLEANSE OURSELVES FROM ALL FILTHINESS OF THE FLESH AND SPIRIT… (2 Corinthians 7:1 NKJV).

Hmmm… FILTHINESS OF THE FLESH AND SPIRIT…

These are two areas we need to focus on but most times, we focus on the FILTHINESS OF THE FLESH… i.e. obvious sins like adultery, fornication, stealing… because they are easy to detect. However, what about the FILTHINESS OF THE SPRIT like jealousy and envy? One can carry this kind of filth undetected for a long time. The same person that’s been with you for years is secretly saying “look at how you are treating others better than myself” or “just look at how the Lord is blessing you” and until it reaches that point when it all explodes, how can you detect it?

However, the Lord who examines the heart sees it all. That’s how he saw Cain’s heart… “Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it…” One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him (Genesis 4:6-8 NLT).

“But Cain, what did Abel do to you?” “Nothing, I was just jealous of him. But if only I had listened to the Lord about dealing with that crouching sin”.

Beloved, are you dealing Jealousy or a secret envy? Is it time to ask the Lord to search and deal with what’s really in your heart?

God bless you
